Peers have a significant impact on how emerging adults behave when it comes to substance

use, but research on peer pressure has traditionally only covered adolescence. Any kind of

influence positive or negative that originates in a peer group is referred to as peer pressure.

This peer group may share the same age (for example, children in the same school), but it

may also be characterized by shared traits like parenthood, affiliations with certain

professions, and your area. Peer pressure is something that affects everyone at some point

in their lives, but you can learn to deal with it by boosting your self-esteem and surrounding

yourself with supportive people.

Many factors can affect the learnings of a student as they be involved in the academic

environment, of course on their way to achieve their hopes and dreams the path that they

will continue to walk on becomes more and more difficult. Stress and anxiety are one of the

main factors that can affect the learnings of a student these days but there is one that is

affecting the social and communication skills of many teen agers and that is peer pressure.

A social pressure called peer pressure is impacting a lot of students and teen agers these

days. Peer pressure can be defined as the urge to do a certain action or adapt a certain

characteristic just to be belonged in a certain group of friends. Fear of abandonment, one of

the reasons why many teen agers tend to do unmoral things just so they don’t get

abandoned by their friends or they have a fear that they might get abandoned. Peer

pressure doesn’t always scream negative it can also lead to a possible outcome like a group

of friends that are academic achievers it can work as an inspirational and motivation for

others to do more and be at their best.

The peer pressure is taking a turn in our school its outcomes are negative, as we observed

some students that are always participating at school, had a good class record, and no bad

habit when they met their current group of friends everything changes.

Peer pressure must have changed negatively given the state of education in the Philippines

now, though. Peer pressure makes it difficult for kids to embrace "their" views, culture, and

hobbies, according to news stories, articles, and even the personal statements of the

engaged students and family. Dr. B. J. Casey from Cornell University's Weill Medical College

claims that adolescents make judgements and decisions relatively quickly and accurately

when given the freedom to do so. However, when individuals must make choices quickly or

in social settings, their choices are frequently impacted by outside variables like peers.

Do i act differently when im with my friends than when im at home?

“No, I don’t act differently since my family are also my friends. I act the same when

I’m with my friends and at home, if I’m loud, crazy, talkative with my friends then parang

ganyan rin ako sa pamilya ko”- Morainn Jolea Macasarte Pascual

“Not really, I do feel energetic and quite loud when im around them and sometimes

quite and just there listening to my friend/family member blabbing on what happened to them

about their day.” – Cel Line Nuneza

Is it hard to say "NO" to friends?

“In my group of friends, it’s not hard to say no to them since they are really

understanding, if I don’t agree with them, they’ll just respect my opinion”- Thirdy Agni

Do you feel pressure in school?

“Yes, because of the many activities provided”- Carl Pialan

“Yes. I feel pressured in school. But it is all about adjustment. Finding a routine that

works for you is important to be able to cope you with tasks that needs to be done.”-Hannah

Dumato

The common negative effect of peer pressure is the person being influenced to drinking

alcohol and smoking cigarettes. The psychological effects that peer pressure can cause is

massive due to this many teen agers have traumas for example the fear of abandonment

they fear that they might get abandoned by their peers, the fear of being left out this is

actually one of the biggest reason because they want to fit in and not get left out to new

trends, they cant get out of there comfort zone and they feel trapped inside a box that’s why

many give up cause they can’t find what’s meant for them or they simply are afraid of being

rejected by the society.

The school is where a student can get help but this is also where they gain problems due to

the activities and of course the people there. In schools, students have different circle of

friends and have different hobbies so many students tend to join or wants to join a certain

group this is where peer pressure comes in, they tend to do certain stuffs that can make

them be noticed by the group.

Teachers can help with peer pressure they can first provide opportunities where students

can show their true personalities, make them believe in themselves, and build up their

confidence. It’s important to create opportunities for students to succeed. Once they see

they can, they will have more courage to keep trying. The school should also have zero

tolerance of bullying. Create an environment where students are not afraid to fail and be

ridiculed.

How can the school raise awareness about peer pressure and offer solutions?

“Promoting a culture of diversity and inclusivity, encouraging and giving open

discussions with learners and stakeholders around peer pressure, developing and improving

key communication skills to help in managing negative peer pressure situations, and building

resilience, are some pragmatic ways learners can be supported.” – Jade S. Bulacan, LPT

“A school can spread awareness ang solutions about peer pressures by having it

integrated in home room guidance. Provide activities that would stimulate actions and

solutions to solve or at least lessen peer pressure”- Monsour Casero, LPT

“Promoting a culture of diversity and inclusivity, encouraging open discussions with

students and parents around peer pressure, developing key communication skills to help in

managing negative peer pressure situations, and building resilience, are some practical

ways students can be supported.” – Larson Gatchalian, LPT
