EXPERIMENT NO. 4
SIEVE ANALYSIS OF AGGREGATES
ASTM Designation
ASTM C136 – Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates
OBJECTIVE
The activity aims to introduce students to the procedure of determining the grading or particle size
distribution of materials proposed for use as aggregates or being used as aggregates.
PROCEDURE
1. Obtain proper weight of dry aggregates.
2. Arrange the sieves with decreasing meshed-openings from top to bottom; place a pan at the
bottom.
3. Pass the weighted sample through the nested set of sieves.
4. Weigh the aggregate retained in each sieve.
5. Calculate the cumulative percentage passing in each sieve on the basis of the oven-dry weight of
original sample.
6. Plot the gradation curves for the fine and coarse aggregates on the graph provided

CONCLUSION
particles by size inside a given example. This data can then be utilized to decide consistence
with plan and creation prerequisites. Particle sizing is used in some industries and product
types. Additionally, the data can be used to predict production trends and gain a deeper
comprehension of the relationship between aggregates or blends.
That is why it is so important for students and learners to learn more about the various test-
taking procedures, including which ones are best and how the calculations are done. This
procedure is beneficial to students and learners alike, particularly if the student is about to
select Construction and Management Engineering as an elective in their final year of college
or if this is the field they intend to pursue in the near future.
