ILO AND ITS IMPACT ON LABOUR

LEGISLATION
The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a United
Nations (U.N.) agency. The goal of the ILO is to advance social and
economic justice by setting international labor standards. The ILO has 187
member states and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, with
approximately 40 field offices around the world. The standards upheld by
the ILO are broadly intended to ensure accessible, productive, and
sustainable work worldwide in conditions of freedom, equity, security, and
dignity.

Key labour legislation in India that are directly or indirectly connected


to ILO

1. The Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act, 1946 – This Act defines the conditions of
employment in industrial establishments and provides for the rule-making process.

2. The Trade Union Act, 1926 – This Act lays down the procedures for the registration of trade unions
and their rights and privileges.

3. The Minimum Wages Act, 1948 – This Act provides for the fixation and enforcement of minimum
wages in certain industries to prevent exploitation of workers.

4. The Payment of Wages Act, 1936 – This Act regulates the payment of wages to workers and seeks
to ensure that their wages are paid timely and without any deductions except those authorised by
law.

5. The Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952 – This Act provides for
the establishment of a provident fund for the benefit of employees and the maintenance of a
register of employees.
