INTRODUCTION

Assesing the grades of students in Mabalacat City College, which is there Math
Grade and General Weighted Average (GWA). We survey the 2nd year college students
of Mabalacat City College, as part of our data gathering. Grade is the measure of quality
of a student’s performance in Math subject. On the other hand the General Weighted
Average is where the Math subject is taken along with other subjects. It is the result of
combining the performance rating based on the criteria of a subject. It serves as
indicator of a student’s academic performance in the subject in a given semester. The
results of there Math Grade and General Weighted Average (GWA) of students is base
on their performance. This data gathering is aim to look if there high relationship
between the Math Grade and General Weighted Average (GWA) of students depends
on their performance. The study is significant to the community of Mabalacat City
College because individuals became part of the study together with there grades. It also
able to determine if there Math Grade affect there General Weighted Average (GWA).

SAMPLING SCHEME

The researcher used convenience random sampling, wherein the respondents

are selected in a convenient way or those individuals who are easily to reach out.
Moreover, it is suitable sampling technique because the researcher were given only a
few weeks to gather all the information included the basic information such as their
Name, Year and Program, and especially the Math Grade and GWA. The respondents
were being selected without any qualifications since the focus of the research is the
respondent's Math Grade and GWA. The sampling size of the study was 15, and they
are all girls. The researcher conducted and gathered information thru Facebook
messenger chat then screenshot their conversation. After gathering the data, the
researcher proceed to the computation. In addition, researcher explored the relationship
between the Math Grade and GWA, and the respondents of the study is students of
Mabalacat City College who take math course.

PROBLEM:

Our group wishes to know if there is a relationship between Math Grade (x) and GWA
(y). The data was taken exclusively from family members/relatives. Using a 0.05 level of
significance to determine the answer, the following data is shown on the table below.

Participant X y xy x2 y2
1 89 90.71 8,073.19 7,921 8,228.30
2 86 90 7,740 7,396 8,100

Setting up the Hypothesis

Step 1: State the null and alternative hypothesis

Ho : There is no significant relationship between Math grade and GWA.
Ha : There is a significant relationship between math grade and GWA.

Step 2: Calculate the value of correlation coefficient.

  − ( )( )
=
[ 2 − 2 ][ 1 2 − ( )2 ]

r= 0.81

Step 3: Level of Significance: = 0.05

Step 4: Calculate the value of t computed.

 −2
 =
1 − 2

0.81 15−2 0.81(3.605551275) 2.92049653312 2.92049653312

 = = = = 0.58642987646= 4.980
1− (0.81)2 1− 0.6561 0.3439

t comp = 4.980

Step 5: Decision
From the t- table of values, at 0.05 level of significance t-critical value is ± 2.160.
Since t-computed is 4.980 which is equal to ±2.160, hence, we are going to reject the
Ho and Accept Ha.

Step 6: Conclusion
We can conclude that there is highly significant correlation between math grade and
GWA. Hence when the Grades in math of the participants increased ( decreased) then
the GWA of the participants also increased (decreased).

463.98 463.98
r= r =574.9448913

 = 0.81

INTEPRETATION ( r )

The correlation coefficient of 0.81 indicates a high positive correlation, when Math
Grade increased/decreased, General Weighted Average (GWA) increased/decreased.

5
Testing the Significance of r:

Given Values t-comp and t-crit

∑x = 1,363 t-computed : 4.980

∑y = 1,386.54
t-critical : ± 2.160
∑xy = 126,021.2
∑x2 = 123,913
∑y2 = 128,190.01
