ABB TMAX XT MCCB WITH

MCB BACK UP
Report for ABB Tmax XT5 MCCB with S200 MCB Combination Back up Selectivity

Definition of Current Limiting:

As per IEC 60947-2, a circuit breaker with sufficient short trip time is enough to prevent the short circuit
current from reaching the peak value.

Definition of Back up Protection:

Back up protection means coordination for protection against over currents of two protection devices in
series, where the protection device generally situated on the supply side provide over current protection
with or without the aid of other protection device and avoid excessive stress on downstream. The current
value above which protection is ensured is called the switching current. With back up protection,
upstream breaker helps the load side device to interrupt short circuit current beyond their breaking
capacity in combination. Manufacturer provides table derived from tests based on Appendix-A of
IEC 60947-2 standard.

These techniques are applied to evaluate the selection of breaker for the installation.

This diagram is based on the fault level provided in the coordination study received.

For determining electro dynamic stress, the value of peak current shall be obtained by multiplying the
RMS value of AC application short circuit current by factor “n”. Factor “n” shall be obtained from below
table.

Conclusion:

As validated from the above details and back up chart, the combination of XT5 MCCB with electronic trip
unit suitably selected with prospective fault level in the point of installation (selective main circuit breaker)
as upstream, with S200 series 32 Amp MCB 10kA as downstream, the backup protection is available up to
20kA.

Hence the MCCB limiting characteristics and back up protection shall work safely for the above
installation.
