Lecture 05 Deontology

Deontology

Deontology is an ethical theory that says actions are good or bad according to a clear set of rules.
Its name comes from the Greek word deon, meaning duty. Actions that align with these rules are
ethical, while actions that don't aren't.

What is deontology ethics with example?

Deontological ethics holds that at least some acts are morally obligatory regardless of their
consequences for human welfare. Descriptive of such ethics are such expressions as “Duty for
duty's sake,” “Virtue is its own reward,” and “Let justice be done though the heavens fall.”

What is the difference between deontology and virtue ethics?

Deontology is focused on the means and mindset of the person who is doing the action,
specifically with the relationship between a person and their duties/obligations. In virtue ethics,
one understands and becomes virtuous by finding the golden mean between vices of excess and
deficiency.
