Affrication is a linguistic
process in the matter of
manner of articulation in
which a consonant sound is
produced by combining both
fricative and plosive
properties. An example of
affrication could be
Chair - /tʃeə/ 2

Historical affrication is generally coalescent and
involves the process of replacing the following
neighbouring sounds: /t/, /d/ (for the first word). The
result is either /tʃ/ or /dʒ/ depending on the voice of
the first element
Examples
Nature - /ˈneɪtʃə/
Soldier - /ˈsəʊldʒə/
Culture - /ˈkʌltʃə/
Future - /ˈfjuː.tʃə/

Examples

What you - /wɒ tʃuː/ (The /t/ sound in

"what" becomes an affricate /tʃ/ before
the /j/ sound in "you".)

Would you - /wʊ dʒuː/ (The /d/ sound

in "would" becomes an affricate /dʒ/
before the /j/ sound in "you".)

◈ Process for affrication:
1. Closure: The articulators (e.g., tongue, lips) come together to
form a complete closure, blocking the airflow in the oral cavity.
2. Build-up of pressure: Air pressure builds up behind the
closure as the speaker continues to hold the closure.
3. Gradual release: The closure is released gradually, allowing
the airflow to pass through. However, instead of an abrupt
release, the airflow is partially obstructed, causing turbulent
airflow and generating a fricative-like sound.
4. Fricative phase: During the gradual release, the sound takes
on the characteristics of a fricative, with the articulators
maintaining a partial obstruction in the vocal tract.
5. Resulting affricate: The combined plosive-fricative sound,
known as an affricate, is produced, incorporating features of
both a plosive and a fricative.
