2 Operation
2.1 General instructions

The Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 is a highly sophisticated ultrasonic flowmeter. It should

only be used in the operating conditions and environment where it is designed for.

Warning!
Wrong use of a Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 may not only result in
unreliable performance, but may even lead to hazardous situations.

Please refer to the type plates, located on the meter, for the correct
operating conditions. Never use the meter outside these limitations!

The Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 contains 2 type plates:

• Main plate. Provides information on mechanical design conditions as well as flow
related information such as meter factor and range
• SPU type plate. Provides information on applicable hazardous area approval.
Ensure the meter will never operate outside the limits stated on the type plates. Any
mismatch between the type plates should be reported to Elster NV/SA or you’re local agent
immediately.

For examples of the type plate, refer to the Quick start manual (doc. code:
22.100.200.000.02/2/ latest valid version).

2.2 Meter configuration

On the flow cell of a Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 flowmeter several measuring paths are
incorporated. Two transducers are required for each measuring path. There are two
possible measuring path types in the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6:
• axial path: single reflection
• swirl path: double reflection
Figure 1 shows how the transducer signal of the measuring path types propagate in the
pipe.

The Q.Sonic contains:
• 2 axial paths (single reflection)
• 4 swirl paths (double reflection)
After the meter has been calibrated at a suitable calibration facility, the meter is often used
for custody transfer purposes. With the 2 axial paths asymmetry in the flow profile can be
detected. The 4 swirl paths measure and compensate for swirl in the flow profile. The entire
configuration is completely symmetrical, ensuring the most optimal accuracy.
A view of the path configuration and the path types is shown in Figure 2.

• Internal temperature. This is the temperature measured in the SPU box on the
mainboard. When the electronics is not equipped with the temperature sensor or it is
not working, a preset value will be shown in red.

Figure 9: Diagnostics screen

The submenus ‘Path Diagnostics’ and ‘Correction Factors’, shown on the top of the display
will disappear after some time. By pressing on the ‘UP’ button, they will reappear.

At ‘Path Diagnostics’ an overview is given of all paths and the current performance of each
path individually can be checked. The meter always checks if a path is failing or not, this is
represented at the ‘diagnostic’ information, this can either ‘OK’ or ‘Fail’.

At ‘Correction factors’ an overview is given of all correction factors of the meter.

• k – factor Geometry Corr. This correction factor corrects the size of the flow cell’s body,
based upon the measurements of the internal pressure and temperature sensors. The
factor will only be taken into account if the meter is equipped with the pressure and
temperature sensor and when this function is enabled. Enabling should be done with
the software package ‘SonicExplorer’.
• k – factor Linearization. When a meter is corrected after calibration through
linearization, the adjust factor will be flow depending (interpolated between the
calibration points). The meter can have a linearization for each flow direction.
This factor shows the adjust factor calculated for the current operating flow (and
direction).
• k – factor Adjustment. This is the factor when a meter is corrected after calibration with
one single adjust factor. There can be a different adjust factor for both flow directions.
When operating around zero flow, it possible that this factor is constantly switching from
positive adjust factor to negative adjust factor.
• Voffset Correction. It is possible to put a fixed velocity offset in the meter. This will
normally only be used on special projects. Standard this factor 0 m/s.

With the ‘Info’ tab on top of the ‘basic display’ screen (see Figure 3), some general
information about the electronics and its software can be checked. There are 2 submenus
(see Figure 10):
• Selftests. Some important parts of the electronics will perform a test. Outcome can be
‘PASS’ or ‘FAIL’. If a ‘FAIL’ is encountered, the selftest should be done again. If it
continues to fail, contact Elster NV/SA or you’re local agent.
• SW versions (internal). Herewith all software versions and their matching checksum in
the electronics can be read.

3 Maintenance
The UFM meter contains no moving parts. The transducers are the only components that are in
contact with the gas medium. The materials used for the transducers are resistant to the
conditions that were clearly specified for the measuring instrument. As a result the transducers
and the electronics are virtually maintenance free.

However, Elster NV/SA recommends inspection of the UFM at regular intervals, for example every
week or month. In case of degradation of the meter, appropriate measures can be taken before a
serious failure occurs.

3.1 Collecting data

A good way for a quick health check of the meter can be done through the front panel. How
this should be done is described in chapter 2.3. However this will only provide you
information of the meter at his current status.

For a more detailed indication of the meter’s condition, Elster NV/SA recommends to
perform a trend analysis on the meter’s measured data (comparison of recent measured
data with results from a past period of time). The software package ‘SonicExplorer’ is
specially designed for these propose. More information about this software package can be
obtained at Elster NV/SA or your local agent. It is good engineering practice to record some
of the measured data with regular intervals.

3.2 Inspection of measured data

The following general rules provide a good basis for analysing the measured data:

3.2.1. Sample rate

The process of travel time measurement for all paths is repeated a number of times per
second. This number is called Sample Rate. Typically this is a stable value of about 20 with
a variation of -1.

The sample rate is programmable to be anything between 1 and 100Hz. However, the
actual sample rate may be lower than the programmed value since, particularly with large
size meters, the travel times of the ultrasonic pulses in the gas do not allow for the
programmed sample rate. The UFM will then adjust the sample rate to the highest possible
value. The highest possible sample rate is not necessarily the best setting for optimum
performance. Although the sample rate is not critical, a value between 8 and 25
samples/second is recommended.

3.2.2. Performance

Performance is the pulse acceptance rate, expressed as a percentage for the pulses
transmitted each second. Each transducer transmits a number of pulses each second. To
be accepted as a valid received pulse by the signal processing system, each pulse must
arrive within a small time window, be of sufficient strength, and match a unique waveform

signature. The percentage of accepted pulses is shown as an average value of all

measuring paths, and for each individual path.

At zero flow the performance should be close to 100% (not less than 90%). At higher flow
rates the performance of individual paths may drop to 60% because of flow-induced
attenuation of the ultrasonic pulses. Even with a performance as low as 20 %, at a sample
rate of 15, the accuracy of the gas flow measurement is maintained. It is recommended to
consult the Elster NV/SA (or a local representative) if a path persistently has a performance
lower than 40%.

3.2.3. Velocity of Sound

The UFM calculates the speed of sound in the gas, based on the measured travel times
and the programmed spool piece geometry. This value may be compared to the
(theoretically) expected value, for example as calculated using the AGA-10 equations of
state. The difference between measured and expected value can be as little as 0.25%,
provided that gas composition, temperature and pressure are precisely known.

3.2.4. Gas velocity (zero flow measurement)

When there is no flow through the meter, i.e. the block valve(s) are closed, the corrected
gas velocity should randomly fluctuate between ±0.025 m/s and average very close to zero.
During a sunny day the warm walls of the meter will cause small thermal convection
currents to circulate inside the meter. The ultrasonic meter may actually measure these
very slow currents as an increase in the random fluctuations.

3.2.5. Presentation of AGC-levels and AGC-Limits

AGC limits an levels are presented in decibel (dB).

The AGC ratio (AGC-limit / AGC-level) is very much depending on the meter size and on
the application (operating pressure, amount of CO2, control valve nearby, etc.). It is
preferred to have a high AGC ratio.
The change of the AGC ratio in time is a very useful parameter to predict the performance
of the meter in the future.

3.2.6. Swirl angle

This value indicates the amount of swirl measured by a ultrasonic flow meter, expressed in
degrees. Positive swirl angles signal clockwise swirl whilst negative swirl angles indicates
counter-clockwise swirl. The meter operates reliable if the angle is in between -20 and +20
degrees. When the indicated swirl angle is larger please consult Elster NV/SA for support.

2 Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 gas flow meter

2.1 General

The Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 is a sophisticated, multi-path ultrasonic gas flow meter
manufactured by Elster NV/SA. It has been specifically designed for custody transfer
measuring applications that demand a high degree of accuracy and reliability. It can be
extended with an extra functionality whereby the flowmeter has the possibility to convert the
measured line volume to standardised volume, mass or energy.

2.2 Applicable standards

The Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 is manufactured to be in accordance with European

Directives: ATEX, PED, EMC and optionally MID.

If the meter is ordered for use at a location where European Directives are NOT mandatory,
the meter can alternatively be manufactured in compliance with IECEx, FM Approval or CSA
certificate for use in hazardous area.

Applicable standards for the optional integrated flow computer functionality are: AGA8-92
DC, SGERG-88, AGA-NX19 and ISO 6976.

2.3 Configuration

On the flow cell of an Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 several pairs of transducers are
mounted. Each pair of transducers represents one individual measuring path. There are two
measuring path types on the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6: Axial (single bounce) and swirl
(double bounce) these are shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1: Path types

plus
The Q.Sonic path layout consists of 2 axial paths and 4 swirl paths. This combination
results in a complete symmetrical path layout, ensuring the most optimal accuracy. Figure 2
plus
shows the path layout of the Q.Sonic .

2.4 Calibration
plus
When using the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6, model Q.Sonic in custody transfer
applications, most countries demand (by law) a calibration from a certified calibration
institute, supervised by an inspector of weights and measures. Examples of facilities
generally used for calibrations are Euroloop in Rotterdam (NL), TransCanada Calibrations in
Canada and PIGSAR GH45 or Open Grid Europein Dorsten (D).
If the Q.Sonic Series 6 has to be in accordance with MID, extra restrictions should be taken
into account (see chapter 9.4).

3 Theory of operation
An ultrasonic flow meter is an inferential measurement device that consists of ultrasonic
transducers that are typically located along a pipe's wall. The transducers are inserted into the
piping using a gas tight mechanism. Ultrasonic pulses are alternately transmitted by one
transducer and received by the other one. Figure 3 shows a simple geometry of two transducers,
‘A’ and ‘B’, at a sharp angle “ϕ” with respect to the axis of a straight cylindrical pipe with diameter
“D”. The Q.Sonic Series 6 employs reflection paths, where the acoustic pulses reflect one or more
times off the pipe wall.
B

ϕ
D L v

Figure 3: Ultrasonic measuring line

3.1 Flow velocity measurement

The acoustic pulses are crossing the pipe like a ferryman crossing a river. Without flow, they
propagate with the same speed in both directions. If the gas in the pipe has a flow velocity
different from zero, pulses travelling downstream with the flow will move faster, while those
travelling upstream against the flow will move slower. Thus, the downstream travel times
“tab“ will be shorter, while the upstream ones “tba“ will be longer as compared when the gas is
not moving. Equation 1 illustrates the computation of these times:

Ln  1 1 
VoGrawn = ⋅  − 
2 ⋅ cos(ϕ n )  tabn tban 
Equation 1: raw gas velocity

where:
tabn the downstream travel time of path n.
tban the upstream travel time of path n.
Ln the straight line length of the acoustic path between the two transducers.
VoGraw is the average uncorrected (raw) gas velocity.
ϕn the angle between the gas flow and ultrasonic signal.

The raw gas velocity is corrected by a Reynolds flow profile correction. This correction is
depending on the path type. Also the contribution of the gas velocity of each path to the
combined gas velocity is depending on the path type.

3.2 Correction after calibration

After flow calibration the meter can be adjusted either through an adjust factor or through
linearization. How the meter is adjusted can be visualized at the display (see chapter 6.1).

3.3 Volume flow at line conditions

The volume flow at line conditions QLine is the (adjusted) profile-corrected gas velocity Vline
multiplied by the internal cross section A of the flow cell:

Q line = Vline ⋅ A ⋅ t

= Vline ⋅
π ⋅ D2
4
⋅ 3600 m [ h] 3

Equation 2: calculation of the line volume flowrate

where:
QLine the volume flow at line conditions
Vline the adjusted profile-corrected gas velocity
D the internal diameter of the meter
A the internal crosssection of the flow cell
t time coefficient to go from seconds to hours.

3.4 Volume conversion to standardised conditions

For more detailed information with regards to the conversion from line to base conditions,
please refer to Appendix I.

4 System description
4.1 Flow cell

The flow cell is the part of the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 that is mounted in the piping
system. All components making the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 (SPU, transducers, type
plates and optional pressure and temperature sensors) are mounted on the flow cell, see
Figure 4.

Figure 4: Example of an Elster-Instromet Ultrasonic gas flowmeter

4.2 Signal processing unit

The SPU is mounted in an explosion proof housing. The box consists of two separate
compartments; a main and a rear compartment (see Figure 5).
The main compartment can be opened from the side of the SPU and contains the main
circuit boards. The main compartment also comprises intrinsically safe connections for the
ultrasonic transducers and optional temperature and pressure sensors. All data processing
from excitation of the transducers to calculating the flow rate is handled by the electronics in
this compartment.
To prevent the box from opening by vibration, the covers on the side need to be firmly
tightened and secured with the lock screw in the cover, see Figure 6. When closing the back
compartment ensure all screws are used.
A grounding point is foreseen at the bottom of the SPU. As the meter is already internally
grounding, it is not necessary to use this grounding for normal operation.

The rear compartment comprises a field terminal board used for connecting the Ultrasonic
Flowmeter Series 6 to the end users applications. For detailed information about this see
chapter 5.2.2.

4.3 Transducers

The ultrasonic signals required for the flow measurement are generated and received by
ultrasonic transducers.
Piezoelectric transducers employ crystals or ceramics that are set into vibration when an
alternating voltage is applied to the piezoelectric element. The vibrating element generates
sound waves in the gas. Since the piezoelectric effect is reversible, the element will become
electrically polarised and produce voltages related to the mechanical strain, when the crystal
is distorted by the action of incident sound waves. Because the acoustic impedance of the
gas is much smaller compared to the acoustic impedance of the piezoelectric element, and
to maximise the acoustic efficiency, a matching layer is employed between the gas and the
piezoelectric element.
The transducers used in the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 are type ‘NG’, see Figure 7.
Figure 8 visualises the NG transducer with the mounting bracket.

4.4 Flow cell optional pressure sensor

As an optional feature the UFM can be equipped with a pressure sensor. This pressure
sensor is used for:

5 Installation and commissioning

5.1 Introduction

It is very important to check the shipment of your ultrasonic flow meter equipment. At least a
visual inspection of surfaces and flanges should be performed. In case of damage, contact
Elster NV/SA immediately.

Also verify if all the necessary documentation is available as well. At least you should have:
• Safety instructions (doc. Code: 22.100.200.001.02/2 latest valid version)
• Operation and maintenance manual (doc. Code: 22.100.200.002.02/2 latest valid
revision)
Also look at your project data to see if extra documentation is required and delivered. If
documentation is missing, contact Elster NV/SA or your local agent immediately.

5.2 Installation requirements flow cell

5.2.1. Installing meter in pipeline

The Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 (flow cell, transducers and SPU) is shipped in a suitable
box (e.g. wooden box, cardboard box, …). Carefully disassemble the box. Remove the
transport straps from the flow cell, and then move the ultrasonic flow meter (using the lifting
lugs provided on the flow cell) to the installation site. Install the meter according to end-
user’s company regulations and applicable local and national requirements. To ensure
optimal performance of the UFM, comply with the up- and downstream spool requirements
specified for your particular UFM (see your order documentation).

Warning!
To avoid possible injury, make sure the lifting equipment is
suitable for the weight of the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6.
Always use the lifting lugs and make sure lifting equipment is
certified and shows no damage or wear.
Eyebolts shall be inspected before each use and used according
to the manufacturer’s specification.

Be aware!

 • Special attention needs to be taken when the Ultrasonic

Flowmeter Series 6 has to be installed in accordance with MID
(see chapter 9.5).
• For FM Approved and CSA certified Ultrasonic Flowmeter see
also their respective Control drawing and particular installation
remarks in the Safety instructions (doc. Code:
22.100.200.001.02/2 latest valid version).

5.2.2. Testing installation

The flowcell is always hydrotested in-house at the correct hydrotest pressure before the
transducers were installed on the ultrasonic flowmeter. Herewith all welding of the flowcell is
checked. When an Ultrasonic flowmeter series 6 is installed in a pipe line, it is no longer
possible to hydrotest the pipeline. Water can be trapped between the housing and the
transducers, causing the meter to have difficulties measuring.

Before pressurizing check all pressure points on the meter. If necessary remove the cover
caps to have a clear view of the entire pressure point, particularly when an adapter is fitted
on the meter body.

5.3 Wiring instructions

All detailed information about wiring is stated the ‘Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 Wiring
Instructions’ (document code 03.302.101.003.07/2), as well as Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series
6 Safety Instructions (document code 22.100.200.001.02/2). Please refer to these
documents for correct wiring of the Ultrasonic flowmeter series 6.

5.4 SPU configuration

When the meter is installed and correctly wired, it’s advisable to read out the parameter
settings of the meter. If the meter had been calibrated before, the parameter set-up should
be compared to the one of the calibration.

The parameter set-up can be read with the software package ‘SonicExplorer’. Connection
should be made through the Ethernet or VDSL communication, more detailed information
about this matter can be found in the manual of the software packages. When mismatches
are detected; contact Elster NV/SA or your local representative immediately.

Warning!
When opening the SPU (either main – or rear compartment), obey
the rules and regulations that apply to hazardous area operations.

The electronics and the main plate of the UFM should be sealed. The sealing should be
done by either the calibration facility or by Elster NV/SA. This should be done according to
chapter 4.7; any mismatch has to be reported to Elster NV/SA or your local representative
immediately.

5.5 Cold commissioning

During cold commissioning the meter is pressurized with a known gas composition, at a
known temperature and pressure, because in some cases the UFM will not be able to
measure under atmospheric conditions.

A thorough functional test is performed by means of a PC and diagnostic software package

(‘SonicExplorer’). Diagnostics and status per measuring path and the zero flow can be
checked, assuming there is sufficient pressure in the meter. A technician of Elster NV/SA
will, if this has been agreed, verify measurements and check the system performance.

5.6 Hot commissioning

The hot commissioning is in most cases the last test of the UFM and can be witnessed by a
representative of the client and, if required, by an inspector of weights and measures for the
official sealing. Under this condition there is process gas in the pipe and a flow test is being
performed. The performance, AGC Levels/Limits and zero flow are checked again. If
possible, the gas flow running through the UFM will be compared to another flowmeter in
the line. Most UFM are calibrated gas flow meters, so the measured value is reliable without
exception. Furthermore, the interaction with the flow computer can be tested.

7 Maintenance, service and repair

7.1 Introduction

The Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 ultrasonic gas flow meter contains no moving parts. The
transducers and internal pressure sensor are the only components that are in contact with
the gas medium. The materials used for the transducers are selected for the measuring
conditions that were clearly specified for the instrument. As a result the transducers and the
electronics are virtually maintenance free. However, Elster NV/SA recommends inspection
of the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 with the software packages ‘SonicExplorer’ at regular
intervals (e.g. monthly). In case of degradation of the meter, appropriate measures can be
taken on time.

For detailed information about maintenance, please refer to operation and maintenance
manual (doc. code: 22.100.200.002.02/2 last valid revision).

7.2 Exchanging components

Different parts of the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 metering system like transducers,
electronic boards, etc can be exchanged easily. The digital programmed pulse shape and
pulse identification of the meter is always identical. Therefore the electronic- and transducer
products need no adjustment. This means that re-programming or re-calibration of the meter
after exchanging any identical part of the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 metering system is
not necessary.

Spare parts of the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 metering system must be supplied by
Elster NV/SA. After exchanging parts of the Q.Sonic Series 6 metering system the present
“calibration” sealing must be renewed, see the chapter 4.7.

Caution!

Before exchanging any components verify with your local

metrology authority on proper procedures. It may be required that
the operation needs to be witnessed by a representative of the
local authority.

Warning!
Exchanging of components should only be done with the same
type and model; unless otherwise specified by Elster NV/SA.

7.2.1. Pressure sensors exchange

The meter might be equipped with an optional pressure sensor for internal use (see
chapters 4.4). As the pressure sensors are specially designed for the Ultrasonic Flowmeter
Series 6, they may only be exchanged with sensors from Elster NV/SA.

This reproduction is sole property of Elster NV/SA and is subject to the conditions that it or any information contained therein will not be used in any way PAGE

Warning!
For the pressure sensor it’s absolutely necessary to depressurize
the line before exchanging.

7.2.2. Temperature sensors exchange

The meter might be equipped with an optional temperature sensor for internal use (see
chapters 4.5). As the temperature sensors are specially designed for the Ultrasonic
Flowmeter Series 6, they may only be exchanged with sensors from Elster NV/SA.
As the temperature sensor only measures the flow cell temperature and is not in contact
with the gas in the pipe, exchanging can be done under pressure.

7.2.3. Transducer exchange

Each transducer is a separate component of the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 that can be
exchanged independently. This can be done without degradation of the measuring
properties and accuracy (thus the calibration) of the Ultrasonic Gas Flow Meter.
However, as the transducers are paired up during production, Elster NV/SA always
recommends changing both transducers of an acoustic path, if possible.

Warning!
Obey the rules and regulations that apply to hazardous area
operations and those with respect to custody transfer regulations
(sealing).

Exchanging a transducer can take place when the line with the
Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 is depressurized:
Refer to specific installation instructions delivered with the
transducers: Transducer exchange at atmospheric conditions
(Document code: 03.200.001.001.02/2 last valid revision).

Optionally exchanging a transducer can be done when the Ultrasonic

Flowmeter Series 6 is pressurized:
A special tool is required for this: the ‘retraction tool NG
transducers’. Please familiarise yourself with the documentation
regarding this special tool: Retraction tool NG transducers
(document code: 03.203.101.001.02/2 last valid revision).
Before beginning this procedure please verify if this is allowed by
the safety standards set by your company and local safety
regulations. If in doubt, DO NOT remove the transducers under
pressure.

7.2.4. SPU exchange

Parts of the SPU can be exchanged without problems, provided that the appropriate
hardware and software versions are used. The product numbers can be found on the PCB
and have following structure xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx. The software version and its checksums can
be checked through the front panel (see chapter 6.1).

This will not affect the measuring characteristics and the accuracy (and as a consequence
the calibration) of the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6. However if the board is sealed after
calibration, please contact Elster NV/SA or your local representative before proceeding with
the exchange.
When exchanging the SPU (or parts of the SPU), refer to specific manual delivered with the

additional meter correction and additional counter administration due to error handling.

The device software of an Ultrasonic Flowmeter series 6 equipped with integrated flowcomputer
functions consists of the Basic System, an Ultrasonic measurement AFB, two Flow Conversion
AFB’s and one Gas Quality AFB. This configuration implements a typical “one stream, two flow
directions” application. Where each flow conversion AFB represents a flow direction, see Figure
22. With Forward flow only the ‘Flow conversion FWD’ AFB will be addressed and with reverse
flow only the ‘flow conversion REV’ AFB will be addressed.

Remarks:
• One Flow Conversion AFB is necessary for each flow direction. For the ultrasonic meter
standard the 2 flow directions with their flow conversion AFB are available.
• One Gas Quality AFB is necessary for each C calculation working with different
measurement data (pressure / temperature and/or gas quality) or based on different
calculation rules (as to calculation standards and/or base conditions).
• The Flow Conversion and Gas Quality AFBs working with the same measurement data
are linked via parameterization. The parameterization supports the grouping of AFBs in
user-defined structures. This way, it is easy to identify which AFBs belong together in
both, the parameterization user interface and the device screen.

I.1 Flow Conversion AFB

The Flow Conversion AFB generates counters for volume at base and measurement
conditions as well as mass and energy by using the gas meter measurement data and the
results of the Gas Quality AFB. It performs the meter correction and the counter
administration due to error handling and – if applicable – takes the counter activation
message (e.g. for flow direction switching) into consideration, see Figure 23.

Figure 23: Data flow for Flow Conversion AFB

The Flow Conversion AFBs are responsible for generating the fiscal counters. Each single
Flow Conversion AFB administrates the counters of a distinct flow direction.
Each Flow Conversion AFB provides a so-called fiscal display wherein the main counter for
volume at base conditions is preferentially indicated.
That means that the Vb counter is highlighted, marked with a preceding special icon and
displayed using a larger font size (see Figure 24).

In most ultrasonic flowmeter displays, there are labels that are designed as hyperlinks.
Hyperlinks are underlined and displayed in blue color. Using these hyperlinks is the most
intuitive way for switching to subordinate displays showing further values and results.
Figure 26 shows an example of a Flow Conversion fiscal display; Table 4 lists the target
displays of the available hyperlinks as well as the values and results included.

Gas meter correction (optional)

The optional gas meter correction of the Flow Conversion AFB uses up to 10 calibration
3
points, each of them consisting of the flow rate in m /h and the related error in %.
The correction factor Cf is calculated for any measured flow rate Q by linear interpolation
between the parameterized calibration points. If Q falls below the lowest flow of all calibra-
tion points, the correction factor obtained for that flow is retained (no extrapolation). The
behavior regarding high flow rates is similar: Above the highest flow rate of all calibration
points, the correction factor remains at the value obtained for that flow rate. As the EN12405
standard prescribes in § 4.4 a special behavior of the gas meter correction below Qmin and
above Qmax, following additional rules are applied:
• no gas meter correction is performed below Qmin (Cf := 1).
• above Qmax, the correction factor remains at the value obtained at Qmax.

The calibration points are specified in the gas meter's calibration certificate and have to be
parameterized in the related Flow Conversion AFB, as well as the minimum and maximum
flow rates Qmin and Qmax. During operation, for each operating point the gas meter
correction is carried out by applying the calculated correction factor Cf as follows:

Vc = Vm * Cf
Qc= Qm* Cf
Where:
Vm = volume at measurement conditions
Vc = volume at measurement conditions, gas meter correction applied
Qm = flow rate at measurement conditions
Qc = flow rate at measurement conditions, gas meter correction applied
Cf = correction factor

I.2 Gas Quality AFB

The Gas Quality AFB calculates special characteristics of the gas, using gas quality data,
pressure and temperature measurements and taking the base conditions to be applied into
consideration.
The gas quality data are either provided by the Basic System or parameterized as constant
values.
In detail, the Gas Quality AFB performs the following tasks (also see Figure 28):
• Normalization of the gas component vector, if required.
• Calculation of Compression factor C (and the interim results Compressibility factors Zm
and Zb, K factor) according to either:
o AGA8-92 DC (ISO 12213-2).
o SGERG-88 (ISO 12213-3).
o AGA-NX19 mod.
o AGA-NX19 mod BR.KOR.3H.
o AGA-NX19 GOST.
• Calculation of density at base / measurement conditions and relative density, according
to either:
o AGA8-92DC.
o ISO 6976.

Read instruction manuals before handling or operating device! See Quick Start manual for
reference list.
Storage & transportation (also refer to your flowmeter Shipping and Storage manual):
- Use a fork-lift or fork-truck for transportation, loading and unloading of the packed
ultrasonic gas flow meter. The wooden cover of the box is not suitable for the use of
strap belts and a crane.
- If the package has been removed from the product, lifting and moving may only be
carried out using suitable, properly fitted lifting lugs.
- Take care that the meter will be installed on a vibration free location. Continuous
vibration or shocks may have disadvantageous effect on the construction of the flow
meter.
- The back and main compartments of the electronics enclosure may be provided with a
silica gel bag in the Ex box. Before powering, take the silica gel bag out of enclosure.
- Always store or transport the meter with a silica gel bag in the SPU box, to absorb
excessive humidity. Replace the silica gel with a fresh one before it is saturated. Check
on a regular basis (e.g. monthly).
All forged meters bodies sizes 3” (DN80) to 12” (DN300) are supplied with ½” NPT Pr adapters
and ½” NPT blind plugs. Adapters and plugs are sealed with PTFE tape and hydrotested with
meter body. After that hydrotest, adapters and plugs are painted together with meter body.
Where necessary, seals on Pm (Pr) point adapter (at both ends) and blind plug shall be
replaced with appropriate sealant for the application. Hold Pr point adapter with 30mm wrench
while removing blind plug or fitting new connections. ALWAYS CHECK NEWLY MADE
CONNECTIONS FOR LEAKS.
IT IS NOT ALLOWED TO DO A HYDROTEST WHEN TRANSDUCERS ARE INSTALLED ON
THE ULTRASONIC FLOWMETER. Water can be trapped between the transducers and the
spoolpiece. It is very hard to remove this afterwards. This water can cause the ultrasonic
flowmeter to incorrect operation.
Installation, maintenance and replacement may only be carried out by qualified personnel
under safe conditions.
Always use a gas detector during servicing of the meter!
Obey the rules and regulations that apply to hazardous area operations and those with respect
to custody transfer regulations (sealing).
Pressurized part involved. When executing any work, comply with the regulations that are
specifically stipulated applicable to pressurized installations in a possible explosive danger area
(as the case may be).
Explosion proof box with the electronics inside may never be opened when meter is energized.
Do not open the enclosure when explosive atmosphere may be present (see label & manual).
Use the ultrasonic meter only for intended application. Restrict to media and pressure &
temperature limits. Never use ultrasonic meter outside of these limits (for information see tag
plate).
It is not allowed to perform repair and maintenance activities on an operating ultrasonic meter.
The meter is pressurized and is used for dangerous media. Removing / exchanging parts
during operation can cause severe harm or even death.
When a non-retractable transducer needs to be taken out of the flow cell, the meter and the
process line must be de-pressurized and have ambient temperature suitable to handle.
In case of retractable transducers, it is only allowed to exchange these retractable transducers
during operation of the meter when the procedure for exchanging transducers, as described in
the manual from the manufacturer, is strictly followed.
Be careful when removing transducers, media from the process line may still come out. This
media can be poisonous, inflammable or dangerous in a different kind. To avoid these
dangerous situations precautions need to be taken.
(In any doubt about the type of transducers / manual contact manufacturer: “sales@elster-
instromet.com” or your local agent).

Page 16 of 17 22.100.200.001.02/2/D
Safety prescriptions

When the meter needs to be taken out of the process line, this process line must be de-
pressurized.
The meter can be used for media with high or low temperatures, within specified range. Any
contact with the meter can cause severe harm.
Always use the correct tools and parts. Never use pneumatically powered tools, electrically
powered tools or hydraulically powered tools to perform retraction of an Ultrasonic Transducer.
Always leak test the meter after installation.
Take care of proper grounding of the meter.
To prevent water entering the flameproof certified box, firmly tighten the box when closing.
Take care of preventive inspection of the meter (environment - & weather influence).

Removing internal coating and tape

BEFORE INSTALLATION REMOVE
CONSERVING COATING INSIDE SPOOLPIECE
Before this ultrasonic gas flowmeter was shipped an conservative protection layer has been applied on the
inside of the meter. It has been applied immediately after the internal of the meter has been in contact with
the atmosphere (oxygen) and should be removed prior to installing the meter in-line or calibration. The face
of the transducers is not coated.
The face of some particular transducers might be protected against the coating by means of tape that can be
removed easily. Prior to installation of the flowmeter verify there is no tape.

The type of coating applied in the spoolpiece of Ultrasonic flow meter

VCI foam type: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Vapour Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) foam has been applied if its type ref. is mentioned above. The foam needs
to be removed before installation. The foam itself is not harmful and can be thrown away as standard
garbage. It is recommended to use gloves when handling the foam.

Tectyl type: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Tectyl coating has been applied if its type ref. is mentioned above. To remove tectyl coating use cloth and a
solvent (e.g. Solvent thinner). Avoid the use of chlorinated or highly aromatic solvents. If the tectyl layer is
dried out removal of it takes some effort. Do not clean the face of the transducer with solvent. If cleaning of
the transducer is needed, which should not be the case, use only a dry cloth.

Oil type: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Oil coating has been applied if its type ref. is mentioned above. Removal of oil is not really needed. Because
it is not dried out the gas-flow will certainly remove the layer present. However it is preferred to remove it
using cloth and a solvent. Do not clean the face of the transducer with solvent. If cleaning of the transducer is
needed, which should not be the case, use only a dry cloth.

3 Packing
3.1 Packing preparations for re-transportation of an UFM from a site

Before packing the UFM:

• Depressurize the measuring line and make sure the dismounting of the UFM can take
place in a safe environment. Also unwire the UFM from the Flow computer according to
your UFM user manual.

• Make sure that all entries are properly closed. Close open glands with e.g. piece of
cable to prevent dust or water entering the SPU.

• Do not remove transducer cables or disassemble any transducer. Some transducer

models do not contain serviceable parts and may not be disassembled, tightened or
loosened at all!

• If a Flow computer is shipped along as well, this must be packed in a separate box.
Take necessary precautions when putting that package in the box together with the
UFM.

• A flow conditioner can be transported in the same box with the UFM.

• The UFM should be transported in a suitable box, ensuring the UFM cannot roll over
and with extra support of the SPU (this can be either cardboard, wood, or ….). For re-
transportation, it is easiest to use the same box the meter has arrived in. However
check if this box is still suited and in perfect condition!

When these preparations are made, continue with the packing instruction listed below.

3.2 Packing instruction

The following packing instruction ensures a safe and secure transport for an UFM:

• Protect the flowcell from corrosion during long term storage by applying a long term
coating (e.g. Tectyl, ENSIS DW 2462 or VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) impregnated
foam) on unpainted surfaces (inner wall, flange faces. Do not coat the transducer and
sensor faces).

In case of short term coating, it’s sufficient to moisten the inside of the spoolpiece with
oil coating. Do not coat the transducer and sensor faces.

On the attached safety prescriptions it should be clear which corrosion protective

method is used.

• Use a suitable crane or fork-truck to lift the spoolpiece and place it on the spool
supporting parts of the box. While the spoolpiece is lifted in the air, remove the

supporting legs from the ultrasonic gas flowmeter. Place them in a secure place in the
box.

• When packed by Elster NV/SA, a document with Safety prescriptions for the ultrasonic
flowmeter is clearly visible attached to the explosion proof box

• Depending on the type of transportation box extra care needs to be taken to ensure the
meter is in a stable and fixed position.

• If applicable, the flow conditioner can be packed as well in the box. Ensure it is properly
fixed.

• Before closing the box, take pictures of the gas flowmeter fixed in the box (and the flow
conditioner, if applicable).

• Put the shipping documents on the outside of the box in a fixed and secure position.

4 Shipping & storage

4.1 Shipping instructions

Always use a fork-lift or fork-truck for transportation, loading onto and unloading of the
packed ultrasonic gas flow meter from a lorry. The wooden cover of the box is not suitable
for the use of strap belts and a crane.

A crane and strap belts are only to be used to lift the ultrasonic gas flow meter from the box
by means of the lifting lugs.

The dimensions and weight of the package depend on the type and size of the ultrasonic
gas flow meter and are to be specified on the packing list.

For larger ultrasonic gas flowmeters and complete stations the centre of gravity is roughly
to be found in the centre of the bottom plane of the box and at 1/3 of the total box height.

4.2 Storage instructions

If the ultrasonic gas flow meter equipment needs to be stored for a certain period of time
before installation the following storage conditions do apply:

• Don’t ever pile packages (crates or boxes).

• To protect the meter from corrosion; it’s recommended to use either:

o VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) impregnated foam

o Tectyl

o Coating on all non coated areas of the spoolpiece (e.g. inside, flange
surfaces,...), to prevent it from corrosion. Be aware:

Do not spray the optional pressure sensor opening and never use any coating
on the surface of the transducers. This could permanently damage the
transducers!
When the tectyl coating has dried out, removal may take some effort. Use a
cloth and a solvent for this (e.g. solvent thinner). However, do not clean the
face of the transducer with solvent. If cleaning of the transducer is needed,
which should not be the case, use only a dry cloth.

• Storage air temperature: -20 °C - +60 °C.

• Storage relative air humidity: 5% - 95% non-condensing.

• If a Flow conditioner is provided with the meter, treat this as a non-coated area of the
meter and apply tectyl coating to protect it from corrosion.

1 Introduction
This document describes the serial communication protocol for measured data of the following ultrasonic flow
meters Series 6 from Elster-instromet:
- CheckSonic series 6
- Q.Sonic series 6
- Vx.sonic
atom
- Q.Sonic
plus
- Q.sonic
max
- Q.sonic

Information is passed in messages between the ultrasonic flow meter and a master device. A message is a data
packets conforming to certain rules. The information may be measured data, a command or a response to a
command. Commands are passed from a master device to the ultrasonic flow meter, measured data and
commands responses are passed from the ultrasonic flow meter to the master device.
The series 6 ultrasonic flow meter is equipped with two serial ports that can be independently configured as
RS232 or RS485. On these ports the ModBus data protocol shall be implemented to allow existing equipment
such as flow computers and Supervisory systems to read measured data from the meter.
In addition an extended protocol is available to read out the extended capabilities of the series 6 ultrasonic flow
meters.

2 OSI Layer 1: The Hardware Layer

2.1 Introduction
The physical layer is concerned with both the physical and electrical interface between the user
equipment and the network terminating equipment. It provides the link layer with a means of
transmitting a serial bit stream between the two correspondent systems.
The ultrasonic flow meters from Elster-Instromet are fitted with a serial interface software configurable
as RS-485 or RS-232.

2.2 RS-485 hardware connections

The RS-485 electrical standard is used on a shielded twisted pair data link. The RS-485 terminals are
called A and B. The following rules apply when connecting an ultrasonic flow meter to external
equipment:
• RS-485 devices should be connected "1:1" (or "straight through"). This means that the SPU
terminal A is connected to the external equipment's terminal A, and the SPU terminal B is
connected to the external equipment's terminal B.

2.3 RS-232C hardware connections

• Equipment configured as DCE transmits data on pin 2, and receives data on pin 3.
• Equipment configured as DTE transmits data on pin 3, and receives data on pin 2.
• A standard "1:1" (or "straight through") serial cable must be used when interfacing Data Circuit-
terminating Equipment (DCE) with Data Terminal Equipment (DTE).
• A "null modem" serial cable must be used when interfacing DTE to DTE (or DCE to DCE).

3 OSI Layer 2: The Link Layer

3.1 Introduction
The link layer builds on the physical connection and provides a reliable information transfer facility.

3.2 General characteristics

A serial data link is used. Specifications:
- Transmission mode: asynchronous, half duplex (RS-485) or full duplex (RS-232C)
- Transmission rate - instrument type dependent:
o programmable: 300 – 115200.
o Normal values are: 4800 bps, 9600 bps (default), 19200 bps or 38400 bps
- Start bits: 1
- Data bits: 8 (LSbit first)
- Stop bits: 1
- Parity - instrument type dependent: none (default), or even.

3.3 Message format

Frame synchronisation can be maintained in the RTU transmission mode only by simulating a
synchronous message. The receiving device monitors the elapsed time between receipt of characters.
If 3½ times elapse without a new character or completion of frame, then the device flushes the frame
and assumes that the next byte received will be an address, see Figure 1.
Description of the message fields:

Figure 1: RTU message frame format

• The T3.5 field represents the time-out limit (3½ character times) that provides frame
synchronisation.
• The address field immediately follows the beginning of the frame and consist of 8 bits (1byte).
These bits indicate the user assigned address of the slave device that is to receive the message
sent by the attached master. Each slave will respond to a query that contains its address. When
the slave sends a response, the slave address informs the master which slave is communicating.
Valid addresses range from 1 to 247. Broadcast messages – which have address 0 – are not
supported by Elster-Instromet ultrasonic flowmeters.
• The function code field tells the addressed device which function to perform. Refer to chapter
Error! Reference source not found. for list of function codes (and detailed description of their
meaning) implemented in the Elster-Instromet ultrasonic flowmeters series 6.
The high order bit in the function code field is set by the slave device to indicate other than normal
response is being transmitted to the master device. See chapter 3.4 for a description of exception
responses. This bit remains 0 if the message is a query or a normal response message.
• The Data field contains information needed by the addressed device to perform the specific
function or it contains data collected by the device in response to a query or limits. For example,
the function code tells the slave to read a holding register and the data field is needed to indicate
which register to start at and how many to read.
• The checksum field consists of 16 bits (2 bytes) which contain the CRC-16 checksum of the
message. This field allows the master and slave devices to check the message for errors in the
transmission. Sometimes, because of electrical noise or other interference, a message may be

changed slightly while it is on its way from one unit to another. The error checking assures that
the slave or master does not react to messages that have changed during transmission. This
increases the safety and the efficiency of the communication system.

3.4 Exception responses

The high order bit of the function code field is set by the slave device to indicate that other than a
normal response is being transmitted to the master device.
Operation errors are those involving illegal data in a message or difficulty in communicating. These
errors result in an exception response. The exception response codes are listed in Table 1.

Code Name Meaning

01 Illegal Function The message function received is not an allowable action for the
device
02 Illegal Data Address The address referenced in the data field is not an allowable address
for the device
Table 1: Supported error codes

When a slave device detects one of these errors, it sends a response message to the master
consisting of a slave address, function code, error code and error check fields, see Figure 2.

Figure 2: Exception response message frame format

3.5 Bits and Bytes

Bits and bytes are handled according to the following rules:
• Bits are numbered 0 through 7; bit 0 is the least significant bit, bit 7 is the most significant bit. The
N
decimal value of bit N is 2 .
• The bits of a byte are transmitted in ascending order: LSbit first; MSbit last.

4 OSI Layer 6: The Presentation Layer

4.1 Introduction
The presentation layer is concerned with the representation (syntax) of the data during transfer
between two correspondent application layer protocol entities.
The presentation layer maps the application layer's abstract data types to the link layer's data units
(bytes).

4.2 Abstract data types

The presentation layer recognises the following abstract data types:
• Short Word: Two bytes (16 bits) containing an integer number between 0 and 65535. Byte order:
MSB first, LSB last.
• Long Word: Four bytes (32 bits) containing an integer number between 0 and + 4294967295.
Byte order: MSB first, LSB last.
• Float Four bytes containing a floating point number (IEEE-754). Byte order: MSB first, LSB last.
The bytes can be viewed as 32 contiguous bits, which divided into fields as per Figure 3.

Figure 3: abstract data type: float

Where:
o Sign is a 1-bit field that contains the value 0 if the real value is positive; 1 if the real
value is negative.
o Exponent is an 8-bit field that contains a value offset by 127; in other words, the
actual exponent can be obtained from the exponent field by subtracting 127. An
exponent field of all 0s or all 1s represents special cases. Otherwise, the real is called
normalised.
o Fraction is a 23-bit field that contains the fractional part of the real value, represented
in binary scientific notation. The most-significant digit of the fraction field is not
actually represented, because by definition, this digit contains a value of 1 unless the
real number is 0 or denormalised.

1 Introduction
1.1 General

This document provides detailed information about wiring an ultrasonic flowmeter series 6.
For general information about the ultrasonic flow meter series 6, please read the quick start
manual (doc. code: 22.100.200.000.02/2 latest valid version). Before performing any activity
on the ultrasonic flowmeter, please familiarize yourself with the safety instructions (doc.
code: 22.100.200.001.02/2 latest valid version).

1.2 Overview SPU

The SPU box contains 2 separated compartments; a main and a rear compartment (see
Figure 1 and Figure 2). The main compartment can be opened from the side of the SPU
and contains the most important circuit boards. All connections herein are factory set and
shouldn’t be adjusted on site. Therefore it is strongly advised to only open this compartment
after consultation with Elster NV/SA.

Figure 1: SPU compartments Figure 2: Rear Compartment

All connections on the meter should be made at the rear compartment (see Figure 2). Five
connection holes are provided; the thread type can be either M20 or ½” NPT. Unused holes
shall be equipped with certified stopping plugs; non-certified plugs (e.g. used for transport
or storage) shall also be replaced by certified plugs. The client is responsible to provide
suitable glands and stopping plugs, with regards to e.g. thread type, hazardous area
certification, ingress protection.

The rear compartment is equipped with the field terminal board (see Figure 3). On this PCB
all connections for external wiring are placed, therefore connecting to a flow computer only
the connection on this PCB should be used.
Optional a DSL modem is placed behind the field terminal board. This is for a long distance
network connection.

1.3 Overall instructions

For wiring the meter suited armoured shielded cables must be used (communication cables
should also be twisted), whereby the cables are protected from mechanical damages as
well as electrical interference. In addition ensure length, diameter, core and resistance of
the cables provide a most optimal match for the particular application.

Be aware!

Special attention needs to be taken when the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 has
to be installed in accordance with MID (see quick start manual (doc. code:
22.100.200.000.02/2 latest valid version).
For FM Approved Ultrasonic Flowmeter series 6 see also the control drawing
and installation remarks in the Safety Instructions (doc. code:
22.100.200.001.02/2 latest valid version).

For wiring reliable and durable connection it is highly recommended to use

insulated wire end terminals.
To avoid cables ‘hanging’ in the glands; all cables must be ‘’clamped and
cleated’ properly and close to the UFM connections.
The SPU can rotate almost 360°, keep this in mind for the length of the cables.
Ensure they can rotate as well, if needed.

2 Power connection (TB1)

In Table 1 an overview is given of the power connections of the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6.
The position of the power connection is stated in Figure 3.

Pin number Signal name Description

3 24 VDC DC power input 24V nominal
2 0 VDC DC power ground
1* EARTH Power earth
* Be aware!

In case the ultrasonic flow meter body is connected to a cathodic protection system, leave pin number 1
unconnected; as in that case the ‘earth’ of the external power supply should NOT BE CONNECTED.

Table 1: Power connections (TB1)

For choosing the correct cable for wiring the power connection, please refer to the general
instruction in chapter 1.3 and specific instruction in Table 2. When wiring the meter ensure all
requirements are fulfilled. In case of accidental overvoltage the UFM contains a built-in surge
protection.

2
Maximal cable core 2.5 mm
Maximal cable length 700 m
(max. 5 ohm / wire)
Voltage at the field terminal board 18 – 30 VDC
(24 V nominal)
Nominal power consumption 20 Watt
Table 2: Power connection, wire specification

To prevent the ending of the flow measurement as result of a power failure; it is recommended to
connect the UFM to an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). If MID applies, the UFM needs to be
powered by an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).

Warning!

For compliance with EN-IEC 61010 (also harmonized under EU Low Voltage
directive 2006/95/EC) the SPU requires an external power supply, limited-
energy (< 30 Vdc max. 8A), reinforced insulation is provided between input and
output by safety transformer and distances on PCB.
Disconnecting means from supply source shall be provided in the end use.

Depending on the switch ‘SW4’ it is also possible to power the meter through the ethernet
connections, for more detailed information please see chapters 3.1.1 and 4.1.3.

3 Communication connections
This chapter provides detailed information on communication wiring of the Ultrasonic Flowmeter
Series 6. For choosing the correct cables, do not only follow the specification of this chapter, but
also refer to the general instruction in chapter 1.3.

3.1 Network (TB2 and J4)

Only with Elster software package ‘SonicExplorer’ it is possible to perform any

parameterization on the meter. Both software packages can only connect with the meter
through a network connection. This network connection can be either Ethernet or DSL.

It is only possible to connect through DSL when the field terminal board is equipped with
the optional DSL modem print board (see Figure 4). With DSL it is possible to get a network
communication over a total maximum length of 1 km.

Figure 4: Optional DSL modem print board

When connecting through DSL, certain switches on the field terminal board need to be
aligned, see chapter 4.1.2. With the switches on the DSL modem itself, it’s possible to fine
tune the quality of the communication, see chapter 5.

4 Switches and LED indication

4.1 Switches on the field terminal board

The field terminal board contains four switches, SW1 to SW4 (see Figure 5), to control
communication lines and power input.

Figure 5: switches on the flied terminal board

4.1.1. SW1

This switch is placed for the line termination of the serial communication lines (see Table 5).
Every transmission line has to be terminated with the right impedance. Certainly with long
lines, like with RS 485 connections, a correct line termination is important. In transmission
lines without termination, the signal reflects at the end of the cable. This reflection interferes
with the original signal so a cacophony of signals is seen at the receiver.

In practice the line is terminated at the last meter in the RS485 multidrop network with a
resistor. The ‘SW1’ switch has two separate line terminations, one for each RS 485 port.
• ‘SW1-1’: is the line termination of port 1: (pin number 1-3 of TB3, see Table 5).
• ‘SW1-2’: is the line termination of port 2: (pin number 4-6 of TB3, see Table 5).

The line termination is enabled when the switch is placed to the ‘ON’ position.

4.1.2. SW2 and SW3

‘SW2’ and ‘SW3’ are both used to switch the communication of the meter from Ethernet to
DSL. ‘SW2’ consists of 2 separate switches; together with ‘SW3’ they all should be aligned
the same (either up or down).
• For communication through DSL: ‘SW2’ and ‘SW3’ should be up. Communication
should now be taken at pin number 9 -10 of TB2, see Table 3.
• For communication through ethernet: ‘SW2’ and ‘SW3’ should be down.
Communication should now be taken at TB2 or J4, see Table 3 and Table 4.

Please keep in mind, that it is not possible to have communication with the Ultrasonic
Flowmeter Series 6 through ethernet and DSL at the same time.

4.1.3. SW4

This switch controls if the meter needs to be powered through TB1 or through the ethernet
connection.
• If the switch is up: the power should be foreseen through TB1 connector (see Table 1).
• If the switch is down: the power should be foreseen through the ethernet connection
(see Table 3 and Table 4).

4.2 LED indication at the display

The display at the front of the SPU contains LED’s to visualize the status of the power,
connection and performance of the meter. Detailed information can be found in the quick
start manual (doc. code: 22.100.200.000.02/2 latest valid version).

5 Optional DSL modem

For DSL communication the SPU must be equipped with the optional DSL modem (Figure 4)
behind the field terminal board (see Figure 3). Wiring of the DSL communication at the UFM
should be done as described in Table 3.
At the ‘control room’, it’s recommended to use Elster NV/SA own designed VDD DSL modem.
Detailed information about this modem can be found in doc: 03.302.101.050.07/2 (latest valid
version).

5.1 Switches

The DSL modem contains 4 DIP switches (see Figure 6), whereby the DSL communication
can be fine-tuned and aligned. The external VDD DSL modem also contains these 4 DIP
switches. For optimal communication ensure both modems are aligned, as described
below.

Figure 6: Switches on optional DSL modem

5.1.1. DIP switch 1

This switch is to set the modem configuration:

• ON, RT/CPE: DSL modem acts as Remote type / Customer premise equipment side
(slave).
• OFF, OT/CO: DSL modem acts as Office type / Central office side (master).

The setting of this switch must be the opposite as on the modem on the

other side of the communication line.

5.1.2. DIP switch 2

This switch is to set the data transmission mode:

• ON, Fast mode: Direct data transmitting with latency less than 1 ms.
• OFF, Interleave mode: Provides communication protection for up to 250 ms impulse
noise with latency less than 6 ms.

1 Preface
1.1 Introduction

Welcome to SonicExplorer, the software that allows you to perform healthcare monitoring of
your Ultrasonic Flowmeter Series 6 with your personal computer.

SonicExplorer is a software tool which allows easy healthcare monitoring of an ultrasonic

gas flow meters from Elster-Instromet (only series 6). It is recommended to perform a
health care monitoring of your UFM on a regular basis (e.g. monthly). Using SonicExplorer
on a regular basis can detect certain malfunctions before they develop into real problems.
In addition the long term stability of the ultrasonic meter can be monitored.

SonicExplorer allows you to calculate physical properties, e.g. velocity of sound, density,
superior calorific value, ... These calculations are made according to generally accepted
standards: AGA 8 / 10 and ISO 6976.

When there is doubt about the performance and health of the UFM; the ‘Service Pack’
feature of SonicExplorer can be used to collect the most important data of the UFM.
SonicExplorer will put this all in a ‘.zip’ file making it ready to send to Elster for detailed
inspection of the UFM.

3 Connecting to meter
3.1 Setting PC/laptop network connections

To connect to the meter, the local network connection of the PC/laptop needs to match the
connection properties of the meter or to the ethernet network where the meter is connected
too:
• The IP-address should be similar the one of the meter, but may not be the same
(detailed explanation will be stated below).
• The subnet mask should be set exactly the same as the meter.
Both parameters of the meter can be obtained through the display (see document:
22.100.200.002.02/2 latest valid version).

Next a detailed instruction on how the settings of the local network can be checked or
altered is shown.

The example shown is for a laptop with Windows XP as operating system. With

other operating systems their might be some small differences, please contact your
IT department for assistance if necessary.
Most likely you’ll need administrator rights on the PC/laptop for viewing and
changing the local network settings.

1) Go to ‘My Computer’ -> ‘My Network Places’ -> ‘View network connections’ -> right
mouse button click on ‘Local Area Connection’ -> ‘Properties’ (see Figure 2)

2) Go to ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)’ -> ‘properties’ and a menu will be shown with the
network properties (see Figure 3).

Figure 3: local network properties

3) Depending on the situation following settings are recommended:

a. PC/Laptop will be directly connected to the meter:
i. Set the selection to ‘Use the following IP address’.
ii. Set the first 3 tabs of the IP-address the same as the meter. The last
has to be different.
For example: meter’s IP-address is 192.168.1.110. A good choice for
the PC/Laptop will be 192.168.1.100, whereas the last part is different.
iii. The subnet mask must be the same as the meter (frequently used is:
255.255.255.0). Be aware that the after the last point it has to be a
zero, which is normally is the case.
iv. Press ‘OK’ and afterwards close ‘Local Area Connection’, only then the
changes are implemented.
b. PC/Laptop will be connected to the meter through a local ethernet network.
i. Set the selection to ‘Obtain an IP address automatically’.
ii. Press ‘OK’ and afterwards close ‘Local Area Connection’, only then the
changes are implemented.
iii. Hereby we assume that the local ethernet network ensures that the
meter and PC/laptop can communicate. If problems arise please
contact the authorized person of the local ethernet network.

3.2 Verifying connection between PC/Laptop and Meter

It is possible to perform a small test to verify if the connecting between the meter and the
PC/Laptop is working. This can be done through ‘Command prompt’.
Write: ‘ping X’, whereas X stands for the IP-address (see example in Figure 4). When the
connection is correct a reply of the meter will follow, see Figure 4.

3.3 Connecting SonicExplorer

Open the ‘Short-cut’ of SonicExplorer on your desktop. The main screen of SonicExplorer
will be shown. The software version of SonicExplorer is shown during start-up.
First the meter needs to be created in SonicExplorer before it’s possible to connect. All
created meters will be displayed on the main screen. Creating should be done through the
‘Add’ button at the bottom. The ‘Delete’ and ‘Edit’ button should be used for managing
already created meters (see Figure 5).

Figure 5: Managing and connecting meters at main screen

When creating new meter (pressing ‘Add’) a menu will pop-up. Fill this in properly (see
Figure 6). For practice the ‘Simulator’ can be enabled, in this case there will be no
connection to a meter, but SonicExplorer itself will simulate one.

If the IP Address of the meter is not known, it can be obtained through the display

of the meter (see document: 22.100.200.002.02/2 latest valid version).

Ensure the meter and the computer/laptop are connected to the same ethernet
network. Otherwise it will not be possible for SonicExplorer to find the meter.

Figure 6: Create Meter

When a meter is correctly created, connecting SonicExplorer should be done by pressing

‘Connect’ (see Figure 5). When connected the gas velocity and performance are visualised.

It is possible to connect to more than one meter at the same time. Please keep in might that
it is preferred to have the meters need to be on the same network, with a different IP-
address and the same subnet mask.

It is also possible to create a ‘simulator’ meter, see Figure 6. Hereby SonicExplorer should
not be connected to a meter and can be used for training purposes.

the process conditions, see Figure 10. Gas composition can be saved and loaded (when
loading ensure the loaded data is still exactly correct).

Be aware
When having a very low flow rate a warning message will pop-up. A healthcare

check is still possible, however keep in mind that some flow-profile-related criteria
(e.g. Path Velocity Ratios) may exceed normal limit values.
For a reliable Velocity of Sound check the exact gas composition, temperature
and pressure has to be known. If not, this check at the end of the report should
be ignored.

Figure 10: Process Conditions screen

Once all process conditions are filled in, some important gas parameters (compressibility,
Line density and Velocity of Sound) are calculated. To continue the healthcare check, press
‘Run’.

Depending on the application conditions, it is possible that the original test limits are not
sufficient. If needed, they can be set to the application conditions. This is described in
chapter 5.

SonicExplorer will show 5 tabs, all with graphs visualising the measurements of the meter.
On these graphs are also the limits and possible warnings values shown. A green, yellow or
red light on the tab gives the user a quick status of the test status on each of the tabs. You
can click on the specific tab to get more details on the test results.

4.2.2. Tab 1: Velocity and Performance

This tab contains 4 graphs, see Figure 11:

• VoS check: Overall VoS compared to the calculated VoS. This is only relevant if the
exact gas composition, pressure and temperature are known. Otherwise it should be
ignored.
Limits can be altered.
• Performance: Number of approved signals compared to the number of sent out signals.
This decreases with higher gas velocities. When it drops below 20% all pulses
(including the approved) will be dismissed
Limits can be altered.
• VoS Path Ratios: Velocity of Sound of each path compared to the overall Velocity of
Sound.
Limits can be altered.
• Velocity path ratios: Velocity of Gas of each path compared to the overall Velocity of
Gas. With ideal flow profiles the axial paths have a slightly higher ratio (around 4%). Be
aware that a flow profile on a station can be far from ideal.
Limits can be altered.

4.2.3. Tab 2: Flow profile

This Tab contains 3 graphs, see Figure 12:

• Axial/swirl: Velocity of Gas of the axial paths compared to the Velocity of Gas of the
swirl paths (or vice versa). With an ideal flow profile the axial paths are around 4%
higher as the swirl paths.
Limits can be altered.
• Asymmetry: Asymmetry in the flow profile can be detected by comparing:
o Both axial paths
o Both swirl pairs.
Limits can be altered.
• Swirl angle: Swirl in the flow profile can be detected by comparing the swirl paths of
each swirl pair.
Limits can be altered.

4.2.4. Tab 3: SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio)

This Tab contains 3 graphs, see Figure 13:

• Elevated AGC dB: For each transducer the elevated gain of the pulse is shown.
Limits are fixed.
• SNR dB: AGC limit of each transducer compared to the AGC level of that transducer.
This will decrease with higher gas velocities. When the value has dropped to 5
measuring will become more difficult (a warning will pop-up). At a value of 2,
SonicExplorer will give an error.
Limits are fixed.
• AGC ratio: For each path the AGC level of transducer A is compared with the AGC
level of transducer B. Preferably this should be as close to 1 as possible.
Limits are fixed.

4.2.6. Tab 5: Stability

This Tab contains 2 graphs, see Figure 15:

• Peak-Skip: The Peak skip test checks the RTd (Relative Timing difference) between
paths of different length. The RTd value is calculated for all path combinations where
the path lengths are significantly different.
Limits can be altered.
• Turbulence: The turbulence test is used to check the relative stability of each individual
path’s velocity readings. The stability of the individual Velocity of Gas (VoG) of each
path gives an indication of the reliability of that paths VoG. The turbulence will increase
lower flow velocities.
Limits can be altered.

4.4 Generate customer service package

If there are questions about the performance of the meter, a service package should be
generated through SonicExplorer. Herewith SonicExplorer, will perform a healthcare check
and log samples of the transducer (pulse) signals, this will be zipped into a file, which can
be sent to the Elster service department. It is advisable to write in the guiding letter to
Elster, why there are doubts about the meter. All this information provides a very good
basis for Elster for analysing the meter. Once analysed Elster NV/SA will respond and
propose on how to proceed.

Generating a service package should be done as follows:

1) Press ‘Generate customer service package’ in the quick launch menu.

2) SonicExplorer will first start the healthcare check. Please fill in the process conditions,
as described in chapter 4.2.1.

3) Once the health check is completed, SonicExplorer will start taking samples of the
transducer (pulse) signals. As the meters stops measuring during the collection,
SonicExplorer will first ask for a login. This can be obtained at Elster. After the login a
warning will pop-up that the meter will stop measuring. Taking the pulses might take
several minutes.

4) SonicExplorer will put all the data in a zip-file and places it into a new mail with the right
email-address. Please also provide a guiding text, explaining the doubts about the
meter performance.

4.5 Acquire signals

Taking transducer pulse signals can be done, by pressing ‘Acquire signals’ in the action list.
SonicExplorer will ask for username and password. This can be obtained at Elster.

Be aware

SonicExplorer will generate a warning that during the gathering of the pulses the
meter will stop measuring. The output will remain on the last value. Acquiring of
the pulses will take several minutes.

Before proceeding, SonicExplorer will ask the number of pulses that should be taken. It
preferred to set this to a value of 2 or 3. Then the pulses will be taken.

Afterwards the pulses can be displayed by going to ‘Service’ in the quick launch menu, then
open ‘data sources’, select the applicable meter, MPC files and then right click on the
desired collection. The pulses will be opened in a new chart, see Figure 17.

4.6 Configure

By pressing Configure in the quick launch menu it is possible to see and change the
parameters.

Be aware

Standard all parameters are hardware protected and can only be changed when
the security switch is disabled (see the quick start manual, doc code:
22.100.200.000.02/2 latest valid version).
Changes in the parameterfile can have consequences on the performance of the
meter and the validity of the calibration results (if applicable). Therefore Elster
strongly insists to only alter anything after consultation with either Elster-Instromet
or its local agent.

5 Setting healthcare limits

5.1 Changing reference case

When performing a healthcare check, SonicExplorer uses a reference case for setting the
limits. The operating conditions and station lay-out can have a serious impact on the flow
profile in the meter. Therefore it is important to use the correct reference case when
performing a healthcare check.

Changing the ‘Reference Case’ can be done by clicking ‘service’ in the quick launch menu.
Click ‘Data Sources’ followed by ‘Meters’ and then the desired meter. Open the ‘Reference
Cases’ and click on the desired ‘Reference Case’ (wet, dry or site or ..) with the right mouse
button. A list will be opened, see Figure 19:
• Click on ‘Edit’ for checking the limit setting of the ‘Reference case’, also see chapter
5.2.
• By clicking on ‘Make Active’ the ‘Reference Case’ can be enabled. Once enabled it will
turn green.

Figure 19: Choosing reference case

When all the ‘Reference Cases’ are not as desired, it is possible to make a new one, with
live data from the meter. This is described in chapter 5.3.

5.2 Changing limits in reference case

When making a healthcare check and errors pop-up in the report, Elster should be
contacted. When the errors are not caused by a faulty measurement of the meter, but are
triggered by a not ideal flow profile; it’s possible that Elster recommends altering the limits.
Below is briefly described how the limits can be altered, however keep in mind that Elster
strongly recommends to only alter the limits after consultation with Elster!

Go to the desired ‘Reference Case’, as also described in chapter 5.1 and click ‘Edit’.
SonicExplorer will display a screen as Figure 20. On the left there is a table with all
‘Reference Points’. Choose one ‘reference point’ then the test limits are shown the table on
the right. Each ‘Reference Point’ has its own ’Test Limits’ table. Therefore altering the limits
should be done for each ‘Reference Point’ separately.
In the table ‘Test Limits’, the values in light grey cannot be altered. Also the ‘Targets’ cannot
be changed.

Figure 20: Changing limits in reference cases

5.3 Creating a new reference case

When creating a ‘Reference Case’, SonicExplorer will take a logfile with preferably several
gas velocities. At each gas velocity SonicExplorer will analyse the data and create a
‘Reference Point’. A ‘Reference point’ contains the most optimal limit setting for a reliable
healthcare check. Between the ‘reference points’ the limit settings are interpolated.

Creating a ‘Reference Case’ can be typically done during at:

• calibration: with each calibration point as ‘reference point’
• commissioning: with ‘reference points’ starting from slightly below Qmin operating increasing
until slightly above Qmax operating.

4) Look in the right graph for the gas velocity in the meter (also the stability is shown
below the graph). When the correct velocity is reached, it is possible to make a
reference point. This can be done in 2 different ways:
a. With ‘Auto-end Cal. Point’ enabled for a certain number of points.
Press ‘Cal. Point Start’; SonicExplorer will ask for some process conditions, see
chapter 4.2.1. Meanwhile SonicExplorer will start making a ‘Reference point’ for
the number of point filled in at ‘Auto-end Cal. Point’. When all points are taken,
the new reference point will automatically be completed on the left table.
b. With ‘Auto-end Cal. Point’ disabled.
Press ‘Cal. Point Start’; SonicExplorer will ask for some process conditions, see
chapter 4.2.1. Meanwhile SonicExplorer will start making a ‘Reference point’.
SonicExplorer will only stop creating the ‘Reference point’ when ‘Cal. Point
End’ is pressed. Then the new ‘reference point’ will be completed on the left
table.

If the flow is not very stable, SonicExplorer will generate a warning.

5) ‘Reference n points’ should be taken for different gas velocities:

a. During an actual calibration, for each calibration point.
b. At commissioning, ‘reference points’ starting from slightly below Qmin operating
increasing until slightly above Qmax operating.
All ‘reference points’ will be shown in the right table. A small example is shown in
Figure 23.

Figure 23: Example ‘reference points’ of ‘reference case’

6) When all ‘Reference points’ are taken, ‘End Data Collection’ should be pressed. Sonic
Explorer will stop logging the data. Then click ‘Create Ref. Case’. Sonic Explorer will
pop-up a menu for naming the ‘reference case’, please fill in properly.

7) SonicExplorer will create the most suitable limits for the current application, this can be
seen as described in chapter 5.2, however it is highly recommended not to alter these.
Also make sure this ‘Reference case’ is used when making a health care check, see
chapter 5.1.
