THE MEDIA AND

INFORMATION
LITERATE FILIPINO
LESSON 10
INTRODUCTION
➢ In all shapes and forms, knowledge is produced and shared.
Every day, there is more media and information available than
ever before, especially in this rising era of data and information
explosion. Our ability to handle information and misinformation
will be put to the test as we develop our media and information
literacy as individuals. It involves a certain amount of deference
for those who ask for it. Respect for information needs means
that we give everyone the freedom to express themselves freely
without bias or judgment. MIL educates us to use media and
information in an ethical, effective, and efficient way.
TRUE OR FALSE
1. MIL can be self-taught.
2. For a media and literate individual, if it
feels right, it will be considered as right.
3. Being able to master using different
kinds of media is enough to be called a
media and information literate individual.
4. A media and information literate
individual can build a media and
information literate society.
CASE STUDY

 In February 2014, the first of a two part of report

about an alleged “mysterious flesh eating” disease

was aired on a late-night newscast of a major TV network. The report dealt with

two cases of the said diseases that were “slowly spreading” in the province of

Pangasinan. According to the report, doctors could not determine the case of the

patients’ ailments. Adding more “mystery” to the report, the news anchor

concluded the first part with questions that connected the disease to a certain

property.
CASE STUDY

 After the airing of the report, Netizens began

sharing on social media pictures of skin diseases they

thought were related to the issue. Some even connected the report to a “prophecy”

in 2013 of self-proclaimed Indian prophet, who said that a flesh-eating disease will

originate from Pangasinan and will spread around the world. This prophet is said

to have predicted that a typhoon would devastate Samar and Leyte— that seemed

to have been validated by the destruction of Typhoon Yolanda in November 2013.

With this, panic over the new “prophecy” immediately spread.

CASE STUDY

 However, the Department of Health (DOH)

dismissed the accuracy of the network’s report and

said that it was a hoax. They said that the patients featured in the report did not

have a mysterious disease — one had psoriasis, while the other had leprosy.

because of this disclaimer, part two of the report was never aired.

 As erratum, the network immediately issued a public apology for the

“unintended fear and panic” the report had caused.
 Media and information literacy empowers people to think
critically about information and use of digital tools. It helps
people make informed choices about how they participate
in peace building, equality, freedom of expression,
dialogue, access to information, and sustainable
development.

skill when accessing the Internet, which can lead to sharing messages or files
that are deemed obscene and libelous

➢ It can entice people to download and share copyrighted materials, such as

music and movies, whether deliberately or unintentionally.

➢ Missent messages through text or e-mail might strain relationships , whether

personal or work related.

➢ It can distract people from doing more important tasks because of too much
time spent watching shows or updating social media accounts, which can be
a form of addiction.
