My role in the salon was internal. I was the front desk receptionist for 20 hours a week. My
duties included checking people in and out of the salon, washing and folding the laundry,
answering the phone, and scheduling to book clients. I worked at this job for a little over a
year during the coronavirus spread.
2) Describe how the human resources of the organization influenced the situation.
The human resources of the organization did not exist. In the hair salon industry, there is no
human resources department. Since salons are typically smaller companies, there is no HR
like at big corporations. The owner of the salon has to be in charge of all things human
resources. Some of the responsibilities include onboarding, benefits, and payroll.
When Covid happened, there were no human resources to step in and take care of the
employees. Typically, human resources would step in when something this drastic occurs. In
the textbook, we learn that “The human resource frames evolved from the early work of
pioneers like Mary Parker Follett (1918) and Elton Mayo (1933,1945), who questioned a
deeply held managerial assumption that employees had no right beyond a paycheck, and their
1
duty was to work hard and follow orders” (Bolman & Deal, 2021, p.122). The whole purpose
of human resources is to make sure employees are taken care of.
3) Recommend how you would use the human resources for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.
In other companies, human resources is utilized for the company employees. Since the salon
industry typically does not utilize human resources it was challenging for employees during
Covid. Human resources are important to protect and look after employees. In the textbook,
we learn “Upper Management encourages everyone to reach out to them with their concern
anytime, and they take your feedback seriously!” (Bolman & Deal, 2021, p.140) Human
resources are necessary for employees to go to for anything, especially physical and mental
support.
I would have used human resources differently by involving it more. As the owner of the
salon, I would have found more ways to give employees more benefits. Some salons will
give stylists health insurance checks and a retirement percentage. Specifically, with the virus,
I would have supported my employees more. Making sure they were comfortable coming to
work, giving them time off if they were sick, and providing more ways for employees to stay
safe while working.
4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.
Based on what I now know, I think having human resources would be beneficial to the salon
industry. During the pandemic, many of the employees were unhappy with how things were
being run. Human resources would have been helpful to help keep the employees safe,
healthy, and happy.
However, although human resources are important, I think that the way employees are
treated is of most importance. In the textbook, we learn that “Despite decades of evidence
showing that better human resources management is good for both people and organizations,
the quality of work life has not been getting much better in American organizations”
(Bolman & Deal, 2021, p.119). This is because companies have to treat their employees
well.
Work can take a toll on people both physically and mentally. For an employee to want to stay
with a company, it is important that they feel supported. An example is “Ultimate’s benefits
include company-paid health care, paid time off, flexible work arrangements, paid leave for
new parents, tuition reimbursement, subsidized child care, wellness initiatives, and many
more (Bolman & Deal, 2021, p.140). These benefits make it worth it for Ultimate’s
employees to do their best work and stay with the company.
