INFORMATION SHEET 3

MODULE 2
LESSON 1: Performing Computer Operations
1.2 Elements of Computer

A computer is an electronic device that performs tasks based on instructions given by the user. The computer system
works starting with the data entered by the user, then the computer processes the data and produces the output. A computer system
is composed of 3 elements that will make a computer user, namely peopleware, hardware, and software.

ELEMENTS OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM

PEOPLEWARE HARDWARE SOFTWARE

PEOPLEWARE-the most important part of, and beneficiaries of a computer and communication system.

HARDWARE- the tangible or physical part that performs the various tasks of the computer.
COMPONENTS OF COMPUTER HARDWARE

INPUT DEVICES PROCESSING OUTPUT DEVICES

Input devices – used to enter data such as text, images or pictures, audio or sounds, and video.
Examples of Input Devices:

Illustrations Input Devices

Keyboard - an input device used to enter characters and functions into the computer system by
pressing buttons, or keys. It is the primary device used to enter text.

Mouse - input device used to point and select objects on the computer monitor.

Scanner - use to capture a source document and converts printed data or images into an
electronic data format.

Web Camera - an input device most often used to enable people to see each other when
communicating over the internet, or for recording video blogs, or other videos.

Joystick - an input device that is often used to control video games, and usually has one or more
pushbuttons whose state can also be read by the computer.

Microphone - used to input sound that is then stored in a digital form. It is used for various
applications such as adding sound to a multimedia presentation or for mixing music.

Output Devices – use to display and alter data into the computer.
Examples of Output Devices:

Illustrations Output Devices

Monitor - an electronic visual computer display that includes a screen, circuitry, and the case in
which that circuitry is enclosed.

Printer - The printer is a device used to print texts and pictures.

Speaker/Headset - an output hardware device that produces sound.

Projector - an output device that projects an image onto a large surface, such as a white screen
or wall.
Processing - This is responsible for all primary functions of data management. The processor requires components that support it
with the management of data to operate.
Illustrations Output Devices

Motherboard / Mainboard / System Board – This is the main circuit board of a computer.
It contains all the circuits and components that run the computer.

CPU (Central Processing Unit) - The processor is the main “brain” or “heart” of a
computer system. It performs all the needed instructions and calculations and manages the
information flow through a computer.
RAM (Random Access Memory) - RAM is volatile, meaning it holds data only when the
power is on. When the power is off, RAM's contents are lost.

Video Card/GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) - a display card, graphics card, display
adapter, or graphics adapter- is an expansion card that generates a feed of output images to a
display device (such as a computer monitor).
