KEY TERMS

FIRST AID. is the first and immediate assistance given to any person suffering
from either a minor or serious illness or injury, with care provided to
preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or to promote
recovery.

CPR. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique useful in

many emergencies, including a heart attack or near drowning, in which
someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped. The American Heart
Association recommends that everyone — untrained bystanders and
medical personnel alike — begin CPR with chest compressions.

BANDAGE. a strip of material used to bind a wound or to protect an injured

part of the body.

NITRILE. is a synthetic rubber compound that is commonly used as a

disposable glove material. Nitrile has been around for a while, but
only recently it's become more affordable, which explains why it's
gaining popularity throughout medical, food and cleaning
industries.

LIDOCAINE. is a local anesthetic (numbing medication). It works by blocking

nerve signals in your body. Lidocaine topical (for use on
the skin) is used to reduce pain or discomfort caused by
skin irritations such as sunburn, insect bites, poison ivy,
poison oak, poison sumac, and minor cuts, scratches, or
burns.

NAUSEA. is the sensation of an urge to vomit. Nausea can be acute and

short-lived, or it can be prolonged. When prolonged, it is a
debilitating symptom. Nausea (and vomiting) can be psychological
or physical in origin.

SEIZURE is a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain. It can

cause changes in your behavior, movements or feelings, and in
levels of consciousness. If you have two or more seizures or a
tendency to have recurrent seizures, you have epilepsy.

LEARNING PLAN
Summary

Defining first aid is not as straightforward as it would seem. "First aid" is a catch-all term
which refers to two distinct medical needs.

1. Exactly that is emergency initial aid — the first response to a life-threatening (or limb-
threatening) medical emergency, either an infection or an accident. It is also called
first responder preparation. In this scenario more advanced medical treatment may
come after first aid. This form of first aid involves CPR, blocking an obstruction in the
airways, contributing to anaphylactic shock, splinting a broken bone and extreme
management of bleeding.

2. No emergency first aid is the care for basic medical conditions that we start
ourselves. After the initial report we may or may not opt for more specialized medical
treatment. This involves using over-the-counter remedies for mild discomfort or
allergy, washing and bandaging wounds or abrasions, as well as mild prevention of
bleeding.

Training is special for each. Organizations like the American Red Cross, the Public
Safety Committee, and the American Heart Association offer first aid courses for disaster
relief. Non-emergency first aid programs are very few. It is the type of thing that we hear
from mom or the internet.

It is crucial to know how and where to call assistance and get the most out of
emergency first aid. 911 is the default option, but misunderstandings regarding calling
911 can make it tougher than planned. There are vast sources of resources available to
assist with non-emergency first aid cases — like the internet or contacting a physician's
office.

We are presenting information on all first aid forms, without really discerning
between the two. It is believed that 911 would be called in a medical emergency during a
bona fide one. However, just in case step-by - step guidelines for CPR and other medical
procedures remain here.
COURSE POST-ASSESSMENT

This unit will provide the use of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control
Point (HACCP) system as a powerful tool for ensuring food safety and preventing
food borne disease. Prepared jointly by WHO and the Industry Council for
Development, this module aims to encourage more widespread and consistent
use of HACCP as the international reference system and universally accepted
method for food safety assurance. With this goal in mind, it draws together all the
practical and technical information needed to understand the unique advantages
of this system and apply its principles in practice, whether within the food industry
or at government level.
