CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

Spirituality is a fundamental aspect of human life that plays a crucial role in

promoting overall well-being and health. Research has shown that spirituality can

have a positive impact on various aspects of life, including mental health,

relationships, and personal growth.

Spirituality has also been linked to better relationships, with research

showing that individuals who are more spiritual tend to have more fulfilling and

satisfying relationships with others. Spiritual practices such as meditation and

prayer have been found to promote empathy, compassion, and forgiveness,

which are important qualities for building strong and healthy relationships.

Furthermore, spirituality can promote personal growth and development by

providing individuals with a sense of purpose, meaning, and direction in life. It

can also help individuals to cope with difficult life events such as illness, loss, and

trauma by providing them with a sense of comfort, hope, and resilience.

Overall, research suggests that spirituality is an essential aspect of human

life that can promote overall well-being and health. It is important for individuals

to explore and cultivate their spirituality in ways that are meaningful and authentic

to them.

The spiritual aspect of life refers to our connection with a higher power, the

universe, or the divine. It is often a personal and individual experience, and can
encompass beliefs, values, practices, and experiences that go beyond the

material world. It can involve yoga, meditation, prayer, rituals and others spiritual

practices. People may explore their spiritual aspects through organized religions,

spiritual communities, and individual exploration. According to Philippines Social

Science Journal (2021) These studies have established the spiritual well-being of

Filipino students. Though Filipino youth’s spiritual well-being has been subjected

to test due to life’s demands and challenges, it continues to grow and survive due

to the support of institutions and the environment that provide venues for public

ritual and private reflections (Lituañas, 2007). But little has been said about the

spiritual, religious, and existential well-being of Junior High School Students.

Different aspects may contribute to and influence how people appraise the

many facets of their lives, ranging from individual characteristics that distinguish

between happy and unhappy personalities, to values people consider important

and worth pursuing in life or the fulfillment of social needs (Balzarotti et al., 2016;

Diener et al., 2018; Schwartz and Sortheix, 2018).

According to (PMC pubmed Central) Given the complexity of religiosity

and spirituality constructs, it turns out to be critical to specify how these concepts

have been conceptualized in literature. In line with Pargament (1997), religiosity

and spirituality are intended in terms of the individual’s values, beliefs, behaviors,

and identity, which may focus on either the sacred or the functional aspects of

religion.

The important point is that the purpose of teaching along with spirituality is

to educate people who, in addition to logic and reason, have a deep and
productive feel. Spiritual teaching is a kind of teaching that seeks to attain higher

levels of awareness and meaningfulness of life, which, regardless of the content

of education, is the same path of development of ultimate goals that lead spiritual

awakening. Acquiring knowledge about this part of the professors’ abilities

reveals the status and allows planning for promotion. Second, it is in line with the

ultimate goals of education, in which the role of professors to convey spiritual

concepts is very important. Considering the importance of the issue and the

spiritual teaching, efficiencies, based on the research, no study was found to

address the factors affecting spiritual teaching. Therefore, this study is designed

to explain the factors affecting the transfer of spiritual concepts during teaching

process (PMC pubmed Central)

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the conceptual literature and related studies about

the status of spiritual aspect of life in Grade-10 Newton at Alalum National High

School.

Related Literature

According to (PabMED) the spiritual aspect of life has been recognized as

an integral part of human existence since ancient times. Over the years, scholars

from different fields of study have conducted extensive research on the concept

of spirituality, its definition, and its role in human well-being.

The concept of spirituality has been a significant aspect of human life and

culture for centuries. It can be defined as a sense of connection to a higher

power or a sense of purpose that goes beyond the material world. Spiritual

beliefs are often shaped by religious affiliations, but can also be shaped by

personal experiences, such as meditation and prayer. Many studies have shown

that spirituality can provide physical, psychological, and social benefits to those

who practice it.

Cultivating the spirit this groundbreaking work is based on a five-year

study of how students change during the junior high school years and the role
high school plays in facilitating the development of their spiritual qualities.

Students, the authors argue, grapple with the big questions in life: Who am I?

What are my values? Do I have a mission in life? Why am I in junior high school?

What kind of person do I want to be? What sort of world do I want to help to

create? Their answers to these questions help determine their academic and

career choices and are tied to the development of personal qualities such as

empathy, caring, and social responsibility. The study finds that, while students’

religious engagement declines during high school, at the same time they become

substantially more caring, tolerant, connected with others, and actively engaged

in a spiritual quest.

Spiritual growth also enhances academic performance, leadership

development, and satisfaction with high school. The study provides strong

evidence pointing to specific experiences during high school that can contribute

to students’ spiritual growth. The need for spiritual development in junior high

school is apparent. Two-thirds of the students in the study express a strong

interest in spiritual matters, well over half report that their professors never

encourage discussions of religious or spiritual matters, and about the same

proportion report that professors never provide opportunities to discuss the

purpose and meaning of life.

Cultivating the spirit aims to raise the awareness of academic

administrators, faculty, and the public at large to the vital role that spirituality

plays in student learning and development. Throughout the book, the authors

identify strategies for enhancing students’ development and encourage the

academy to give greater priority to the spiritual aspects of students’ educational

and personal development.

Given the complexity of religiosity and spirituality constructs, it turns out to be

critical to specify how these concepts have been conceptualized in literature. In

line with Pargament (1997), religiosity and spirituality are intended in terms of the

individual’s values, beliefs, behaviors, and identity, which may focus on either the

sacred or the functional aspects of religion.

Spirituality in education

must first be in harmony with Islamic culture because the Islamic society is based

on belief in Allah Almighty. It is believed that all things are planned for him.[12]

Second, it is in line with the ultimate goals of education, in which the role of

professors to convey spiritual concepts is very important.[13] Considering the

importance of the issue and the spiritual teaching deficiencies, based on the

researches, no study was found to address the factors affecting spiritual

teaching. Therefore, this study is designed to explain the factors affecting the

transfer of spiritual concepts during teaching process.

According to this study investigated the impact of the Christians in highs

chool educational environment, both academic and nonacademic, on student

spirituality. Nine hundred fifty-three self-reported surveys, representing in

Philippines and universities, were used. The typical respondent was female,

Caucasian, and a resident upperclassman. For the purposes of this exploratory

study, spirituality was operationally defined as “spiritual formation,” referring to

one’s growth towards spiritual maturity, which is reflected in one’s relationships

with God, self, and others. Findings reveal interesting trends about factors

associated with spirituality on campus, and relate student perceptions of

spirituality and the high school experience. Results indicate that students

perceived many factors of their high school experience as positive. In particular,

the nonacademic aspects of high school life were perceived to be more influential

on spiritual formation than the academic. For example, students rated their peer

relationships as being most significant to their spiritual growth. Results also

illustrate demographic differences in perceptions of the various aspects of the

high school experience. Practical applications suggest assessing the existing

range of high school academic and nonacademic offerings and training for faculty

development in class assessments. Other applications include providing

programs for students experiencing emotional crises or pain. Recommendations

for further research include studying other factors such as sports, counseling

services, church involvement, family support, maturation factors, and the impact

of computers. Research may also benefit from focusing on certain survey items
more specifically, such as various kinds of peer relationships and cultural

diversity.

According to Lang (2007) searching for spirituality in higher education

brings together eclectic points of view on spirituality, drawing upon various

theoretical perspectives to frame a discussion of spirituality in higher education.

Following a comprehensive review of the current literature on spirituality,

chapters examine the relationship between religion and spirituality and explore

related legal issues. Subsequent theory chapters make no unified claims about

the basis of spirituality, reflecting the speculative nature of an ethereal subject.

The final section contains rich examples that explore ways to integrate spirituality

in several academic disciplines as well as in student affairs. In its entirety, the

book encompasses a comprehensive review of the salient issues related to

spirituality in higher education. The volume will be useful in courses on religion,

nursing, business, and the humanities.

Related Studies

In this study, historically the term “spiritual formation” was used to denote

the training of men and women for full time church ministry (Sheldrake 2005,

309). The content of the curriculum was academic training on scripture, theology,

philosophy and liturgy. It also involved training in the spiritual disciplines

especially in a disciplined prayer life. However, this is not the spiritual formation

referred to in contemporary discussion of the subject.

Contemporary spiritual formation is difficult to study. It is a multidisciplinary

subject involving psychology, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, education and

theology. A review of the literature will show a large variety of definitions and

practices associated with the subject. The language used, different philosophies

and worldviews are different to different authors. Various authors differ in their

approach to theology, anthropology and psychology. Others struggle between

practice and theory. The fundamental commonality among the different authors is

that concept of spiritual formation is about spiritual growth. However, their

different basis of approach has lead to fundamental differences in their definitions

and outworking of their concept of spiritual formation.

First, some authors used the word Christian spiritual formation to

differentiate it from spiritual formation that occurs in different worldviews and

religious traditions. In this review, I shall limit myself to Christian authors. Second,

many authors equate spiritual formation to spiritual growth in persons. However,

an argument can be made that spiritual formation also occurs to communities.

This will be taken into consideration in the review. Third, some authors fail to

differentiate spiritual formation from discipleship or use these words

interchangeably. Others use words like faith formation, spiritual transformation,

Christian formation, and spiritual growth. Finally, there are not many studies done

to establish an exegetical foundation for spiritual formation as currently practiced

in evangelicalism. The word “spiritual formation” does not appear in the Bible.

Most authors just skim around the theological aspects and focus on the practice.

In this studies review of spiritual formation, I will examine the subject from

five different approaches. I am using the word “approach’ as a metaphor because

there are no single distinctive to categorise the different writings and often the

areas covered by the authors overlap. Recognising this, nevertheless it will offer

a way to evaluate the previous work done on this subject, and to also to furnish a

backdrop to the theses to be developed in this dissertation.

Synthesis

The comparison of related studies” findings is provided in this section

along with the similarities and differences.

The studies of Peter Lang (2007) Sheldrake (2004) , have some

similarities to the present studies

about the status and improvement of spiritual aspect of life. In this study,

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study employed descriptive research design to explore and describe

the status of spiritual aspects in the life of Grade 10 Newton students. The

quantitative research design was used as it helps the researchers gather the

necessary data for the study. The study used surveys to collect the data. In order

to accomplish it, the researchers developed a survey with a set of questions,

which were distributed to the respondents.

Subject of the Study

The subjects of this study were the Grade 10 Newton students at Alalum

National High School. The respondents have been chosen as they can provide

an in-depth and detailed information on the topic being studied. The participants'

knowledge, life-experience, and particular characteristics were also considered.

From that, 24 students answered the survey questionnaire, and they are

expected to provide the necessary information needed in the study.

Data Gathering Tools

In this study, a survey was utilized as the primary data gathering

instrument. The survey instrument consisted of a series of questions designed to

gather information about the participants' attitudes and experiences related to the

research topic. The survey was developed based on a thorough review of

existing literature. It aimed to collect both quantitative data, allowing for a

comprehensive understanding of the research problem.

Data Gathering Procedure

A target population was identified based on the research objectives and

criteria. The respondents were given a specified period to complete the survey.

They were encouraged to respond at their convenience and reminded about the

importance of their contribution. The survey was administered face-to-face using

a questionnaire tool. During the survey administration period, the responses were

collected keep with utmost confidentiality. Quantitative data obtained from Likert-

scale questions were analyzed using descriptive statistics, such as means,

frequencies, and standard deviations.

Throughout the data gathering process, ethical considerations were

carefully addressed. Participants' informed consent was obtained before their

participation, ensuring that they were aware of the purpose of the study, their

rights, and the potential risks and benefits. Confidentiality and anonymity were

maintained throughout the study by removing any identifying information from the

collected data. By following this data gathering procedure, the study aimed to

collect reliable and valid data that would contribute to the research objectives and

provide insights into the research topic.

Statistical Treatment

The collected data from the survey were subjected to various statistical

treatments to analyze and interpret the findings. The following statistical

procedure was applied:

Frequency - statistical measure that indicates the rate at which something

occurs or is repeated over a particular period of time or in a given sample.

Percentage-bigyan ng definition

Weighted Mean- bigyan ng definition

Verbal Interpretation:

Scale Range Verbal Interpretation

4 3.41-4.00 Always/ Highly Experienced

3 2.61-3.40 Sometimes/Sometimes Experienced

2 1.80-2.60 Rarely/ Experienced

1 1.00-1.79 Never/Not Experienced

By applying this statistical treatment, the study aimed to provide a

comprehensive analysis of the survey data, uncover meaningful insights, and

answer the research questions. These statistical procedures allowed for the

exploration of relationships, identification of significant differences, and

presentation of quantitative findings.
