This course gives students an introduction to the economy including the topics of price
determination, market structure and resource allocation, the behaviour of consumers
and firms, and market intervention by government. Some of the economic issues
addressed may include agricultural price supports, rent control, trade policy,
environmental regulation, price discrimination, and taxation.

Patrick Martin joined the Department of Economics in 1999. He received a B.A. in
Economics from the University of California at Irvine (1976), an M.A. in Economics from
Cornell University (1986) and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Guelph
(2001).

Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
1. Describe basic principles of microeconomics including demand and supply, utility
and consumer choice, production and costs, market structure, market failures
and government intervention, and factor markets;
2. Demonstrate and discuss how basic economic models work;

3. Analyze specific markets, including goods and services, housing, and labour
markets;
4. Recognize the successes and failures of government intervention in the market;
5. Explain the role of public policies, such as competition policy, environmental
policy, and trade policy;
6. Apply mathematical concepts and tools, such as computing the slope of a line or
graphing the relationship between variables, to explain basic economic models
and the interaction between economic variables;
7. Apply the microeconomic principles to critically examine everyday economic
events;
8. Apply basic problem-solving techniques used in microeconomics, including
techniques to calculate elasticity, determine the market equilibrium, and compute
total, marginal, and average cost and product; and
9. Use graphical analysis to demonstrate and interpret various economic models,
including the demand and supply model, market equilibrium determination, and
the impact of government regulation on the economy.

Assessment
The grade determination for this course is indicated in the following tables. Please note
carefully how the two Course Assessment Schemes differ. Your final mark will be the
higher of the two calculations. Note that MyEconLab is a required course component.
You still need to purchase it as it is necessary for submission of your PEAR assignment.

Assessment Descriptions
A brief description of each assessment is provided below. Select Content on the navbar
to locate Assessments in the table of contents panel to review further details of each
assessment. Due dates can be found under the Schedule heading of this outline.
PEAR Assignment
The PEAR Assignment is a four-step process requiring you to submit a draft of your
essay to the Turnitin Dropbox, to Pearson Tutor Services,and then to PEAR for peer
evaluation. There are 3 submissions in total. In addition, students successfully

submitting to PEAR by the deadline receive up to 5 other student submissions to
review. These 5 reviews are submitted to PEAR as well. Details about resources
available, assessment details, and submission instructions can be found by clicking on
Contents in the navigation bar on your course homepage, selecting Assessments from
the left-hand menu, and then selecting the PEAR Assignment. There is also a brief
section on submitting the PEAR assignment further down in this course outline. The
PEAR assignment requires MyEconLab to submit to Pearson Tutor Services.
If you have taken this course before and submitted your PEAR assignment to Turnitin
you MUST edit it (you can use the same ideas, but it must be substantially rewritten)
and turn it in to Pearson Tutor Services to get comments. Your Turnitin score should be
25 or less or else you will need to revise it further. If you fail to substantially revise your
PEAR assignment from when you took the class before your Turnitin score will be quite
high, if not 100%, and your mark will suffer accordingly.
MyEconLab Quizzes
There are 12 graded quizzes during the semester; your lowest two quiz marks will be
dropped. You can access the quizzes through using the Pearson Widget on the course
homepage. In addition, there are 2 non-graded quizzes that allow you to review the
mathematics used in the course.
The 12 graded MyEconLab quizzes cover the following chapter readings (see individual
Units for exact chapter readings). Typically, there are NO extensions on the quizzes,
given you have up to 3 weeks to complete them. I will put the weight of missed quizzes
(up to a maximum of 4) onto the final exam. Readings covered in Chapters 16 and 17
are covered in non-graded MyEconLab quizzes.
Note that the Chapters refer to the CURRENT edition of the textbook – if you are using
an older edition you should check to see the content of the current edition (see the
publisher’s website) so you are prepared for the quizzes.

Tests
There will be 5 online tests, the first of which is for practice and as such will be
ungraded. Your grade will be determined by taking your best 3 of the remaining 4 tests.
You will be able to access the tests by clicking on the Tests link from the Tools
dropdown menu. Test coverage is as follows; Note that the Chapters refer to the
CURRENT edition of the textbook – if you are using an older edition you should check
to see the content of the current edition (see the publisher’s website) so you are
prepared for the quizzes. In particular, the most recent edition of the textbook has
different chapter content and numbering starting with Chapter 10 than some of the more
recent editions.
• Test 1 covers Chapters 1, 2, and 3 in Parkin and Bade (14 questions each
chapter)
• Test 2 covers Chapters 4 and 5 in Parkin and Bade (21 questions each chapter)
• Test 3 covers Chapters 6, 7, 8, and 9 in Parkin and Bade (10 or 11 questions
each chapter)
• Test 4 covers Chapters 10 and 11 in Parkin and Bade (21 questions each
chapter)
• Test 5 covers Chapters 12, 13, and 14 in Parkin and Bade (14 questions each
chapter)
Reading in Chapters 15, 16 and 17 are NOT covered in the timed tests but are covered
on the final exam. Use the MyEconLab quizzes (graded and non-graded) for these
chapters as well as the study plan in MyEconLab.
All tests are 60 minutes. Each student gets a random selection of questions from the
test bank with 1/3 of the questions from each of three levels of difficulty. Once the
test period is over you can check to see which questions you answered incorrectly.
This course requires the use of Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor (webcam)
to proctor your tests within CourseLink. Use of Lockdown Browser with a webcam has
been implemented to maintain the academic integrity of the tests. You must download
and install LockDown Browser and Monitor to complete the practice test and tests.
Important: Tests open Mondays at 12:01 am ET and extend through Thursdays at
11:59 pm ET, However, there is a 3-day grace period so you can submit up until
Sunday nights at 11:59pm ET.
You can ONLY get an extension on the test if you let me know no later than Thursday
5pm (the day the test is due), that you are ill, or want me to consider a compassionate
reason for an extension. Once the grace period begins, NO further extensions are
possible.
Once the grace period starts you are expected to submit the test before the end of the
grace period. You do not have to request to write during the grace period as all students
are automatically given the extended time for submission

with some weekend coverage (Saturdays 10:00 am ET to 4:00 pm ET and
Sundays 12:00 pm ET to 6:00 pm ET).
• If you take you test outside these hours and experience any difficulties be aware
you will NOT have access to CourseLink Support regarding any problems you
might experience – including those about the Respondus system.
• It is HIGHLY recommended you start and complete the tests within the time
frame that CourseLink Support Hours. You should call CourseLink Support at

• If all support individuals are busy and you get directed to voicemail, leave your
name, phone number, the course number, and a brief description of the problem.
They will get back to you as soon as possible.
Similar to a sit-down test where you must arrive prior to the start of the test, it is highly
recommended that you enter the online test environment in Respondus at least 20-30
minutes before the end of the available window to allow enough time for you to
complete the Respondus Startup Sequence and ensure that you have the full 60
minutes for the test.

the online tests. The purpose of the practice test is to ensure that Respondus

Final Exam
The final exam will be multiple choice and will cover all the course readings. The
questions will be taken from the Parkin and Bade textbook and will cover the Adomait
and Maranta textbook to the extent that concepts and terminology appear on both
texts.
Important:
The final exam will be delivered online via the Quizzes tool. The exam is 2 hours in
length and will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2022
To accommodate students who may be located in various time zones, the exam will be
available beginning at 8:30 am until 9:30 am Eastern Time (ET). You can enter the
exam at any point during this window of time but will only have 2 hours to complete it

from when you start writing. For example, if you start writing the exam by 9:00 am, you
will have until 11:00 am to complete it. After 9:30 am ET you will no longer be able to
enter the exam environment.
If you are residing in a country where your local time zone would require you to start
before 7am, or complete the exam after 11pm, please contact your instructor to try and
find an alternative time to write.

• Online Office Hours: The instructor or TA will typically plan two 60-minute time
periods 2 days a week (or 1 120 minute session where they will be available to
answer questions using Zoom.
Office hours will be held early in the week of the 5 timed tests. If you have a
complex question you would like to discuss with your instructor, you may book a
virtual meeting or arrange a phone conversation.
Meetings will depend on the availability of you and the instructor, and are booked
on a first come first served basis. The TA or instructor will answer questions
Monday through Friday posted to the Ask Your Instructor Discussion group
throughout the semester.
Netiquette Expectations
For distance education courses, the course website is considered the classroom and
the same protections, expectations, guidelines, and regulations used in face-to-face
settings apply, plus other policies and considerations that come into play specifically
because these courses are online.
Inappropriate online behaviour will not be tolerated. Examples of inappropriate online
behaviour include:
• Posting inflammatory messages about your instructor or fellow students;
• Using obscene or offensive language online;
• Copying or presenting someone else's work as your own;
• Adapting information from the Internet without using proper citations or
references;
• Buying or selling term papers or assignments;
• Posting or selling course materials to course notes websites;
• Having someone else complete your quiz or completing a quiz for/with another
student;
• Stating false claims about lost quiz answers or other assignment submissions;
• Threatening or harassing a student or instructor online;
• Discriminating against fellow students, instructors, and/or TAs;
• Using the course website to promote profit-driven products or services;
• Attempting to compromise the security or functionality of the learning
management system;
• Sharing your username and password; and
• Recording lectures without the permission of the instructor.

The PEAR Assignment submission is a three-step process. A more detailed overview of
this assignment can be found on the course website by selecting Content from the
navbar, then selecting Assessments from the left-hand menu, and choosing PEAR
Assignment.
Note: When submitting your assignments using the Turnitin Dropbox tool and the
PEAR Submission link, do not leave the page until your assignment has been
successfully uploaded. To verify that your submission was complete, you can view the
submission for you to confirm that you successfully uploaded the correct files. The
system will also email you a receipt; save this email receipt as poof of submission.
Carefully read the section on PEAR on the Assessments page in CourseLink for more
details.
Be sure to keep a back-up copy of all of your assignments in the event that they are lost
in transition. To avoid any last-minute computer problems, your instructor strongly
recommends you save your assignments to a cloud-based file storage (e.g., Google
Docs), so that should something happen to your computer, the assignment could still be
submitted (or resubmitted) by the assignment deadliness.
It is your responsibility to submit your assignments on time as specified on the
Schedule. Be sure to check the technical requirements, that you have a supported
browser, and that you have reliable Internet access. Remember that technical
difficulties are not an excuse to turn in your assignment late. Don’t wait until the
last minute as you may get behind in your work.

Late Policy
If you choose to submit your individual assignments to Dropbox and PEAR tools late,
you will not be assigned other student’s papers for review, in this case you will receive a
zero on the PEAR assignment. There are no make-up quizzes or tests. Quizzes are
open for three weeks before their due date (except for the first couple quizzes are the
beginning of the semester. Tests are open for one full week. You should consider that
Tests which open at midnight on a Sunday should be completed by Thursday at
midnight. The Tests remain open through Sunday at midnight and can be submitted
until then without penalty. If you inform me that you are ill in the last three days the Test
is open, or there is another reason you do not take the test, it may NOT be extended as
you should have completed the test in the first four days it was open.
Extensions will be considered for medical reasons or other extenuating circumstances.
If you require an extension, discuss this with the instructor as soon as possible and well
before the due date. Barring exceptional circumstances, extensions will not be granted
once the due date has passed. These rules are not designed to be arbitrary, nor are
they inflexible. They are designed to keep you organized, to ensure that all students

When accommodations are needed, the student is required to first register with Student
Accessibility Services (SAS). Documentation to substantiate the existence of a disability
is required; however, interim accommodations may be possible while that process is
underway.
Accommodations are available for both permanent and temporary disabilities. It should
be noted that common illnesses such as a cold or the flu do not constitute a disability.
Use of the SAS Exam Centre requires students to make a booking at least 14 days in
advance, and no later than November 1 (fall), March 1 (winter) or July 1 (summer).
Similarly, new or changed accommodations for online quizzes, tests and exams must
be approved at least a week ahead of time.

Open Learning Program Students:
If you are an Open Learning program student who requires academic accommodation,

Recording of Materials
Presentations which are made in relation to course work—including lectures—cannot be
recorded or copied without the permission of the presenter, whether the instructor, a
classmate or guest lecturer. Material recorded with permission is restricted to use for
that course unless further permission is granted.

Illness
Medical notes will not normally be required for singular instances of academic
