History of the Organization: Gebrher Health and Social Development Charity Organization is a
Board-led not-for-profit organization established in May 2021. It aims to provide healthcare and
social services to poor Ethiopians. Gebrher is legally registered by Agency for Civil Society
Organizations of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in accordance with the Civil
Society Organizations Proclamation No. 1113/2019 as local organization. The name Gebrher has
Geez origin; it means wise and faithful servant. The founders are eighteen volunteer
professionals with commendable experience in public service who believe that they are
responsible for giving a better opportunity for disadvantaged people in Ethiopia (see
our team). Gebrher is determined to bring health and social services to the people in need
through well-designed, culturally geared, and sustainable programs.

Sources of Funding: This agency avoids any external funding and operates on the income it
obtains from its members duo to membership fees and contracts with indigenous organizations.

Foreign sources and Indigenous Sources: Gebrher doesn’t have any Foreign source instead
some indigenous sources which is a membership fee.

Community Owned resources: No community owned resource.

Infrastructure Facilities: As the agency is a recently established organization it doesn’t have

any infrastructure facility owned by it. It uses Meqrezs’ hospital as an office.
Buildings: None

Transport: None

Communication Aids: During my visit I met the General Manager at the office. So I observed
the office is well organized, there were laptops, cell phones and a fast internet connection.

Audio /Video equipment: The agency uses volunteer photographers to take a picture of events.
So there is no audio or video equipment owned by the agency.

Relationship with other Agencies: Gebrher has support and sister companies that works with
the agency. These organizations are Meqre general Hospital, Top Consultancy, Wendowosen
Teshome Construction, Ahadu Bank, ETHEC networking and Instalation, Pagume tour and
Travel. This agencies support Gebrher in two ways. Some of them provide supports in kind and
the other in cash that will be spend to educate the community based students.

Relationship with government departments: From the establishment of the agency it has a
relationship with Association of civil society services. Other than this the agency also has a
relationship with Women and child affairs.

Relationship with local government: As mentioned above the geographical work area of
Gebreher touches many parts of Ethiopia. In order to do all these Gebrher has a relationship with
Amhara and Oromiya Regional Governments.

Relationship with Community Based Organization: Gebrher has a plan to work with Edirs,
Ekub and Tsiwa mahibers on Street mothers project. But till now it doesn’t have a relationship
with any of them.

Opinion on the relevance and quality of services provided by the agency: Till now Gebrher
has been doing some activities that can go along with its purpose. It had a medical mission in
Debrebirhan for Internally displaced people. This mission provides medical equipment including
medicines that costs around 1.4 million. This event has taken place using Debrebirhan University
as a center and addresses all the IDP centers. Besides this Gebrher had also a medical mission on
Baysh kolfe NGO which taken place for 3 days and other medical missions.
On the education category Gebreher has 190 students who are supported monthly by Gebrher
donors through a conjoint account of the student and his/her legal guardian. This community
based sponsorship enables the student to live in their original compound, go school where they
were going before. They will not be taken to some shelter or will not be orphaned. This has a
great impact in their future as they are living within the community, they will be able to
communicate with people, know the culture the norm and etc. So Gebrhers ways of supporting
these children impressed me so much.

Problem faced by the agency and proposed remedies: The agency is mainly based on its
membership fee and the income it gets from partner or sister companies. So as an organization it
has been facing not being secured on the finance and on the continuity of the members.

Internal Problems: As most of the agency’s work is carried out by volunteers shortage of
dedicated members is the biggest problem.

External Problems: No significant external problem

Future Plan: Gebrher has a plan to launch a giant project to support street mothers. This project
requires 10million ETB budget. The purpose of this project is to help those mother who has
infants and living on the street to accommodate food, shelter and cloth. This will be done through
provision of vocational trainings, capacity building trainings to the mothers so that they can help
themselves and their babies. Gebrher also planned to establish Health centers for remoteareas of
our country so that the people there can have a health service in the nearby center. As it is on its
early age, there are also lots of thing that the agency plan for the future. They promise to treat
every penny donated, to be committed to help the poor to the best of their ability. They also
promise to provide givers appropriate and timely recognition, to be truthful in their
communications. They will provide a copy of complete and accurate financial statements by
external auditor upon written request.
