PRINCIPLES
Ken Follett was born in Cardiff (Wales) on June
5, 1949, into a deeply religious family (his
parents belonged to a Puritan sect). He was the
eldest of three siblings, and his parents,
Martin and Veenie Follett, did not allow their
children to watch television, go to the cinema
or listen to the radio. Ken's greatest source
of distraction was the stories his mother told
him and the fantasies and adventures he
imagined for himself. He started reading very
early; books became his greatest pleasure and
the library his favorite place. He himself says
nowadays that he is glad he read so much as a
child, because before being a writer, you need
to be a reader.
YOUTH
In 1967 he entered
the University
College of London,
where he studied
philosophy. After
graduation, in the
fall of 1970, he
enrolled in a three-
month journalism
course and got a job
as a reporter on the
South Wales Echo in
University College
Cardiff. After three
London
years in Cardiff, he
returned to London as
a reporter for the
Evening Standard.
WRITING
CAREER
Although his most
famous work is
historical, most of
his books are
thrillers, suspense
and even adventure.
Although he has 36
books signed with his
name, among his most
outstanding titles
are "The Eye of the
Needle", "The Wings
of the Eagles", "The
Third Twin",
"Whiteout", and of
course, "The Pillars
of the Earth".
