M.Tech Specialization: Thermal
Company in which you are placed: Airbus
Profile for which you are selected: System Installation Engineer
Interview Experience of the company in which you are selected:
 Technical: The interviewer gave me opportunities to think by myself for the
questions. The questions were not totally related to the field of my study, but the
interviewer guided me to the answers very well. The questions were practical
relating to aircraft mostly and not much subject oriented questions. Questions on
projects undertaken. At start I was asked to introduce myself through my projects
and other technical experiences I have gained.
 HR: This interview was sort of trying to build pressure on me. Constant questions
on why we should hire you when you are from different profile. Questions based on
my resumes about relevance of some items/ skills in my academic life or
professional career. Leadership roles, Management, stress handling, Low points in
life were also part of questions.
Your preparation strategy:
 For written test: GATE/ESE questions.
 For Technical: Personal Hand-Notes made for competitive exams.
 For HR: Talking with friends about how to answer questions, Mock Interviews
among friend circle, interview experience of others through online resources as well
as friend circle.
Advice to the students based on your experience:
Remain Calm and be ready with your answers. Do prepare your answers beforehand,
writing down and practicing is best. Be ready for all kinds of curve-balls and negative
attitude, interviewers will throw at you and handle it to your best. They are just trying to
see how you react under pressure. Prepare for exams by using GATE/ESE questions and
take time out from your academics to complete those portions.

Company in which you are placed: Mercedes Benz (MBRDI)
Profile for which you are selected: PGET
Interview Experience of the company in which you are selected:
 Written Test:

proper explanations for the projects included in resume
o Also prepare subjects related to the projects you did, you will be asked basic
conceptual questions from those subjects.
o Panelist might also give few problems to solve and explain on paper.
o My B.Tech project was on design so I got questions from SOM, Machine
Design, TOM
o At the end of TI, panelist asks few HR questions also like why Mercedes,
what skills you bring on the table if you get selected, what qualities Mercedes
have that other brands don’t have, Tell few models of Mercedes etc
 HR
o After TI there will be full HR interview where you can expect typical HR
questions and it is better to prepare for them beforehand
o Questions were like, introduce yourself, strength and weakness, strength
example, what you are doing to overcome weakness, how will you tackle the
conflict in team, what if you don’t get the department of your choice

 Both in technical and HR interviews panelists were very supportive. Even if you
don’t know the answer just explain them what and how you are thinking about the
question because they are judging you more on how you are approaching to solve
the problem rather than getting the final answer.

4
Your preparation strategy:
 For written test:
o I started revising my gate notes for technical tests as well as brushing up
technical knowledge which will be required for technical interview from

latest news

 For HR:
o For HR, I prepared typical HR questions and also prepared for possible
counter questions
o Prepared 3 strengths and 2 weaknesses also prepared for examples of the
same
Advice to the students based on your experience:
 Don’t start preparation too early i.e. at the start of semester. Starting preparation
from sept or October is sufficient
 Prepare GATE previous 1 mark questions for tests
 Prepare projects and internship experience neatly because most of the interview will
be based on projects and internships
 Prepare basic subjects which are linked to projects
 Prepare typical HR questions and try answering them confidently because
confidence matters a lot in HR interview
 At the end study the company and do company specific preparations i.e. how your
projects and internship experience will be helpful for the profile and to the company
 Complete placement process is very stressful process and it tests your patience, so
be patient and try to be calm as much as possible

Full Name: Sandeep A
M.Tech Specialization: Thermal Engineering
Company in which you are placed: Reliance Industries Limited-New Energy
Profile for which you are selected: Team Member-Power Electronics
Interview Experience of the company in which you are selected:
 Technical: I got offers from Reliance and Whirlpool, I selected Reliance
o Reliance new energy:
1) After I gave my introduction they asked me to explain about my
project and cross questions were there in between regarding the
approach, challenges faced and as my project was on battery thermal
management system (BTMS) they asked why BTMS is necessary
what happens if we don’t do it? Then they asked me explain my B.E
Major project, followed by a course project of CFD. In my B.E project
also they asked the advantages disadvantages and what was our goal
and how did you achieve it.
2) In my resume I had mentioned CFD under course work so he asked
what you learned in the course then asked me to explain SIMPLE
algorithm along with other variants of SIMPLE and asked me to
discretize the governing equations in 1-D domain.
3) I had also mentioned CNC training programme in my resume so
they asked about G and M codes, how many axis machine did you use
and also which commercial software’s (both CAD and CFD) have you
used in projects and to rate myself in those software’s on a scale of
10.
o Whirlpool:
1) In my introduction told them I am working on BTMS, so asked me
explain how will you model a battery, followed by what are the
mechanisms by heat loss from the battery to the ambient.
2) After that he started to ask questions from free and forced
convections about various non-dimensional numbers followed by
mechanisms of heat transfer in both modes
3) Once the convection part was done they started on critical radius of
insulation followed by discussion on fins.

 HR
o Reliance New Energy:
They had asked us to fill a form which contained questions like
1) Who is your role model? Briefly explain why? How will you
describe your personality? What would you like to do in free time?

16
What are your strengths and areas of improvement (mention any 2)?
2) After I gave my introduction the following questions were asked
What do you like about IIT Madras?
Mention two qualities due to which you admire your role model?
How did you implement those qualities explain with a situation?
What is the recent skill which you have learnt?
If you are given say 10 tasks of equal priority and a deadline to finish
it how would you plan on completing it?
 How do you handle pressure situations?
 What are your weakness?
 Why do you want to join Reliance?
 Will you shift to Bombay?
o Whirlpool:
In second round there were two people one was HR and a technical
person, the HR did not ask any questions the technical person started
asking about my project and cross questioned based on my response.
Your preparation strategy:
 For written test:
1)For aptitude practice questions from Exam Veda, Indiabix and RS
Agarwal, prepare English well as there will be around 10-20 questions out of
total (60-80) questions. The speed required is one question per minute
calibrate yourself accordingly.
2) For technical prepare GATE one mark questions and previous year IC
engine questions of ESE.
3) Majority of technical questions will be theoretical, except in Caterpillar
(No calculator) and Bajaj (Virtual calculator) due to which the aptitude along
with English will be the decider.
 For Technical:
Prepare your resume thoroughly i.e. prepare a basic structure of how you are going
to explain the contents of your resume and write it down and practice. Once this is done
see your resume from third person perspective and think of all the cross questions that
might arise write that down and formulate answers to them.

 For HR:
Prepare answers to basic questions like strength and weakness, biggest
challenge in life and how did you overcome it, why should we hire you,
where do you see yourself in next 5 years. There are tons of videos on
YouTube go through them and formulate answers well before the interview,
definitely there will be some unexpected questions thrown despite the
preparation be calm and answer it accordingly.

17
Interview Experience of the company which you were rejected (If Applicable):
1. Bajaj Auto: Weren’t interested in thermal engineering.
2. Airbus: Required the knowledge of coding only.
3. GE: Took proper technical interviews asked really good questions and after that
made us to wait for long hours(5 hours) and at the end right away declared the results
by saying time wasn’t sufficient to conduct the further rounds of interview , they
literally wasted our time and it really was a bad experience.
4. Caterpillar: 15 minutes after the commencement of the interview they said I am
from Thermal background and they were looking for design people and asked me
to give interview in a different panel there also they started asking questions from
design which I was unable to answer.
5. Eaton: In first round the only technical question asked was explain your major
project in simple words and rest all questions were managerial like tell me about
your family background, would you be willing to shift to Pune etc. The second round
was pure HR with same questions which were asked in round one but in a different
sequence and in both rounds they were noting down the responses.
6. Mercedes Benz R&D: There were two technical rounds where questions were asked
based on my project, application of radiation heat transfer, resistance network. It
was a really good interview experience and I made some mistakes in Heat Transfer
due to which I guess I wasn’t selected.
Advice to the students based on your experience:
 Prepare English well and work on the question speed in aptitude and for interviews
please start working on the M.Tech Major Project as early as possible so that you
have some results to show during the interview and “What is the need for doing this
project?” this question will be definitely asked in some way or the other in majority
of the interviews so prepare well in advance and do not bluff in your resume.
 Prepare a proper introduction for technical and HR well in advance as this will be
the first question asked to you in both the interviews and give your responses very
specific to the question asked. Do not ignore the HR round prepare well in advance.
 Prepare questions from allied areas of your project like in my case as I was working
on BTMS, I had prepared on types of batteries advantages, disadvantages, electric
vehicles(pros and cons over IC Engines),types of motors in EV,emission control in
IC Engines.
 In technical try to answer questions from physics perspective, not from
mathematical point of view.
 Try to quantify the things as much as possible in your resume and invest good time
in making the resume and get it reviewed.

18
 Some companies do a resume shortlist and the criteria for which is unpredictable so
do not worry much.
 If you know the interviewer name beforehand go through his profile as you can
expect questions from his domain.
 Attend as many pre-placement talks to gain more insights about the company this
will definitely help in your HR interview.

Full Name: Ripunjoy Kalita
M.Tech Specialization: Mechanical Design
Company in which you are placed: Sedemac
Profile for which you are selected: Engineer R&D
Interview Experience of the company in which you are selected:
 Technical: There were two technical rounds. Each round was a mix of basic
electrical circuits, mathematics and physics problems. From my own performance
and the type of questions it was certain that they were not expecting us to fully solve
the problems but rather seeing our approach to solve them. Around 5 questions from
each round were asked.
 HR: There was no HR round and similar questions were asked during the second
technical round.
Your preparation strategy:
 For written test: Materials given from the placement team was really good and I
mainly relied on them. For MTech GATE candidates it was basically revising
whatever you have learned and for IIT B.Tech category you will be benefited if you
read previous year objective questions from ESE exams. (I am speaking specific to
Mechanical students only). For electrical I read some notes and slides for
mechatronics course and control systems and did some questions of basic electric
RLC circuits.
 For Technical: For technical, your basics need to be clear. Study basic RLC circuits,
basic on mechanical subjects, fluid mechanics and math basics. (This is specific to
SEDEMAC interview only)
 For HR: Some basic questions like:

o Why their company?

o Why this role?
o What you expect and how you see yourselves in 10 years?
Also prepare your own questions for the interviewer to show that you take
interest in this role.
Interview Experience of the company which you were rejected (If Applicable):
1. Apple (Manufacturing Role): There were 4 rounds, 3 technical and 1 HR. Only
one student got the offer and I was the waitlisted student. Technical Rounds mainly
consisted of questions being asked from manufacturing of certain components, like
iPhone, crank shaft, air pods, etc. Also questions were asked related to adhesives
31
(application and strength testing), laser cutting, machining processes, and other
questions directly from your resume. So be prepared. Unfortunately I would like to
add that there was a heavy bias towards students who had a BTech from an IIT and
also our resumes had a good proportion of influence, as was seen from the results
of the technical rounds. In our case the main differentiating factor was the resume
most probably since the other student had good amount of projects and also 2
research papers during their BTech.
2. General Electric (Edison Engineer): My experience was very poor for this
company since they allotted me to a completely different panel which was not meant
for Mechanical. And from our experience they just rushed the whole process and
didn’t even interview some promising candidates since they thought their quota was
filled. Overall it was not a good experience for us, although the company itself is
good so try your best, hope they rectify those errors during your time. For
mechanical they asked very basic questions so it won’t be an issue for you to get to
the HR rounds. Not sure about how many students were offered finally but it was
much less than what they promised. 2 students got PPI, so you can target for the
internship program too.
3. HiLabs (Product Manager): Honestly speaking I didn’t prepare too much for this
role since I was more interested in core mechanical jobs. I was shocked when I was
among the 15 students they chose from more than 600 student in the first place. In
the interview they had 3 rounds. From 15 students they selected 4 students for
second round and finally 2 students they selected (one international and one
domestic role). The first interview was based on product management and they gave
some case studies. For me they asked the following question:
a. What type of question you want to answer – case study, guestimate…..?
– case study
b. Which app do you use the most? – YouTube
c. What do you use it for? – Tech content
d. Suppose you have to increase the number of premium users what will
you do?
After that a lot of questions were asked and if I answered something he would
counter argue about the same and ask me to find another way or rectify it. It
went well but I was not able to answer the basic question- Why Hilabs? So I
couldn’t clear the round.
4. ExxonMobil (Got the offer but rejected): 1 GD round and 1 technical+HR. GD
round topic was – Is buy now pay later service a trap for the society? – They selected
around 60 percent of those candidates, selection criteria unclear though. In technical
be prepared with thermal questions like: some basic thermal cycles, gas cycles for
turbines, quality of steam, why super saturated steam is used, etc. It was nicely done
and the interviewers were regional managers and the plus point was from their

32
expression you will be able to judge their willingness to select you. They took 4
candidates in total. I rejected because I got an offer from earlier slot so I has to take
it.
Advice to the students based on your experience:
You might be overwhelmed by the amount of course material you will have to read
but don’t slow down. For GATE candidates it will be much easier as they just need to
revise. For BTech candidates don’t be worried about the sheer amount of course material
you will have to go through, read the materials shared by the placement team which will
cover 70 percent of what you will require to score the tests, rest you can go through
previous year gate and ese questions which will prepare you for the 85 percent. Rest 15
percent is luck, because what you know some other person might not have learned it and
vice versa. Prepare from the semester break itself.
Also majority of the companies conduct tests comprising of 40 percent aptitude and
sometimes even 100 percent aptitude so practice those questions too. There are relevant
materials that the placement team will share but you can prepare on your own too.

Company in which you are placed: Baja Auto Ltd
Profile for which you are selected: PGET
Interview Experience of the company in which you are selected:
Technical:
I was asked a series of technical questions strictly based on my resume. The
interviewer was knowledgeable and professional, and I appreciated the opportunity
to discuss my project and experience in depth.
Some of the questions I was asked included:
 Can you describe your experience in predictive maintenance?
 How would you apply your project in an industrial setup like ours?
 How would you handle a critical supplier failing to deliver a key component
on time?
 How do you prioritise tasks and manage time effectively in a fast-paced
environment?
 Can you discuss a specific situation where you had to troubleshoot and
resolve a complex operational issue?
HR:
I was overwhelmed when I walked into the room, but the interviewer was friendly and
professional. Some of the questions I was asked during the HR interview included the
following:
 Can you tell me a little about yourself and why you're interested in this role at
Bajaj Auto Ltd?
 How do your previous experiences and skills make you a good fit for this
position?
 What do you know about Bajaj Auto Ltd, and why do you want to work for our
company?
 Can you describe your work style and how you approach challenges and
problem-solving?
Overall, the HR interview allowed me to provide more detailed and personal
information about my qualifications and motivations. I appreciated the opportunity to
learn more about the company and its culture.
Your preparation strategy:
 For the written test:
A helpful strategy to prepare for a technical test is to study the gate syllabus and
focus mainly on 1-mark questions. This approach has several benefits:

35
 The comprehensive gate syllabus covers various topics commonly tested in
technical exams. By studying the syllabus, you can gain a broad understanding
of the subjects likely to be covered in the test.
 Focusing on 1-mark questions can help you develop a thorough understanding
of the key concepts and principles relevant to the test. These questions are
typically brief and to the point, which makes them an excellent way to test your
knowledge and ensure that you are prepared for the exam.

 For Technical:

Review the skills and experiences listed on your resume to ensure that you
are familiar with all the information you have presented. This will help you
to talk about your background and qualifications confidently and accurately
during the interview.

Research the company and the position for which you are applying. This will
allow you to understand the company's products, services, and culture and
the specific responsibilities of the role. This will also help you to tailor your
responses to the interviewer's questions and show that you are a good fit for
the company.

 For HR:

Review your resume and highlight any relevant experiences or

accomplishments demonstrating your skills, knowledge and potential value
to the company. Consider including specific examples of how you have
excelled in past roles or have contributed to the success of your team or
organisation.

Prepare responses to common behavioural interview questions that may be

asked based on your resume. These questions are designed to assess your fit
with the company's culture and values and your ability to handle challenges
and work effectively with others. Some examples of behavioural questions
that may be asked based on your resume include:

 Can you provide an example of a time when you had to work

collaboratively with a team to achieve a common goal?
 How have you handled a situation where you were required to take on
additional responsibilities outside your job description?
 Can you give an example of a time when you had to overcome a challenge
or obstacle to achieve a goal?

M.Tech Specialization: Manufacturing
Company in which you are placed: General Electric
Profile for which you are selected: Gas Power
Interview Experience of the company in which you are selected:
 Technical: It was around 30-40 mins. As a usual introduction and then a discussion
about my M.Tech project. Then I needed to choose two subjects (B.Tech/M.Tech).
I choose Mechanics of solid and thermal science. Because GE is a design Unit. So
I chose Mechanics of solid and thermal science as Ge works in power and renewable
energy sectors. Rest time is utilized in questions from these two subjects
 HR: After the Technical interview, they conducted a Managerial Interview. It was
more kind of a discussion about various issues we can face in the day-to-day
working environment .it went around 30-40 mins. After that, they did an HR round
and their questions were pretty conventional questions we can find on the internet
like why do you want to join, what do you want to achieve in 5 years, etc.
Your preparation strategy:
 For the written test: I followed Gate’s short Notes for technical and did some
practice from gate’s previous years. I Practiced aptitude, and logical reasoning from
various sources like Arun Sharma’s book, India Bix, etc.
 For Technical: I targeted the design and Thermal part of BTech courses. Had all the
concepts and definitions. From Mtech courses some common definitions and
concepts at the surface level I had remembered.
 For HR: Truly I was not at all so much prepared. In the Managerial interview at
every question, I was putting myself in every scenario and tried to give as positive
answers as possible.
Advice to the students based on your experience:
Be confident while delivering the answers. Prepare as much as possible. Before
Saying anything Think and then go forward. if you do not know the answer, do not bluff,
instead say the answer may be this. and have a good logical explanation of why you are
thinking so. because all the answers we may not have, but they will see your approach

Company in which you are placed: Fynd
Profile for which you are selected: SDE
Interview Experience of the company in which you are selected:
 Three technical rounds were there and no HR round. Among the 3 rounds first war
kind of resume round there they asked about whatever was there in resume. For
almost 40 min they asked me many things like the skills that i mentioned the
projects that I made and put on resume. It’s better if you can deploy some of your
projects in some free hosting servers then they can directly see the work that you
did and explaining will be easier. In 2nd round they asked me some medium level
coding and questions, it went almost for 30 min. Pseudo code will be expected if
syntax is not remembered properly.3rd round was cs fundamentals like OS,DBMS
and computer-networking.
Your preparation strategy:
 I prepared coding from geeks for geeks and leetcode. Try to finish the easy and
medium level major data structure (array, string, linked-list, tree, and stack)
questions from these platforms. Consistency is the key in this regard. I watched lot
of videos of DBMS, CN, and OS also some top 100 questions like that in YouTube.
For courses I would recommend 100 days of web development by Angela Yu in
udemy and some coursera courses offered by Meta. Practicing aptitude is also
important.
 I prepared for some data science and ML courses from coursera by Andrew Ng. The
placement google drive shared by the placement team was really helpful.
 For HR: No HR prep as such
Advice to the students based on your experience:
 Practice coding regularly try to give the coding test by platforms, insti-CDCR,
coding club etc.
 Don't take much pressure .Take few days off placement seasons will be very hectic
generally speaking.
 Network with seniors of relevant job roles to clarify your doubts.
