The IGOROTS are one of the indigenous ethnic groups in the Philippines that have long been the
subject of scholarly inquiry and public interest. With their distinct cultural practices, languages, and
traditions, the Igorots have played a significant role in the history and identity of the Cordillera region
and the country as a whole. However, despite their rich heritage and contributions, the Igorots have also
faced various challenges, including cultural marginalization, discrimination, and poverty.
In this research, we seek to explore the diverse aspects of Igorot culture, history, and contemporary
issues. By examining the available literature, conducting interviews with Igorot individuals and
organizations, and analyzing relevant data, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of who the Igorots
are, their lived experiences, and their aspirations for the future. Through this study, we hope to
contribute to the promotion of Igorot identity and empowerment, as well as to the broader discourse on
indigenous peoples and cultural diversity.
-CHAPTER 1-
Research on the Igorots is a broad subject area that encompasses a range of topics related to the
indigenous peoples of the Cordillera region in the northern Philippines. The Igorots are a diverse group
of people who have their own distinct cultures, languages, and traditions.
Studies on the Igorots have been conducted by scholars from various disciplines, including
anthropology, sociology, history, linguistics, and environmental science. Some of the earliest studies on
the Igorots were conducted by American anthropologists during the colonial period in the Philippines.
One of the most famous scholars who conducted research on the Igorots was the American
anthropologist, Henry Otley Beyer, who conducted extensive research on the Cordillera peoples in the
early 1900s. Beyer's work focused on the history, culture, and language of the Igorots, and his research
has been influential in shaping the study of indigenous peoples in the Philippines.
In more recent years, research on the Igorots has focused on a range of issues, including indigenous
knowledge systems, sustainable development, environmental conservation, human rights, and cultural
preservation. Scholars have also explored the impact of globalization, tourism, and modernization on
the lives and cultures of the Igorots.
Overall, the study of the Igorots is an important area of research that can contribute to a deeper
understanding of the diversity and complexity of indigenous cultures and their interaction with wider
society.
