A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN

IN SCIENCE
FOR GRADE 6
By Jackie Anne U. Antig

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
 Identify the Jovian Planets in the solar system and its characteristics
 Appreciate the importance of discovering the Jovian Planets
 Draw and color the Jovian planets orderly

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: The Solar System (Jovian Planets)
B. References:
Science Beyond Borders textbook pages 216-218

C. Materials: Solar System Paper TV
Paper Strips
Solar System App
D. Values Integration:
Appreciation of the works of God
Cooperation and Teamwork
E. Science Processes: Exploring
III. PROCEDURE:
A. Preparatory Activities
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Checking of Attendance
 Passing of Assignment
 Reminding of Class Rules during discussion
B. Review
Ask the students about the previous lesson. (Solar System and the
Terrestrial Planets)
C. Motivation:
Introduce the game “Amazing Race”
The pupils will be divided into four groups. Each group will choose
5 representatives to do the tasks. There will be 5 stations wherein the
pupils will perform a task (balloon popping, powder blowing, yarn untying,
gum blowing, and paper airplane making) for them to get the letters. After
completing all the tasks, the remaining members will arrange all the letters
to form the mystery word. Whoever identify the mystery word first will be
declared as the winner.

Play the “Amazing Race” game (2-4 minutes)

D. Presentation of the Lesson

In the game, the pupils formed the words JUPITER, SATURN, URANUS
and NEPTUNE.
What do you think these set of words are? PLANETS
E. Discussion

Jupiter
5th planet
largest planet (If Earth were the size of a grape, Jupiter would be the size
of a basketball)
Named Origin-King of Roman gods
Diameter-139, 820
Distance from the Sun- 778million km
hydrogen and helium
Rotation- 9 hrs and 56 mins, which gives the Jupiter the shortest “day” of
any planet
Revolution-12 Earth years
Moons-more than 75
Rings- 4 faint ring system made of dust
Exploration- 9 (Juno, Pioneer 10 and 11, etc.)
Great Red Spot

Saturn
6th planet-2nd Largest
Named Origin- Roman god of agriculture and wealth
Diameter-116, 460km
Distance from the Sun -1.4 billion km
Rotation- 10 hrs and 40 mins.
Revolution-29 Earth years
hydrogen and helium
Moons-53 known moons with an additional 29 moons awaiting for
confirmation of their discovery-that is a total of 82 moons
Rings- 7 rings made up of ice, dust and rocks
Exploration- 9(Pioneer 11 and Voyagers 1, 2 etc. )

Uranus
7th planet
“sideways planet”
Diameter- 50, 724km
Distance from the Sun -2.9 billion km
Rotation-17 hrs and 20 mins (west to east)
Revolution-84 Earth years
Name Origin-greek God of sky
1st planet found using a telescope
Moons- 27
Rings-13. It is made up of ice and little dust.
Hydrogen, helium and methane
Exploration-Voyager 2

Neptune
8th planet
Diameter-49, 224km
Distance -4.5 billion km
Rotation-16 hrs and 10 mins
Revolution-165 Earth years
Named origin- Roman god of the sea as suggested by Le Verrier
Moons-14
It has at least 5 main rings & four more ring arcs w/c are clumps of dust &
debris
Hydrogen, helium and methane
Exploration -Voyager 2

And so, if the first to fourth planets are called Terrestrial Planets,
what do you call the 5th to 8th planet? Jovian Planets

Discuss why Pluto is no longer included as one of the planets in the

solar system.

F. Application
Kids, do you want to play another game?
Okay! Now, we will play WHO AM I?
I will show you some riddles. You are going to answer the
riddles and spell it out using the letter cards. The first group to get 3 points
will be declared as the winner

Riddles
Named after the Roman god of agriculture and wealth. Far from the sun,
that’s 1.4 billion kilometers away. Who am I? - SATURN

With more than 75 moons, you might say I have a lot. Look at with a
telescope to see my big, red spot. The spot is a wind storm swirling
around. Who am I?—JUPITER

I’m the farthest of all the planets. A distance of 4.5 billion kilometers from
the sun. Only one spacecraft mission has flown near me. ----NEPTUNE

A gas giant that’s off in the distance. I’m blue and cold and far away.
People say I’m funny because I spin sideways. Who am I?--URANUS

I’m a giant gas planet out in space. There are bands of stripes all over my
face. When it comes to size, I’m number two. I have 7 bright rings,
that’s a good clue. Who am I?—SATURN

I’m the largest planet named after the King of Roman gods. I have the
shortest “day” of all the planets. One day on me takes 9 hours and 56
minutes only. Who am I? —JUPITER

I’m the first planet found using a telescope. The only planet named after
a Greek god.. Just like Venus, I spin from west to East.--Uranus

Named after the Roman god of Sea. Look past Saturn and Uranus for me.
Who am I?--NEPTUNE

G. Generalization
 What are the Jovian planets?
