What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Students will learn how to work with these basic produc<vity tools by using them to create a
short digital storybook that highlights the science content they are learning. This will allow
students the freedom to create a digital project that displays their knowledge of the needs of
plants and animals.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply. (Some, mes only one op,on will
apply.)

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the ac<vi<es. Students are guided by the
teacher's direc<on and expecta<ons.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the ac<vi<es. They may select the topic for
presenta<on and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

x Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are comple<ng projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objec<ve could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, pos<ng the project to the classroom blog,
presen<ng it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementa,on: The students will be crea,ng a short digital storybook to show
the needs of either plants or animals. This project will follow our lesson on plants and
animals basic needs and will provide the students the opportunity to create a final display
of their knowledge on this content. The students will be taking notes throughout their
lesson to display in their storybook. The teacher will start this lesson by showing an
example of the project to the students. This will be heavily led by the teacher to help each
child through the steps. The teacher will help the students create their digital storybooks as
the students provide the content and knowledge they wish to display in their project. The
lesson can be concluded by the students sharing their projects with their peers to show off
their new skills.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students ac,vely involved in authen,c tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
This technology can be very new and in,mida,ng for students of this age. The students will
be split into groups to work together and allow the teacher more opportunity to work with
the students and help when needed. Making a storyboard can be very helpful for this lesson
as it requires serious focus from the students and extensive support from the teacher.
Allowing co-engagement can help keep the project moving, and can allow the teacher to
seek out the students that are more comfortable and capable with the technology being
used. These students can help support others and provide insight during the project
process. This lesson will need careful ,me management and planning to make sure the
students are allowed enough ,me to create their projects and become comfortable and
engaged with the technology.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Having the students use powerpoint to create a digital
storybook can allow space for students’ crea, vity and ac,ve engagement. This project will
be accessible to all by making sure students are working in groups and are supported by
both their peers and the instructor. They can receive help and support from mul,ple outlets
and are able to create a crea,ve and engaging product for their teacher and classmates to
show off their knowledge.

Reflec,ng on enhanced learning:

This lesson will not only allow for crea<ve expression and efficient display of knowledge and
content, it will allow for sufficient collabora<on and group work for the students to engage in
together. This is a cri<cal skill students need to learn, working with new technology while also
working with the ideas and knowledge of their peers to create on concise product to display.
This project is a posi<ve way to allow students the knowledge of new technology to use and
the skill of working with peers in this manner of collabora<on.
