Chapter 1

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Students absenteeism is one that affecting the academic

performance of students. There are many reasons why many students are

absent. It could be illness, aches, they have any problem like personal

problem or problem in financial, which affect their academic performance.

Still another cause of frequent student absenteeism is school related

factors, which positively or negatively, shape student’s commitment

towards school attendance. In this regard, (Eastman et.al 2007) observes

awkward school attitude and rule against absenteeism. Furthermore,

Robinson (2009) points out that in consistent school procedures vis-à-vis

student attendance, often fail to bring about satisfactory results in curbing

the trend of absenteeism.

Many reasons can be cited for school absenteeism, the most

important one is not liking the school:(Pehlivan,2006), the feeling of not

being secure at school yard e.g. because of tolerance for bullying. Often

drive students away from school compound (Clarck,2008), Similarly

Eastman et. al. ,2007; Gentle-Gennity 2008), argued that students

conflict among peers and with teachers, experiencing bullying from other
students, and sheer dislike of the teacher either because of his personality

or the he teaches are important causes of absenteeism.

Thus, this study was conducted to know the effects of student

academic performance based on their absenteeism. Also to know what are

the reasons why they are absenting.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the implication of student’s

absenteeism and the academic performance of the Grade 12 students of

Rofulo M. Landa Memorial High School for school year 2022-2023.

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following question:

1. What are the demographic profile of the students in terms of:

1.1 AGE

1.2 GENDER; and

1.3 GRADE LEVEL AND STRAND?

2. What are the effects of student’s absenteeism in academic

performance of the students?

3. Is there a significant relationship between student’s absenteeism

and academic performance?

1.3 Scope and Delimitations

This study is focused on the relationship of student’s absenteeism

and academic performance of the students of Rofulo M. Landa Memorial

High School year 2022-2023.

This study is focused on grade 12 academic track students of

Rofulo M. Landa Memorial High School which involves the student’s

frequency of absences.
1.4 Significance of the Study

This study is significant to the following:

Students. This study will help the student’s performances

provides the general background of a student is progressing.

Parents. This study will serve as a way for their children to

know them the performances of their children.

Teacher. This study will help the teacher to guide and teach

the students better.

Future Researcher. This study will serve as a guideline for

the future researcher if they have with the topic of the present

researches they can easily get ideas based on this study.

Chapter 2

Theoretical Framework

2.1 Review of Related Literature

Despite the strictness in attendance of the school, absenteeism is

an important issue that affects the performance of the students. When

students are absent from lectures, they miss valuable information and do

not clarify concepts resulting in inadequate learning and compromised

academic performance.

According to Vidyakala and Priya (2017), there are many factors

that results to absences of the students like family health or financial

concerns, poor school environment, transportation problems, and differing

community attitudes towards education.

According to Hidayat et. al. (2012), Low performers were

significantly more likely than higher performers to miss class when the

class was held before or after an examination and low performers were

significantly more likely to believe that participating class did not benefit

them. Based on the result, there was a negative association between the

number of hour students’ missed and their academic performance.

According to Santibañez and Guarino (2021), there are lot of

negative effects of absenteeism, particularly in middle school. Absences

negatively affect social-emotional development.

Based on the study of Sauers, McVa, and Deppa (2005), the

students who were absent from class on random days was taken

performed significantly lower on subsequent tests. In addition, the total

number of days of absent from class was negatively correlated with

performance on a comprehensive final exam.

According to Balkis, Arslan, and Duru (2016), there findings

revealed that student’s absenteeism negatively related to academic self-

perception, attitudes towards teacher and school, goal valuation,

motivation/self-regulation, and academic performance.

Research paradigm showing the “Effects of Online Gaming to the

Academic Performance of Grade 12 Students”. The first column shows the

demographic profile of the students which consist of their name, age,

gender, and strand, causes of their student’s absenteeism, which were

significant in the conduct of this study. It also involves how online games

will affect the students’ academic performance. The second column shows

the process the researchers are going to take which are profiling as,

survey/questionnaires as data gathering, and data analysis. The last

column shows the objective of the study to determine the relationship of

student’s absenteeism and academic performance.

2.3 Definition of Terms

1. Absenteeism - frequent absence from work or some other place

without good reason

2. Absentees – A person who is expected or required to be present at

school but it is not.

3. Academic Performance – The measure of student’s performance in

a variety of disciplines. Teachers and Educators typically measure

grades based on class grades, graduation

4. Students Absenteeism - A student being absent from school.

5. Frequency of Absences – Number or times of absences.

Chapter 3

Methodology

3.1 Research Design

This study is a quantitative in nature since the research questions

that we seek to answer lead to numerical data.

Specifically, the study is correlational study as it aims to determine

the significant relationship between student’s absenteeism and student’s

academic performance.

Siege in Connecticut (2015) defines descriptive correlational as a

design used to determine the extent to which two or more variables are

related among single group of people.

3.2 Research Participants and Sampling Method

This research employs a non-probability sampling to determine the

participants of the study which is purposive sampling. Using Slovin’s

formula, one hundred (100) participants will be chosen.

The population will come from the students of Rofulo M. Landa

Memorial High School in Grade 12 academic strand.

3.3 Data Collection Method

The research instrument that will be used in the study is a survey

questionnaire. It will serve as a way of the researchers in determining the

relationship of student’s absenteeism and their academic performance.

The survey questionnaire consists of two parts: the respondent’s

profile, and the possible causes and effects of absenteeism using coding

type of questionnaire.
