Theory of Structures Assignment#2
I. Theory
1. Briefly explain:
a) Statically indeterminate structures
b) The degree of freedoms of a structure
c) The kinematic indeterminacy of the structures
d) The advantage and disadvantage of statically indeterminate structures
2. What are the methods used for the analysis of statically indeterminate structures?
3. Suppose you are going to analyze statically indeterminate structures using
force/flexibility/consistent deformation method/, what are the procurers you
follow to analyze the structure?
4. What are the two methods under displacement method of analyzing statically
indeterminate structures?
II. Calculation/workout/
1. Using the force/flexibility/consistent deformation/ method, draw the shear force and
bending moment diagram of the beam shown in fig-1 below. The support at ‘B’ is
settled by 30mm. 𝑬 = 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝑮𝑷𝒂, 𝑰 = 𝟏𝟕𝟏𝟎(𝟏𝟎𝟔 )𝒎𝒎𝟒

Fig-1
2. Determine the member end moments, reactions and draw the SFD and BMD for the
three-span continuous beam shown in Fig-2 due to the uniformly distributed load and due
to the support settlements of 30 mm at C, and 15 mm at D. 𝑬 = 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝑮𝑷𝒂, 𝑰 =
𝟏𝟕𝟏𝟎(𝟏𝟎𝟔 )𝒎𝒎𝟒
Use the slope-deflection method

3. Draw the moment diagram for each member of the frame. Assume the support
at A is fixed and C is pinned. EI is constant. Use cross method of moment distribution.
