SECTION 16121
MEDIUM VOLTAGE CABLES

PART - 1 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION
A. General:
1. Furnish all labour, materials, tools, equipment, and services for medium voltage
cables as indicated in the drawings and in accord with provisions of Contract
Documents.
2. Completely coordinate with work of all other trades.
3. Although such work is not specifically indicated, furnish and install all
supplementary or miscellaneous items, appurtenances and devices incidental to or
necessary for a sound, secure and complete installation.

1.02 SUBMITTALS
A. Shop drawings: Required for Owner's review.
B. Product data: Required for Owner's review.

1.03 APPLICABLE CODES AND STANDARDS

A. When a new Saudi standard is issued. It automatically takes precedence over any other
standard or specification.
The following codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of
quality for materials and products.
1. SASO – Saudi Arabic Standard Organizations
2. SEC – Saudi Electric Company
3. IEC – International Electrotechnical Commission.
4. BSS – British Standards Specification.
5. ASHREA / IESNA: American Society of Heating Refrigeration and
Airconditioning Engineers 90.1 – 99.
6. IECC: International Energy Conservation code , Code , 2002.

1.04 TESTING
All cables shall be tested at the factory in accordance with the latest standards as
specified herein. Following completion of the tests, four certified copies of the test
reports shall be submitted to the Owner not later than 10 days after completion of all
factory tests.

PART - 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL
This specification covers the requirement of cross linked ploy ethylene (XLPE)
insulated cables. The cables covered by this specifications are copper conductors XLPE
insulation and PVC sheath. Cables to be installed as direct buried shall be steel wire
armored cables.
Cables shall be capable of operating at sustained conductor temperature of 90 ºC. and
suitable for a maximum short circuit temp. of 250 ºC for 5 seconds.
Cables shall be constructed in accordance with IEC 502.83

2.02 REFERENCES
1. IEC 228 conductors of insulated cables.
2. IEC 230 impulse tests on cables and their accessories.
3. IEC 502 extruded solid dielectric insulated power cables for rated voltage from 1
KV up to 30 KV.
4. IEC 540 tests methods for insulation and sheaths of electric cables and cords.
(Elastomeric and thermoplastic compounds).

2.03 CABLES TYPE

A. The cables shall be single core or multi-core with stranded copper conductor, XLPE
insulated PVC sheathed. The cables shall conform to IEC 502. the conductor shall be
circular stranded copper to IEC 228. the sheath shall be red coloured PVC to IEC 502.
the PVC sheath shall be embossed with manufacturer's name, conductor size, and cable
type and voltage level. The direct buried cables shall be armored types. The cables shall
meet the SEC requirement. The cables shall be used for 13.8 KV system:
1. Sealing and drumming:
After test at the manufacturer's work both ends of the cable shall be sealed to
prevent the ingress of moisture during transportation and storage.
Cable shall be supplied on wooden or steel drums. Each drum shall bear on the
outside flange, legibly and indelibly in English language, a distinguishing
number, the manufacturer's names and particulars of the cable, i.e. voltage,
length, conductor size, cable type, insulation type and gross weight. The direction
of rolling shall be indicated by an arrow.

Drum Number
The spindle hole of the drum shall not be less than 110 mm diameter.
2. Factory testing:
The tests shall be carried out in accordance with the relevant clauses of IEC 502

PART - 3 EXECUTION

3.01 INSALLATION
The cables shall be installed in uPVC ducts or shall be installed as direct buried, and as
indicated on drawings.

3.02 FIELD TESTING:

The cables shall be tested, after installation as per IEC, 502
