Title: Parts of Plants

Grade Level: 3

Objective:

Students will be able to identify and describe the functions of the different parts of plants.

Materials:

- Plants of different types (e.g. bean plant, sunflower, etc.)

- Pictures or diagrams of plants

- Chart paper

- Markers

- Scissors

- Glue

- Worksheets (attached)

Procedures:

Introduction:

- Begin by asking the students what they know about plants.

- Write their responses on the chart paper.

- Discuss the importance of plants in our daily lives (e.g. food, oxygen, medicine).

Direct Instruction:

1. Discuss the different parts of plants using pictures or diagrams.


2. Describe the functions of each part of a plant:

- Roots: anchor the plant, absorb water and nutrients from soil.

- Stem: supports the plant, transports water and nutrients.

- Leaves: where photosynthesis occurs, make food for the plant.

- Flowers: reproductive parts of the plant, attract pollinators.

- Fruits: contain seeds, protect seeds until they are mature.

3. Have students practice identifying the parts of plants using real plants and pictures or diagrams.

- Pass out the worksheets and have the students label the parts of the plants.

- Check their work and give them feedback.

Independent Practice:

- Have the students make a plant diagram using the materials provided.

- They can cut out pictures of the different parts of a plant and glue them onto a large piece of paper.

- Have them label each part and write a short explanation of its function.

Closure:

- Review the different parts of a plant and their functions.

- Remind the students of the importance of plants.

- Ask them if they have any questions or need clarification on any of the information covered.

Assessment:

- Assess the students’ worksheets and plant diagrams for accuracy.


- Observe their participation during the lesson.

- Have a brief informal discussion with individual students to gauge their understanding of the lesson.

Adaptations:

- For students who need additional support, pair them up with a peer or provide them with a more
detailed diagram to label.

- For students who need more of a challenge, have them research different types of plants and create a
more detailed diagram or presentation explaining the parts and functions.
