Gross/Microscopic Description:

The specimen submitted consists of two bottles, both labeled as “sigmoid” polyp. The first bottle consists of two pieces of
light brown and irregular soft tissues measuring 0.3 x 0.2 x 0.2 cm. in aggregate dimension. The second bottle consists of two tiny
pieces of gray white soft tissues measuring 0.2 x 0.1 x 0.1 cm. in aggregate dimension.
The entire specimens are taken for microscopic studies and labeled as follows –
A – first bottle – 1 block B – second bottle – 1 block

Microsections of “A” disclose irregular glandular structures lined by tall columnar mucinous secreting cells with nuclear
pseudostratification. The supporting stromas show chronic inflammation.
“B” sections disclose only fibrinoid material.
*COMMENT: The tissues examined are composed of the superficial portion of the polyp. The base of the polyp and
the underlying colonic mucosa is not assessed. Suggest clinical correlation and follow up.
