Prevalence of rotator cuff injury in athletes

Introduction:
Shoulder pain is found not only in athletes but also in adults. Problem in
musculoskeletal system when followed by the athletic activities can
expose young athletes to pain and injuries in shoulder (1,2,3,4,5). Most
studies have been carried out about the prevalence of already
diagnosed shoulder injuries (6,7,8). However it is known that pain is
one of the first sign of damage. Cricket is the most popular sport
played in many countries. Cricket involved a large number of repetitive
activities that is during bowling and bating. (9). Many of the literature
available about cricket injuries focus on back injuries in elite cricketers
and a very little literature about prevalence of rotator cuff injuries in
cricketers (10). Only few studies have shown the prevalence of rotator
cuff injury in fast bowlers. These studies were limited to analysis of one
sport.
Data showed that swimmers that come with complain of rotator cuff
injuries were 18.6% to 39.6%(,10,12 13) while 5.5-12.5% of the volley
ball players were reported (12). Personal and sports characteristics
have been mentioned to be associated with presence of rotator cuff
injury in adults (9,14,15,16,17).
The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of rotator cuff
injuries in fast bowlers and possible associated factors.
