ITU-T G.65X Single-Mode Optical Fiber

ITU-T defines seven types of communication optical fibers: G.651 to G.657. G.651 is a multi-mode optical fiber, and G.652 to G.657 are single-mode optical fibers.
This document describes the optical fibers and application scenarios related to transport networks.

G.652 Fiber

G.652 fibers (single-mode fiber, SMF) are currently the most widely used fibers. Except drop cables for fiber to the home (FTTH) networks, nearly all fibers used in
long-haul and metro networks are G.652 fibers. Optical fibers have two windows: 1310 nm and 1550 nm. The dispersion at 1310 nm is small but the attenuation is
large. The attenuation at 1550 nm is small but the dispersion is large.
G.652 fibers have four variants: G.652A, G.652B, G.652C, and G.652D. G.652A and G.652B fibers have water peaks, whereas G.652C and G.652D fibers eliminate
water peaks for full spectrum operation.
- G.652.A and G.652.B: At 1310 nm, the optimal performance is achieved. At 1550 nm, high dispersion occurs.
- G.652.C and G.652.D: Low water peaks are provided at 1383 nm, which enables availability from 1310 nm to 1550 nm and supports coarse wavelength division
multiplexing (CWDM) transmission system.
