Achieving SDG 12 RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION in the Fast-

Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) Industry: Challenges and Opportunities

Research By: Kedarnath Gajewar & Abhishek kadam

Abstract: The Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry plays a vital role in the global
economy, but its rapid growth and consumption patterns raise concerns about sustainability.
This research paper examines the challenges and opportunities associated with achieving SDG
12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) in the FMCG industry. Through an extensive
analysis of literature, industry reports, and case studies, the study will explore the
environmental, social, and economic aspects of sustainable consumption and production in the
sector, focusing on key areas such as packaging and waste management. The findings will
highlight significant challenges for FMCG businesses in meeting SDG 12 commitments,
including complex supply networks, increasing consumer demand, resource depletion, and
environmental contamination. However, the study will identify several opportunities for
FMCG companies to drive long-term change, including innovative packaging materials and
designs, adoption of circular economy principles, sustainable sourcing practises, and
stakeholder engagement across the value chain.

In conclusion, this research will provide recommendations for FMCG companies,

policymakers, and stakeholders to accelerate progress towards SDG 12. These
recommendations include promoting product stewardship, investing in research and
development for sustainable alternatives, enhancing transparency and reporting mechanisms,
and engaging consumers through education and awareness campaigns.
