(Starting on next page, print from pg.3-13)

Method and Outcomes

The end-goal in practicing these exercises is to help you get better at improvising through
chord changes. It’s great to play them these exercises, of course, but study each one. Analyze
them. Learn the concepts so that YOU are learning how to do it yourself. Then improvise
your own versions based on what you’ve learned here.

We’re going to start off with playing chord tones. When we’re on a given chord you want to
know what notes make up that chord and learn the strongest places to place them. (Ex-1)

Then we learn how to play into our chord tones. The chord tones remain in the same places
but now we approach them from 1 note away (Ex.2 and Ex.3). Then we approach them from
2 notes away (Ex.4), then from 3 notes away (Ex.5). I encourage you to be creative and teach
yourself other ways of playing into the chord tones than we do here. You can use scalar ideas,
chromatics, and arpeggios, or use combinations.

Lastly, we will play through a solo (sort of an Etude) I wrote utilizing most of the same chord
tones that each of the previous exercises used. However, I did change things in the name of
musicality: Phrasing, rhythms, anticipations (landing on a chord tone early) which is done a lot
in jazz. A great exercise I recommend is to go through and circle all the chord tones
in the solo so you can see where in the lines they’re being utilized.

Improvising jazz literally comes down to using a combination of Scales, Arpeggios, and
Chromatics. But learning how to make them work together in a pleasing way is the cool part.
After practicing this for a month, you’ll never play a blues the same way you used to.
