1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
With the increase frequency of breaking and entry as well as personal threats to residents and
property damage, it is important to have an effective and efficient security architecture to oversee
the home and environment. The safety and security of lives and properties are of great worry and
should be rank high in the risk matrix. Thus, residential homes should be equipped with an
intelligent system planning to keep an eye on remotely, control and delineate activities to the
inhabitant. To attain security, safety, convenience, and control of the building, the need occurs
for an intelligent residential building automation system. Inhabitants through integrated IoT to
monitor, control conveniently and oversee their home activities from any place. According to [1],
Internet of Things (IoT) conceptualizes the idea of remotely connecting and monitoring real
world projects through the internet.
The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) platforms in the monitoring of residential building has
started to offer diverse services for resident security and surveillance. Actually, it’s a home that
uses the internet-connected devices to enable remote monitoring and surveillance
management. The video signal from the camera integrated with day and night detectors is
transmitted via the internet and seen by a log-in to the website url by the home owner for security
monitoring and management. Also incorporated is a voltage management circuitry that protects
the battery from draining below 40%.
Integrated IoT monitored residential homes are thus integral in ensuring a high quality of life by
monitoring and controlling the home environment. The primary objectives are protection against
home intruders or burglars and remote monitoring of the physical environment. Devices are
networked through the IoT home hardware technologies of camera sensors for wireless
communication, offering remote monitoring [2]. Through the internet, one could monitor a home
from any location, through dedicated mobile application running on a laptop or PC [3]. Camera
sensors will be used to monitor the home.
The concern of residential security has increased research interest in the use of IoT in monitoring
of residential building. Govindraj et al.[4] presented a smart home automation system to replace
the conventional home automation system using IoT technologies. The proposed system uses an
Android application to control and monitor appliances, temperature, motion, and gases in the
home environment, which is carried out via a satellite station and a radio frequency transceiver.
Data generated by sensors are stored on the Thing Speak cloud platform. A base station provides
the necessary commands for home control. Also, a mobile application was designed to
communicate with the satellite station, base station, and the cloud server for the overall control
of the home, with a graphical display of sensor readings.
A network based home surveillance /monitoring system presented by Zixuan Song [5] which was
based on the use local area technology for the interconnection of the camera and the control
system is connected to the internet.

However, several authors have attempted to design monitoring of building as well as other
appliances, at optimal cost and user-friendly installations are usually ignored.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Nowadays, there has been increase in burglary and intruders to residential buildings. This
technology when achieved will ameliorate the frequency. There is an increase in the use of
CCTV cameras for surveillance and monitoring but not integrated with IoT. For optimal and
lower cost, efficient design is to incorporates IoT to the CCTV sensors. The aim is for home
owners to remotely monitor activities happening in their houses.
1.3 Aim and Objective of the Study

The overall aim is to address the challenges of residential security threats using integrated IoT
based monitoring.
The objectives are as follows:
i. To develop an application for the remote monitoring of the residential home and its
surroundings
ii. To implement a CCTV based sensor for the detection of movement and intrusion in the
home

1.4 Research Methodology

The delineated objectives of this study are to be realized in the following methods:
i. CCTV camera sensors are installed in the perimeter of the residential homes.
ii. Arduino microcontroller board to serve as an interface for the Wi-Fi module and CCTV
camera sensors for remote monitoring.

1.5 Anticipated Contributions to Knowledge

This study could contribute to knowledge in the following ways:
i. It could assist the government to reduce residential insecurity which includes: theft,
breaking and entry,
ii. It could reduce attack on homes that have aggravated into sexual offences and assaults
and
iii. It could also make occupants live in peace without fear, irrespective of their locations.

1.6 Timeline
The set objectives of this study could be realized within three(3) months.
