This report is based on 1st session of the in-plant training conducted by National Diploma in Technology University
of Moratuwa. My 1st training place is New Royal Electrical. According to the schedule, in this three months I have
trained at kalutara GSS. And also gain knowledge about main functions, responsibilities, services and also many
engineering and technical areas of high voltage construction sites. This report gives a brief description of working
experience which I gained during the last 3-month training session. The knowledge gained from experience about
Electrical Workshop. And also identify the electrical equipment used for checking machines and also gained from
experience from high voltage construction.

1. INTRODUCTION ABOUT NEW ROYAL ELECTRICAL

Figure 1 – New Royal Electrical Logo

The year was 2003, where there is scarcity of local service provides for installation of High Voltage Grid Substations.
At that time, all High Voltage Substation contractors are foreign nationals. The contractors have to bring skilled
manpower for erection purposes from other countries. Mr. W N Ranjith, the entrepreneur, who started New Royal
Electrical in 2003 to cater skilled manpower to high voltage substation contractors.

Providing installation service for HV Substation only was not sufficient for the sustainability of the company, because
HV Substation comes time to time. As an entrepreneur he had switch for other electrical project too. Medium Voltage
Installations, Low Voltage Installations, Industrial Automation and Maintenance Services are few of areas he
targeted.

High flexibility, availability of high skilled manpower and committed to clients are few of key factors of the success.
New Royal Electrical is still first choice of both foreign and local contractors for electrical installation works.

In 2009, New Royal Electricals (Pvt) Ltd stared its operation to cater booming renewable energy sector, and as a
trading arm for NRE GROUP. NRE GROUP consists of New Royal Electrical and New Royal Electricals (Pvt) Ltd.

At present, 350+ employees are working under NRE GROUP umbrella. Safety is our culture, and quality is a
standard for all of our executions

1.1 VISION
To be the leader in the field of electrical installations in Energy Sector, Infrastructure Development Sector and
Industry.

1.2 MISION
To be the preferred electrical contractors maintaining the highest standard of quality, safety, leadership and
performances to our clients by the way of our continuous developments with preserving environment.

5
1.3 MAIN SERVICES OF NRE GROUP
 High voltage

 Medium voltage

 Low voltage

 Hydro power plants

 Wind power plants

 Ship building industry

 Overhead transmission lines

 Underground cable laying & termination

 Maintenance & services

 Earthing & lightening protection system

 Industrial lighting
 Power generation

1.4 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

PPE includes protective eyewear, insulated gloves, hard hats, aprons and breathing protection. Most
forms of PPE are not relevant to minimizing electrical risks in workplaces, except in relation to
energized electrical work.

Administrative controls and PPE do nothing to change the hazard itself. They rely on people behaving
as expected and require a high level of supervision. Exclusive reliance on administrative controls and
PPE must only occur where other measures are not reasonably practicable or as an interim control
while the preferred control measure is being implemented.

2. 132/33kV GSS kalutara

This is green power development and energy efficiency improvement project. Client of this project is CEB. Main
contractor is Siemens Cooperation, Germany. Electrical Sub contractor is New Royal Electricals. Two 132kv
transmission line come here from pannipitiya and mathugama GSS. Then reduce the voltage to 33kv and distribute.
Two step down transformers are used to do that process.

3. Works Ongoing Nowadays

All works are done with the CEB permission. Nowadays

3.1 Excavation

Figure 4 Excavator

Excavated according to ground earth drawing. This conductor path has 600mm deep from the top of tower
basement. Channels have horizontal and vertical with 5m intervals in the whole ground. Some areas excavated by
hand that excavator was not arrived.

3.2 Earth conductor laying

150mm diameter copper cable was lay along channel. That was crimped by electric crimping tool. Two types of
die is used to this process. 150 hexagonal die was used to crimped to four cable at cross area and crimped to
double and single hole lug for tower earth. Other die is c type die that was used to crimped 2 cable. After cable
laying soil compaction was started. Every tower has two earth point. If one was damaged other one is active

8
therefore when we laying cable two copper cable were crimped from the earth mess to tower basement that were
connect as diagonal legs of the tower.

3.3 Soil compaction
In the switch yard area was put 300mm soil layer and excavated. Then another 300mm soil layer put and
excavated. But in the road area didn’t do like that. Put 250mm soil layer and compacted. Did 3 times like that. If
soil was not compacted well when heavy vehicle going on the road it can be descend. Was used rammer machine
for soil compaction.

3.3 Lighting master towers erection
These towers are highest tower in the GSS. Its 14.8meters, these are used to give light GSS area. This GSS has
4 towers. Before erecting these towers must be worn all safety PPE equipment (full body harness belt, fall arrester
etc.) And gave personal protective instruction.

Figure 10 Tool box meeting about safety

We can erect the tower bottom structure below 2m without safety belts. We were used this erection full body
harness, pulley etc. before erection was checked all tower parts and washed all mud. All the nut and bolts were
put according to mentioned in the drawing.
