ACTION RESEARCH
(Grade 8 Science)
S.Y. 2017-2018

I. Situation
Grade 8 students with difficulties in understanding abstract concepts in selected
Science topics, serving as one of the primary reasons in getting low grades in the
aforementioned subject.

II. Problems

1. Why some of the grade 8 students have difficulties in understanding certain topics?
2. Why some of the students are not interested in some topics of science?
3. Why some of the students failed to get the main gist of the video presentation?
4. Why some students hard to visualize certain topics?

III. Plan of Action

The following are possible solution, which the researcher may solve the problems:
1. Allow the students to make reflections or summary out from the models or
video presented to assess their learning.
2. Engage the students to a series of simulated activities and different learning
models and charts to aid learning.
3. Conduct series of assessments that would not only evaluate their knowledge but
as well as skills and performance.

IV. ACTION

A. STRATEGY

1. The teacher will employ appropriate teaching strategies and methodologies that
will aid learner`s understanding.
2. Checked the answers of the students after an evaluation has given, eliminate
hesitations or queries regarding the topic.
B. Data to be collected
1. Formative scores
2. Summative scores

C. Data Analysis and Interpretation

There were four class sections that were under the study. These four section
was group into experimental and control group. Among the experimental groups were
grade 8 Guava and Grade 8 Jackfruit. On the other hand, Grade 8 Avocado and Grade 8
Sunkist were among the control group.

The topic that was discuss by the teacher include the following: fault,
earthquakes, and tropical cyclones. The experimental group, were subjected to
multimedia presentation way of instruction, while the control group were exposed to
traditional method of teaching.

In order to measure their comprehension level of the two group, their formative
and summative test scores were obtained.

The table 1 and 2 below shows the formative MPS of the control and
experimental group.

Table 1.Formative MPS Results Of The Control Group

Grade & Section MPS

Grade 8 Avocado 51.98
Grade 8 Sunkist 53.65
AVERAGE 52.815

Table 2.Formative MPS Results Of The Experimental Group

Grade & Section MPS

Grade 8 Avocado 68.83
Grade 8 Sunkist 69.02
AVERAGE 68.925
The experimental group has an average MPS of 68.925, which is higher than
the average formative MPS of the control group , which is only 52.815. This could only
mean that the experimental group have a higher comprehension level using multimedia
presentation compared to the group exposed to the traditional method of instruction.

Table 3 shows the average Summative MPS of the control group . The average of
the two section was 60.15.

Table 3.Summative MPS Results Of The Control Group

Grade & Section MPS

Grade 8 Guava 60.35
Grade 8 Jackfruit 59.95
AVERAGE 60.15
Table 4 shows the average Summative MPS of the experimental group . The
average of the two section was 75.6.

Table 4.Summative MPS Results Of The Experimental Group

Grade & Section MPS

Grade 8 Guava 75.1
Grade 8 Jackfruit 76.1
AVERAGE 75.6
Majority of the students in every class have understood the topic with the aid of
the multimedia presentation. The above statement were supported by the student`s
score gathered from their formative, and summative scores.

The students got a low score during the assessment period because of the
language used or the medium of instruction was English. Some words that were use
were not common to them. Thus, less understanding for the particular topic is achieve.

Therefore, the students` comprehension level is better when they are exposed
to multimedia presentation compared to students exposed to printed visual aids and
chalk talk methods.
