Urbanization and Land Use

Urbanization
What caused people to move into the cities?

-
The four key reason that create an urban center are:

1. Manufacturing - access to raw materials as well as markets in which to

buy/sell products
2. Transportation -roads/railways allow for movement of goods and people in
and out of the city. Helps with the growth of manufacturing.
3. Resources Use- discovery of a particular resource can lead to new
development and manufacturing opportunities, ie. the Gold Rush.
4. Service Center- small towns offer fewer services than larger towns and
cities. An increase in population leads to an increase in the number and
variety of services offered. (i.e.) Hospital Services

Local Service Centers

Ribbons - small stores, offices, gas stations etc that are built along the sides of
busy streets. (i.e. Wild Ginger Rd., the plaza across the street)

Centers - stores that are clustered together in malls (i.e. Conestoga Mall). This
mall was created in connection with climate planning.

CBD - Central Business District - this area is considered the heart of the of the
urban centers and is also typically the financial district of a city. It is where many
banks and other financial institutions are located (i.e.) Bay Street in Toronto, King
Street in Kitchener.
