out. Because of this, many cities were founded near
seashores to facilitate sea connection.
These cities were called polis, and they were city-
states, independent of one another. This means that
each polis ruled by their own laws, army, and
governors.
According to the Greeks, a city must serve the
community and thus it needed meeting places such as
squares, temples, fountains, and leisure centers.
