The Synergy Between Near Bit Resitivity Imaging & Geosteering: A Case Study of Bukit Tua Carbonate

The main objectives of this paper are to demonstrate the benefits of using advanced LWD geosteering technologies (Geosphere HD) in highly
heterogenous CD Carbonate reservoir in Bukit Tua Field, East Java Basin. The first implementation examples of utilizing near bit resistivity
image (RI) , directional deep resistivity (DDR), well paths can be geosteered and kept the trajectory in a CD Carbonate layered including
passing karst interval which targeting horizontal oil section.

Pre-job planning is essential for a successful delivery of the well objectives. Data from near-by wells was used to model the expected LWD resistivity &
DDR responses for the laterals. This pre-job modeling helped the well placement team to understand the expected tool measurements along the planned well
path and distance to boundary response from the inversion software and Real Time monitoring. In this study Near Bit Resistivity Image (POROTEX*)
analysis was used to distinguish productive vuggy zones and tight zones by applying the borehole image-based porosity analysis to validate permeability
calculation and its integration with resistivity inversion.

Results: Establishing a robust resistivity-to-porosity relationship, is a key approach to guide the geosteering while drilling, to chase the good porosity layers
which associate with Karst based on resistivity measurements. The near bit image is another indispensable logging tool in order to verify and correct if
needed the resistivity-to-porosity correlation if affected by a change in lithology or in the fluid composition.

Observation:Integration of deep resistivity inversion and PoroTex* results was able to differentiate intervals with karst/vugs , isolated & bed boundary
character which contribute to higher or lower oil production . From this characterization, appropriate empirical permeability equations can be applied in
each interval resulted in a reliable permeability log prediction.
Value: This technology has proven to be effective to overcome issue on reservoir heterogeneities & analysis of fractures network might help determine the
major types of porosity and their contribution in effective fluids flow.

This paper will broaden our understanding of the applications of Near bit resistivity image in complex carbonate/karstification , assess pore space
interconnectivity and how it integrates with geosteering in achieving well objectives. This synergy provides Resistivity image interpretations by integrating
the information obtained from near bit resistivity images, conventional well logs analysis, surface drilling data, mud logging data & it helps us to make
decisions about well placement & finally to meet well objectives.
