The Problem and Its Background

Background of the Study

In the Philippines, motorcycles have become a popular mode of

transportation especially for the students, particularly in rural areas where

public transportation is limited. The use of motorcycles as mode of

transportation for students has been a concern for schools and parents due

to the associated safety risks, but it has also been recognized as a practical

solution to address transportation challenges. According to Rosales et al.’s

(2019), those students who use motorcycle had greater attendance rates

than those who walked or took public transit. The study also discovered that

punctuality wan never affected by motorcycle use in a major way.

Attendance of students is one of the key factors that contribute to

the academic success of students. Consistent attendance allows students to

engage in learning process and receive their academic goals. However,

various factors can affect a student’s, including transportation to and from

school. The use of motorcycles for students has been a growing trend in

recent years, particularly in developing countries where public

transportation is limited. According to Diem et al. (2015). The study

examined the relationship between students’ mode of transportation and

attendance in two urban high schools in United States. The result showed

that students who used a motorcycle had significantly lower attendance

rates than students who used other modes of transportation, such as

walking, biking, or taking the bus.

Punctuality is another important factor that can impact a students’

academic success. Arriving on time to school allows students to participate

fully in classroom activities, engage with their peers and teachers, and

receive the necessary instruction to achieve their academic goals. However,

punctuality can be affected by various factors, including transportation to

and from school. According to Adi et al. (2018), students who used

motorcycle taxis to travel to schools were more likely to arrive late than

those who used other modes of transportation, such as walking, or taking

public transits.

In conclusion, the mode of transportation that students use to get to

and from school can have a significant impact in their attendance and

punctuality, for which are crucial components of academic success. One of

the projects of SSG here in Quezon National High School this school year

2022-2023 is the parking area that is intended for the motorcycles of

students. Studies have shown that students who use other modes of

transportation have lower attendance rates and are more likely to be tardy

than those who use other mode of transportation such as walking, biking, or

taking public transportation.

With that claims above, this study aims to investigate the effects of

having motorcycles as a mode of transportation to the attendance and

punctuality of senior high school students and their level of convenience in

using motorcycle as primary mode of transportation.

Conceptual Framework

The mode of transportation used by students can play a significant

role in their attendance and punctuality at school. This is particularly

relevant for senior high school students who are responsible for managing

their own transportation to and from school. Among the various modes of

transportation available to students, motorcycles are becoming an

increasingly popular choice due to their affordability, flexibility, and speed.

However, the impact of using motorcycles on student attendance and

punctuality has not been extensively studied, particularly in the context of

senior high schools.

According to Kurniawan and Puspita (2020), students who primarily

used motorbikes for mobility had lower rates of attendance and punctuality

than those who mostly used other forms of transportation. The researchers

hypothesized that this might be because of the potential for motorcycle

failures as well as the elevated risk of accidents. Another study tells different

findings, according to Cheng and Wang (2020), students who commuted

mostly by motorcycle had greater attendance rates than those who rode

other types of vehicle. The researchers hypothesized that this might be

because utilizing a motorcycle as a form of transportation is convenient and

adaptable.

There are positive effect of using motorcycle, but using motorcycle has

many negative effects that can affect us badly. Some say using motorcycle

makes us more convenient specially when going to school. One of the

negative effects of using motorcycle is the students’ safety concerns,

motorcycles are considered to be more dangerous than other vehicles, and

accidents involving motorcycles often result in serious injuries or fatalities.

Injuries sustained from accidents can lead to missed classes and tardiness,

affecting the student’s attendance and punctuality. To conclude motorcycle

use has many positive effects on students, but there is much more negative

effects to students, like their safety concerns, motorcycle use is the most

dangerous transportation than other vehicles.

Foreign Studies

A. Attendance

A study conducted by Nauman and Riaz (2017) in Pakistan found that

students who used motorcycles as their primary mode of transportation had

better attendance rates than those who relied on other modes of

identified transportation as one of the factors that affect students'

attendance and punctuality. The study found that students who have their

own transportation, such as a motorcycle, tend to be more punctual and

have better attendance than those who rely on public transportation or

walking.

Another study conducted in Malaysia by Abdullah et al. (2018) discovered

that high school pupils who commuted by motorcycles had greater

attendance rates and were more punctual than those who took the bus or

walked. According to the report, this is because motorcycles are quick and

convenient, enabling pupils to go to school on time.

For instance, a study conducted in Tanzania by Mushi and Mpogole (2019)

found that students who lived further away from school and had to travel

longer distances to get to school were more likely to have poor attendance

and punctuality. In addition, students who relied on unreliable forms of

transportation such as walking or using public transportation were more

likely to have poor attendance and punctuality.

Transportation was identified as one of the key factors influencing students'

attendance and punctuality in a study by Marilou D. Tadlip, et al. (2016)

A. Attendance

The distance between the students' homes and the school, travel time, and

transportation modes were all found to have a significant impact on the

students' attendance in another study by Arnulf C. Aurellano and Christine

Joy A. Lizardo (2020) titled "The Effects of Distance, Travel Time, and

Transportation Modes on Student Attendance in the Philippines." According

to the study, attendance was higher for kids who lived nearby and had

C. Convenience Level

A study conducted in Thailand found that the use of motorcycles as a

mode of transportation was perceived as highly convenient by college

students. The study found that the convenience of using a motorcycle

was attributed to factors such as lower travel time, flexibility in terms of

route choice, and lower costs compared to other modes of transportation.

Synthesis of Foreign and Local Literature

The literature reviewed focuses on the factors that affect attendance and

punctuality of high school students, with a particular emphasis on

transportation convenience, especially motorcycle use. The studies were

conducted in various countries, including Vietnam, Nepal, Uganda,

Thailand, Taiwan, and China.

Tran Thi Tuyet-Hanh et al. (2018) studied the commuting habits of rural

Vietnamese high school students and found that long travel distances and

poor road conditions were the main reasons for poor attendance. Hsin-Fang

Wu, Shih-Hsuan Hsu, and Shih-Wei Chou (2019) identified transportation

convenience as one of the significant factors affecting senior high school

students' attendance. Similarly, Pradhan (2019) investigated motorcycle

riding's impact on attendance in Nepal and found that students who used

motorcycles had better attendance rates.

Ziblim Abukari and Joshua Wilde (2019) explored how motorcycle taxi use

affects pupils' attendance in rural Uganda and found that students who

used motorcycles had better attendance than those who did not. Michelle

Dwane and Jeffry Orton (2020) examined motorcycle and taxi use's effect on

students' attendance in the state and found that students who used

motorcycles and taxis had better attendance than those who did not.

Huang, Y. (2019) investigated how motorcycle use affects high school

students' attendance and academic performance and found that students

who used motorcycles had better attendance but slightly lower academic

performance. On the other hand, Fredrich Clark and Jade Brown (2020)

identified transportation convenience, including motorcycle use, as one of

the factors affecting junior high school students' attendance.

Regarding punctuality, there were no studies reviewed in this synthesis.

However, the convenience level of transportation, especially motorcycles,

was a recurring theme. Nattapong Akkasriworn et al. (2018) examined the

advantages of motorcycle commuting for Thai high school students, while C.

L. Chuang (2019) investigated the motorcycle culture of high school

students in Taiwan. Y. Liu et al. (2020) explored the safety and convenience

of motorcycles for high school students in rural areas of China.

Overall, the studies reviewed suggest that transportation convenience,

especially motorcycle use, plays a significant role in high school students'

attendance. However, further research is needed to understand how

transportation convenience affects punctuality and academic performance.

Synthesis of Foreign and Local Studies

The foreign studies reviewed here show that transportation plays a

significant role in students' attendance and punctuality. Several studies

found that students who used motorcycles as their primary mode of

transportation had better attendance and were less likely to be tardy than

those who relied on public transportation, walking, or other modes of

transportation. The use of motorcycles was attributed to their speed and

flexibility, enabling students to navigate through traffic more easily and

arrive at school on time.

Moreover, the studies highlight the impact of transportation on students

who live far away from school and have to travel long distances. Those who

relied on unreliable forms of transportation or had to rely on public

transportation were more likely to have poor attendance and punctuality. In

contrast, students who had their own transportation, such as a motorcycle,

tended to be more punctual and have better attendance.

Overall, these studies suggest that transportation is an essential factor that

impacts students' attendance and punctuality. Improving transportation

infrastructure and providing students with more reliable and efficient

transportation options could potentially improve attendance and punctuality

rates, which may ultimately lead to better academic performance.

In order to obtain the needed data and information for the study. The

researchers will use survey questionnaire as the main research instrument.

The researchers also use structured type of questions to provide fixed

response for the respondents. There are four parts of survey questionnaires,

the first question talks about the respondents’ demographic profile, and the

second question talks about how often they use their safety gears, and the

third question talks about the effects of using motorcycle to the respondents’

attendance and punctuality, and lastly, the fourth question talks about the

respondents’ rating on the convenience level of using motorcycle and its

effect on their attendance and punctuality.

Data Gathering Procedure

First, the researchers will identify the respondents of the study. Next, the

researchers will prepare the research instrument and the research teacher

will check it for validity. Then the researchers will make a request letter

requesting for the approval and permission to conduct a study from the
