General Safety Rules

RULE 1: Wear proper lab attire while working in Chemistry Lab.

does not comply to Science Laboratory Dress Code

RULE 2: Wear Safety Eye Protection AT ALL TIME in Chemistry Lab

A Chemical Burn can be

RULE 3: Never enter Chemistry Lab unless your lecturer is present.

RULE 4: Never conduct unauthorized experiment without the


knowledge of a lecturer.

RULE 5: Listen to instructions and read all experiment procedures


carefully before beginning any experiment.

RULE 6: Never hesitate to ask if there is any questions concerning
experiment procedures or instructions.

Remember: Do not proceed with the experiment until you fully understand the procedures or
instruction.

RULE 7: Inform lecturer if you have any medical conditions (e.g


allergies, pregnancy, etc.) which could be aggravated by the
lab environment or materials used (e.g chemicals) in the
experiment.

RULE 8: Keep Bag & Drinking Bottles on the Shelves provided.

RULE 9: Sanitise your Hands and your Work Surface with 70%
Alcohol, if necessary.

Chemical Safety

1. Wear Safety Eye Protection (i.e safety goggles or spectacles) when handling
chemicals

2. Wear Disposable Gloves when handling Chemicals to protect your hands


from chemical exposure.

3. Treat all chemicals as corrosive and poisonous.

4. Use fume hood when handling volatile chemicals or chemical reaction that
may release irritating fume or gaseous.

5. Never taste or smell any chemicals in the lab.

6. Hold containers away from the body when transferring a chemical solution
from one container to another.

7. If you are instructed to smell a chemical, always waft the fumes toward your
nose with one hand. Do not put your nose over the container and inhale the
fume.

8. Hold the chemical securely and walk carefully when moving chemical from
one location to another.

9. Never return unused chemicals to their original container.

10. Keep volatile or flammable liquid away from heat source (e.g Bunsen
Burner, Hotplate and etc.).

11. Never Mix or Use Chemicals not called for in any experiment.

12. Always add acid to water slowly. Never add water to an acid.

13. Keep hands away from face, eyes and mouth when handling chemicals.

14. Wash you hands thoroughly with Hand Soap or Hand Sanitizer after
finished the experiment.

15. Know the location and operation of the following safety equipment in
Chemistry Lab:

Heating Safety

1. Never leave a lit Bunsen Burner unattended.

2. Never reach across an open flame.

3. Use tongs, test tube holder or heat-resistant glove to handle heated glassware.

4. Never point the open end of test tube being heated at yourself or others.

5. Never look down the container that is being heated.

6. Make sure that hair, clothing and hands are kept at a safe distance at all times
when performing any heating procedures.

7. Never heat a plugged or stoppered tube.

8. Always heat a test tube/ boiling tube at an angle and moving it back and forth.

Handling Glassware &
Equipment

1. Never use damaged glassware or equipment, check before use.

2. Do not immerse hot glassware in cold water, it will shatter.

3. Be careful when handling hot glassware in the science laboratory. Hot


glassware looks just like cold glassware.

4. Never handle broken glassware with bare hands. Use a broom & dustpan to
clean up broken glass.

5. Wash the lab glassware before and after use.

6. Never use mouth suction to fill a pipette. Use pipette filler instead.

7. If you do not understand how to use an equipment, ask the lecturer/lab
personnel for help.

8. Never put the hot test tube or boiling tube directly into a test tube rack. Allow
hot test tube or boiling tube to cool in a beaker before putting it back to the test
tube rack.

9. Never put hot glassware directly on the benchtop. Allow hot glassware to cool
on a white tile before putting it on the benchtop.

10. Do not use a thermometer as a stirring rod. Use the stirring rod
instead to stir the solution.

11. Never try to catch falling sharp instruments or glassware.

Cleaning & Waste Disposal

1. Clean work surface thoroughly at the end of the science practical session.

2. Wash glassware thoroughly after use and return them to their original storage
location.

3. Remove any debris from the sink after class. Do not block the sink.

4. Wipe the Work Surface with Reusable Cleaning Wipe.

Please DO NOT throw this

5. Clean up any spills immediately as instructed by the lecturer/lab staff.

6. Dispose the broken glassware into the designated “Broken Glass Bin”.

7. Dispose the chemical wastes properly into the Waste Container provided.
Never dispose the waste down to the sink.

Chemical Splash On Body
Flush the affected area of body with
running water from Safety Shower for
AT LEAST 15 MINUTES.
