Assignment-I

Module-1 (Probability)

1. If A and B are any two events, then prove that 𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵𝑐 ) = 𝑃(𝐴) − 𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵).
2. If A and B are any two events, then prove that 𝑃(𝐴 ∪ 𝐵) = 𝑃(𝐴) + 𝑃(𝐵) − 𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵).
4 1 1
3. If 𝑃(𝐴 ∪ 𝐵) = , 𝑃(𝐵𝑐 ) = , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) = , then find i) 𝑃 (𝐴), ii) 𝑃 (𝐴 ∩ 𝐵𝑐 ).
5 3 5

4. Two dice are thrown let A be the event that the sum on the faces is 9, let B be the event that
at least one is 6. Find i) 𝑃 (𝐴 ∩ 𝐵), ii) 𝑃 (𝐴𝑐 ∩ 𝐵).
1 2 1 1
5. The Probabilities the students A, B, C and D solve a problem are 3 , 5 , 5 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 4
respectively.

If all of them try to solve the problem what is the probability that the problem is solved.
6. A can hit a target once in 5 shots, B can hit two targets in 3, C can hit one in 4. What is the
probability that 2 shots hit the target?
7. Among 150 students 80 are studying maths 40 are studying physics and 30 are studying
Maths and physics. If a student is chosen at random, find the probability that the student i)
studying Maths or physics, ii) studying neither Maths nor physics.

8. If A and B are two events and 𝑃 (𝐴) = 2 , 𝑃 (𝐵) = 3 , 𝑃 (𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) = 5, then find

𝑖) 𝑃 (𝐴𝑐 ∩ 𝐵), 𝑖𝑖) 𝑃 (𝐴𝑐 ∩ 𝐵𝑐 ).

9. A class has 10 boys and 5 girls. Three students are selected at random one after the other.
Find the probability that first two are boys and the third is a girl.

10. If 𝑃 (𝐴) = 5 , 𝑃(𝐵) = 3 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) = 15
then find 𝑖) 𝑃(𝐴 ∪ 𝐵), 𝑖𝑖) 𝑃(𝐴 ∩

𝐵𝑐 ), 𝑖𝑖𝑖) 𝑃(𝐴𝑐 ∩ 𝐵𝑐 ).
11. A class has 10 boys and 6 girls If a committee of 3 is chosen at random from the class, find
the probability i) 3 boys are selected. ii) Exactly 2 girls are selected.
12. If A, B and C are mutually independent events, then prove that 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 and C are
independent event.
13. What is the probability of getting two queens, if we draw two cards from a pack of 52 cards?
i) With replacement, ii) Without replacement.
14. The students in a class are selected at random, one after the other, for an examination. Find
the probability that the boys and girls are alternate.
i) If there are 5 boys and 4 girls, ii) If there are 4 boys and 4 girls.

15. There are 12 cards numbered 1 to 12 in a box. If two cards are selected what is the
probability that the sum is odd i) With replacement ii) Without replacement.

distribution and 𝑃(1 < 𝑥 < 4)

17. A continuous Random variable has the p.d.f 𝑓(𝑥) = {
0, 𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒
