The Effects of Online Gaming on the Study Habits of Grade 10 Students of

Bagumbayan National Highschool

The prevalence of online gaming among students has surged in recent years,

raising concerns about its potential impact on their study habits. While online gaming

offers various benefits, such as social interaction and cognitive development, its

influence on academic performance and study habits remains a subject of debate. This

research aims to examine the effects of online gaming on the study habits of students,

providing insights into the potential risks and benefits associated with this popular form

of entertainment.

Numerous studies have explored the relationship between video gaming and

academic outcomes, shedding light on the potential effects of gaming on students' study

habits. For instance, a study by Gentile et al. (2017) investigated the association

between video game use and academic performance among adolescents. The findings

suggested that excessive gaming was linked to poorer academic achievement and

reduced time devoted to studying.

Additionally, research by Li et al. (2019) examined the impact of online gaming

addiction on the academic performance of college students. The results revealed a

negative correlation between online gaming addiction and study habits, with addicted

students exhibiting lower levels of self-discipline and time management.

Furthermore, a study by Kuss and Griffiths (2012) explored the relationship between

online gaming and academic engagement. Their findings indicated that excessive online
gaming was associated with lower levels of academic engagement and reduced time

spent on educational activities.

While these studies provide valuable insights into the potential effects of online

gaming on study habits, there is still a need for further research to explore this

relationship in greater depth. Understanding the specific mechanisms through which

online gaming influences study habits, such as time allocation, concentration, and

motivation, is crucial for devising effective interventions and strategies to promote a

healthy balance between gaming and academic pursuits.

This research aims to address the following research questions:

How does online gaming impact students' time management skills and study schedule?

 What is the relationship between online gaming and students' ability to

concentrate during study sessions?

 To what extent does online gaming influence students' motivation and

engagement in academic tasks?

 Are there any gender or age-related differences in the effects of online gaming

on study habits?

 What strategies can be implemented to promote a healthy balance between

online gaming and academic pursuits?

By employing a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and

qualitative interviews, this study will explore the effects of online gaming on the study

habits of students across different educational levels. By delving into the complexities of

this relationship, this research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for

educators, parents, and policymakers to develop informed strategies for managing

online gaming activities while fostering healthy study habits among students.
