1. Description

A. General

1. The crew seat is of advanced ergonomic design which allows the

seat to perform efficiently in the aircraft, whilst providing
maximum long term comfort and free movement of the occupant.

2. The seat is of lightweight construction and the complete

assembly comprises two basic structures: the upper structure
containing the adjustable thigh supports, adjustable armrests,
and controls to adjust back cushion recline and lumbar support;
the base structure containing the controls to adjust horizontal
and vertical positions.

3. The seat is either left or right hand (Captain or First

Officer) dependent upon the positioning of the horizontal
control, vertical control, recline control lever, and thigh
support control.

4. A headrest is fitted as standard to the seat and is attached

to the backboard.

B. Detail (Figures 1 and 2)

1. The seat base structure is of light weight construction

comprising aluminium alloy machined parts and panels. This
structure houses the mechanism for vertical and horizontal
adjustment, and the controls for both functions. Four bogie
assemblies retain the base to the aircraft seat tracks and
prevent lateral movement. Rollers located within each bogie
assembly assist the freedom of movement when adjusting the
fore and aft location. A positive spring loaded tracklock
mechanism prevents fore and aft movement on the seat tracks.

2. The upper seat is of light weight construction comprising

aluminium alloy machined parts and panels. The structure
houses all mechanism and controls for the adjustment of seat
recline, thigh pad pressure, back cushion in/out and up/down
movement.

3. The armrests are padded and individually adjustable, and may

be folded back towards the seat back structure when not
required.

4. The restraint system inertia reel is attached to the rear of

the seat back structure. The lap straps and crotch strap are
mounted on the seat pan. A life jacket stowage is provided at
the rear of the back structure.

OPERATION

2. Operation

A. Seat Mounting and Tracklock Mechanism

1. The tracklock mechanism is spring loaded by two tension

springs. When the horizontal control (H) is pulled towards
the rear of the seat, the tracklock pins disengage from the
tracks and this allows the seat to be moved the full limit of
the tracks. Subsequent release of the horizontal control (H)
allows the tracklock pins to engage in the seat tracks and
lock the seat in position.

B. Height Adjusting and Locking Mechanism (Vertical)

1. When the push button at the end of the heightlock handle is

pressed, the heightlock pins are withdrawn from the holes in
the heightlock plates. Subsequent raising of the heightlock
handle and the force exerted by the tension in the braided
rubber cords rotate the rear lift arms upwards, as the rear
lift arms rotate the forward lift arms are rotated in the same
direction by the action of operating bars mounted between them.
When the heightlock (V) handle is lowered, the forward and
rear lift arms rotate downwards and the seat lowers supported
by the braided rubber cords and controlled by the pressure on
the heightlock handle. When the push button is released the
heightlock pins are inserted into the heightlock plates,
locking the seat in the required position.

C. Thigh Support Control and Override

1. When the thigh support control is turned towards the forward

edge of the seat pan in a clockwise direction, a gear wheel on
the control shaft acts against a gear wheel on the cross shaft.
As the cross shaft turns, it winds the webbing which is
attached to the thigh pads. The movement of the webbing acts
against springs which creates a controlled downward movement
of the thigh pads.

2. When the thigh support control is turned towards the aft edge
of the seat pan, this results in the webbing unwinding and
with the aid of the springs a controlled upward movement of
the thigh pads.

D. Recline Control

1. The recline unit is located between the base of the seat back
structure and the underside of the seat pan, and is operated
by the RECLINE control.

2. When the RECLINE control is raised, a relay shaft rotates and

linkage withdraws a spring loaded latch plate from contact
with a coarse threaded nut within the recline unit. The
application of pressure on the seat back pushes a threaded
strut against a spring and through the threaded nut which turns
in response to the threaded strut, the spring is then
compressed and the seat reclines.

3. When the RECLINE control is released, the spring loaded latch

plate re-engages the nut and the seat back structure is locked
in position. If the RECLINE control is raised again and
pressure is released from the seat back, the spring which was
compressed re-asserts itself. The action of the spring causes
the nut to turn in the opposite direction, the threaded strut
pushes on the base of the seat back structure which returns to
an upright position. On release of the RECLINE control the
seat back is locked in position.

E. Armrest Positioning

1. The armrests are individually adjustable for height and can

each be folded back in line with the seat back structure. Each
armrest has an adjusting knob at the forward end which is
connected to an adjustment screw by a drive shaft. When the
knob is turned, the adjustment screw extends or retracts and,
by pushing against the armrest stop, raises or lowers the
armrest.

2. When the armrests are folded back, they are rotated around the
armrest support tubes until a stop pin engages with the other
side of the armrest stop; at this point, the armrests are
aligned with the seat back structure and can be pushed inwards
toward the seat centre.

F. Back Cushion Lumbar Control

1. The back cushion (attached to back board assembly) is

controlled by two handwheels, one on each side of the seat.
The handwheel on the left hand side controls the up/down
movement, the right hand handwheel controls the in/out
movement.

2. Rotation of the left handwheel turns a pulley wheel which

drives a toothed belt. A gearbox attached to the back
structure and driven by the belt operates a vertical screw
connected to the top of the back board. When the handwheel is
turned the back cushion will move either up or down.

3. Rotation of the right hand wheel turns a pulley wheel which

drives a system of belts, which operate pulley wheels mounted
in brackets attached to each side of the back structure. The
pulley wheels mounted in brackets operate drive screws which
are located in slots in the covered backboard. When the hand
wheel is turned the back cushion will move either in or out.

G. Headrest

1. The headrest is intended for use when the seat is reclined. It

is adjusted for angle by moving the headrest to the right and
rotating it to select one of eight possible lock positions.

H. Restraint System

1. Refer to the AM-SAFE Restraint System Component Maintenance

CLEANING

IMPORTANT: THE SEAT UPHOLSTERY CONFORMS TO EASA CS 25.853 AND FAR 25.853.

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO ENSURE THAT THE CLEANING

PROCESSES AND MATERIALS USED DO NOT DESTROY OR SERIOUSLY AFFECT THE
FLAME RESISTANT PROPERTIES OF THE UPHOLSTERY.

1. Crew Seat

A. General

1. Stains and dust should be removed as soon as possible, since

the difficulty of removing old stains and dirt might cause
damage to the materials concerned.

2. Wherever possible, vacuum cleaning should be employed, or the

upholstery removed for commercial dry cleaning, if stained or
ingrained with dirt. It is recommended that a local aviation
authority approved facility is used for the dry cleaning
function.

NOTE: Dry cleaning a sheepskin cushion cover will not affect

the flammability qualities of the material, however, dry
cleaning will affect natural sheepskin, in that it will
cause the skin hide to harden and possibly cause the
fastening strips to come away from the sheepskin. It is
therefore recommended that the sheepskin is only dry
cleaned if excessively stained or dirty, and to a maximum
of 4 treatments.

3. Plastic surfaces may be cleaned using a suitable diluted liquid

detergent. This must not affect the plastic part. The method
of application and precautions required must be in accordance
with the manufacturer's information and must meet all local
aviation and regulatory authority requirements.

4. Painted surfaces may be cleaned using a suitable degreasing

solvent or a suitable diluted detergent. These must not affect
the properties of the painted part. The method of application
and precautions required must be in accordance with the
manufacturer's information and must meet all local aviation
and regulatory authority requirements.

5. Minor damage to external painted surfaces can be made good by

retouching. Information regarding the paint to be used is
provided in Table 1.

replacement parts. It comprises three sections, INTRODUCTION,
ALPHANUMERICAL INDEX AND DETAILED PARTS LIST.

B. Alphanumerical Index

1. This index contains all the part numbers which appear in the
detailed parts list, together with the relevant figure and
item number for each part and the total quantity per seat
assembly. The order of precedence of part numbers is as
follows:-

a. Letters A to Z
b. Numericals 0 to 9

C. Detailed Parts List

1. The parts list illustrates and describes all the replacement

parts contained in the seat assemblies. Each assembly and sub-
assembly is shown in the logical order of disassembly.
Illustrations of the various assemblies are assigned a figure
number and each part an item number which corresponds to the
item number in the item column.

2. The Illustrated Parts List figure number is suffixed by a dash.

3. A part number which is listed but not illustrated is prefixed

by a dash.

4. The nomenclature gives the name of a part and its relation to

other parts. The configuration of numbers 1234567 gives this
relationship, which is as follows:

a. Example
1234567

5. Where possible, each vendor part is given a vendor number

(*****) in the 'NOMENCLATURE' entry for that part. Refer to
Table 1 to obtain the name and address.

6. Attaching parts are listed and precede the detailed parts of

that assembly. The separation symbol '* * *'
indicates the end of the attaching parts.

7. The 'EFF CODE' column indicates the relationship of replacement

parts to specific seat assemblies which may include various
options, e.g. A: First Officer, B: Captain.

8. The quantity shown in the 'PER ASSY' column is the quantity

that is necessary for the next higher assembly. A/R shows
that the quantity of parts to be used is 'as necessary'. The
RF shows that the part or parts are given for reference only.
Where left hand (LH) and right hand (RH) sub-assemblies are
listed and have identical attaching parts, the attaching parts
are listed for one assembly.
