CHAPTER 1

Inrtoduction

In this particular topic, we will explore the strand preferences of Grade 10 Students and how it can

benefit their future courses. Strand preferences refer to the choice of academic track or program that

students choose to take in their senior high school years, specifically in Grade 11 and 12. These track are

offered in most countries K-12 curriculum, as it prepares students for their future endeavors, whether it in

college or in the industry.

Choosing the right track is a crucial decision for students as it can affect their future career path,

and this is why it is important to consider the factors that can influence their choices. By understanding

their interest, skills, and strengths, students can select the right track that allow them to excel and enjoy

their studies.

In this study, we aim to delve deeper into the strand preferences of grade grade 10 students and

how it can impact their future courses. We will explore the different tracks offered by different education

systems, the factors that influence their choices, and the benefits of selecting the right track. This paper

aims to guide educators and parents in helping students make informed decisions and to ensure that their

education is aligned with their goals.

We conduct this study because some Grade 10 students are unsure of their Senior High School

elective choices. (ABM, Stem, Humms, TVL) whereas some Grade 10 students have already chosen their

track of study, but they performed poorly.

The advantages of this study include that the students will have knowledge about their future courses,

which will make it simple for the, to succeed in their studies.

Background of the Study

The implementation of the K-12 curriculum in various countries has introduced senior high school

as an additional two years of education for grade 11 and 12 students. These two years are essential in

preparing them for higher education or employment. The curriculum has different academic tracks, also

known as strands, offered to senior high school students, defending on the education system. Each strand

is designed to develop specific skills and knowledge needed for further study or work in the specific field.

Supporting Sentence

The strand preferences of Grade 10 students can affect their college degree choices and future

career paths, as the tracks offered in senior high school prepare them for specific fields of study or

industries. Some popular strands offered in senior high school include STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics), ABM (Accountancy, Business, and Management), HUMSS (Humanities

and Social Sciences), and GAS (General Academic Strand), among others.

Factors that influence strand preferences include personal interests, parental guidance, peer

influence, academic performance, and career aspirations. Selecting the right strand can provide benefits

such as gaining relevant knowledge and skills for future courses or jobs, increasing employability, and
