Introduction

Filipino students were among the lowest performing groups of students among all

the participating countries in the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

In mathematics, less than 20% of students demonstrated the minimum proficiency level (Level

2), while more than 50% showed very low proficiency (below Level 1). Scoring below the

lowest level of proficiency in the PISA, these Filipino students have been clearly left behind in

terms of mathematics education; more than half of this age group of Filipino students have

inadequate mathematical skill compared to their peers in other parts of the world. The poor

performance in mathematics also varied in degree between the students in public and private

schools, where the means were 343 and 395, respectively (Department of Education 2019).

Mathematics is a fundamental part of human thought and logic, and integral to attempts

at understanding the world and ourselves. Math has many benefits that many people don’t even

realize. It can help develop specific areas of the brain and improve analytical and reasoning

skills. It can help students become more practical and be beneficial in everyday situations. In a

scholastic sense, math is also one of the stepping stones into going into a STEM (Science,

Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) major. Learning math skills at an early age can

create a basic foundation for everything a child learns in the future. Research shows that the

development of math skills is a better indicator of future success in reading and math than any

other skill.

High school grades matter most if you have hopes of going to college. The grade point

average (GPA) is one factor that colleges may consider when deciding to accept or deny a

student. Students with good grades have high chances of getting a scholarship. Colleges also

look at grades when deciding whether to award funding to students, better grades, higher test
scores, and involvement in various activities can help a student get more money for college.

Grades can also be a factor for consideration in an honor society. Students find that involveent in

an honor society or other club makes them eligible for special funding and opens the door to

incredible opportunities.

Purpose of the study

The purpose of this study is to assess the difficulty level of the Grade 10 Newton’s 3rd

Quarter math curriculum. This involves analysing the content, concepts, and problem-solving

skills required in the subject matter.
