This assessment will evaluate the attainment of:

CO 3: Compute the first law of thermodynamics on open and closed TOTAL
system in solving various thermodynamics problems. (C3) MARKS /100

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS:
1. Answer all questions in the provided space in this question paper.

2. Answers should be written in English.

3. Answer should be written in blue or black ink except for sketching, graphic and illustration.
Question 1

(a) Consider two closed systems A and B. System A contains 3000 kJ of thermal energy at
20°C, whereas system B contains 200 kJ of thermal energy at 50°C. Now the systems are
brought into contact with each other. Determine the direction of any heat transfer between
the two systems.
(10 marks, C2)
(b) The pressure in a natural gas pipeline is measured by the manometer shown in Figure 1
with one of the arms open to the atmosphere where the local atmospheric pressure is 98
kPa. Determine the absolute pressure in the pipeline.

Question 2

(a) Consider two rooms, Room X, which is insulated, is heated by burning candles, while
Room Y, is heated by an iron that is left plugged in. Identify the energy interaction occurs
in each of rooms, whether they are heat or work interaction. Take the entire room,
including the burning candles and iron respectively, as the system.
(10 marks, C2)
(b) Consider a double-fluid manometer attached to an air pipe shown in Figure 4. If the
specific gravity of one fluid, SG1 is 13.55, determine the specific gravity of the other fluid,
SG2 for the indicated absolute pressure of air. Take the atmospheric pressure to be 100
kPa.

Question 3

(a) Someone claims that his hot coffee in a mug is being cooled by the cool air blowing from
the nearby air conditioner that has been set at 16oC. Explain whether this claim violates
the second law of thermodynamics.
(5 marks, C2)
(b) Consider a building whose annual air-conditioning load is estimated to be 120,000 kWh
in an area where the unit cost of electricity is RM0.10/kWh, as shown in Figure 5 below.
Two air conditioners are considered for the building. Air conditioner A has a seasonal
average Coefficient of Performance, COP of 3.2 and costs RM5,500 to purchase and
install. Air conditioner B has a seasonal average COP of 5.0 and costs RM7,000 to
purchase and install. All else being equal; analyze both possibilities and justify which air
conditioner is a better buy.

Question 4

(a) A can of soft drink at room temperature is put into the refrigerator so that it will cool.
Explain whether the cooling process of the can in the refrigerator is in accordance with
the second law of thermodynamics.
(5 marks, C2)
(b) The lighting requirements of an industrial facility are being met by 700 40-W standard
incandescent lamps. The lamps are close to completing their service life and the
management is considering to replace them with 34-W high-efficiency fluorescent lamp
that operate on the existing standard brightness. The standard incandescent and
fluorescent lamp (Figure 4) can be purchased in quantity at a cost of RM1.77 and RM2.26
each, respectively. The facility operates 2800 hours a year, and all of the lamps are kept
on during operating hours. Taking the unit cost of electricity to be RM0.105/kWh and the
brightness factor to be 1.1 (i.e., brightness factor consumes 10 percent of the rated power
of the lamps), analyze the possibility of management to switch from standard
incandescent lamp to high-efficiency fluorescent lamp if the payback period is expected
to be less than 6 months.
