Ganesh Chaturthi

Introduction

Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival celebrated

on the occasion of birthday of Lord Ganesh

Widely worshipped as the God of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune


Traditionally invoked at the beginning of any new venture.
Lord Ganesh is remembered on Ganesh Chaturthi which falls on the fourth day of the month of
Bhadrapad in the Hindu calendar.
Ganesh Chaturthi is a ten-day celebration.

History of Ganesh Chaturthi

• Ganesh Chaturthi was being celebrated as public event by Peshvas in Pune since the times of
Shivaji Maharaj

• With the fall of the Peshwas, Ganesh Chaturthi lost state patronage and became a private family
celebration.
Indian freedom fighter and social reformer Lokmanya Tilak introduced a new way of celebrating
the Ganapati festival as collective community worship.

Conclusion

• Ganesh Chaturthi, is a festival in August or September, is celebrated to mark the birth


anniversary of Lord Ganesh.
The Hindus believe that praying to Lord Ganesh during during the festival will bring good luck
and prosperity prosperity for the family.

• For 10 days, Lord Ganesha is worshipped.

• On the 11th day, the image is taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with
dancing, singing, to be immersed in a river or the sea.

• After the final offering of coconuts, flowers and camphor is made, people carry the idol to the
river to immerse it.
