Accommodating Additional Guests

While Set Sail for Disaster has twenty-two primary characters (with a minimum of ten
required) including the host or hostess, it is designed to accommodate any number of
additional players through the use of the Investigator Character class.

The Investigator Character is an easy-to-integrate solution that will allow you to

accommodate any number of additional guests by assigning them the role of
Investigator. Investigators are silent observers who are allowed to “listen in” on
conversations between the primary characters and help solve the mystery, but who do
not have specific background stories or scripted interactions. You may choose to have
any number of Investigators take part in your party.

Investigators can:

 Listen in on other guest’s conversations;

 Collect clues during the scavenger hunt;
 Ask questions during the “Presentation of Evidence” portion of the party;
 Cast votes on who they think the culprit is;
 Cast votes on any other awards, such as “Best Actor/Actress.”

The Investigator character sheet is included at the end of this document, as are
Investigator name tags. Simply print one character sheet and one name tag for each
Investigator.

Note: At the beginning of the party, you should explain to all the guests that the
Investigator characters should be treated as “flies on the wall” who are free to listen in
on private conversations and observe private interactions between the primary
characters. Primary characters in the presence of an Investigator should speak to and
interact with each other as though that Investigator wasn’t there.

If you have any questions about how best to accommodate your particular number of
guests, please contact us at service@playingwithmurder.com and we will be happy to
help!
Investigator Act One
Who You Are
You are an investigator, tasked with determining what precisely happened, and who is
responsible for the murder.

During Act One of the party, you should observe and listen in on the activities and
conversations of the named guests. You are an invisible observer, so the other guests
should speak as if you were not present (if need be, you may remind them of this fact).
Your job for now should be to take notes on anything interesting, scandalous or
suspicious.
Investigator Act Two
A Murder Has Occurred! What Should You Do?
 During Act Two of the party, you should take part in the hunt for clues. During the
Presentation of Evidence, you are encouraged to ask questions and present your
theories on who the culprit is. When it is time to vote on the identity of the killer
(and on any awards, such as Best Actor/Actress or Best Costume), you will fill out
the voting sheet and turn it in to the host or hostess.
