PINEWOOD ACADEMY GROUNDS, AFTERNOON

MARGOT is lounging on the grass, with a book, with LAURENCE by her side,
aimlessly throwing a rugby ball up and down in the air. EDISON, JULIET,
and ELIJAH are sat with them. WINNIFRED is also there, sat quietly
slightly apart from the group.

REUBEN spots the group from across the lake, and approaches.

REUBEN
Alright, guys?

Nobody acknowledges him. MARGOT eventually looks up, and gives him a
small wave. He sits beside her.

REUBEN
(TO LAURENCE)
How’s your head?

LAURENCE
Fine.

REUBEN
Listen Laurence. How about we put yesterday
behind us? We're going to need to get along sooner or later.

LAURENCE
If you would shut up about it then maybe I would
be fine about it.

REUBEN
I’m trying to be nice.

LAURENCE
There’s a surprise.

REUBEN doesn’t know what to say to this.

LAURENCE looks around the grounds, and spots a girl across the way,
DIANA. She is sketching with charcoal. He doesn’t recognise her. EDISON
also spots her.

EDISON
(With a slight disgust)
There’s someone new.

JULIET
You don’t like new kids?

LAURENCE
2.

Just more annoyance.

REUBEN
True.

JULIET
I don’t suppose it’s their choice though, is it?

LAURENCE light a cigarette. REUBEN goes to do the same, and can’t find
his lighter.

REUBEN
Got a light?

LAURENCE throws him his lighter.

REUBEN (CONT’D)
Cheers.
Meanwhile, JULIET has gotten up, and has gone over to DIANA. She watches
her for a second, then speaks up.

JULIET
Nice drawing.

DIANA
Thanks. It’s that small chapel just there. I
thought it was beautiful so I just sat and had to sketch it.

She gestures over to the school chapel, hidden amongst the bushes across
the lake.

JULIET offers her a hand.

JULIET
Juliet.

DIANA
Diana. Diana Shelley. I’ve only just arrived here
recently.

They shake hands.

JULIET
We noticed.
She gestures to her friends. EDISON acknowledges this, and waves
sarcastically. ELIJAH silently nods. The other boys don’t even notice.

JULIET (CONT’D)
We’re hanging out over on the bank, if you'd like
to join us?
3.

DIANA
It’d be my pleasure.

DIANA gets up, and the two walk back toward the group. Meanwhile…

LAURENCE
Why is she speaking to her?

ELIJAH
Because unlike you she has some manners.

JULIET and DIANA approach.

JULIET
Everyone. This is Diana. She’s come to sit with
us.

DIANA
Hello.

LAURENCE
Why weren’t we asked about this?

MARGOT
Because she can do what she likes.

ELIJAH
(without looking up from his book)

Ignore him, Diana.

LAURENCE
Don’t ignore me!

REUBEN
Ignore him.

MARGOT gives DIANA a smile.

MARGOT
I’m Margot. Come sit.

Everyone settles back down on the bank, the wind picking up slightly and
lightly tussling blouses, hair, and book pages.

MARGOT
That’s my brother, Laurence. And you’ve met
Juliet. And then we have Reuben, he’s on the rugby team,
Edison, and Elijah. And that’s Winnifred.
4.

WINNIFRED waves.

REUBEN
Hi.

ELIJAH
Hello, Diana.

EDISON ignores her.

An awkward silence falls over the group, before, eventually…

REUBEN
So. Do you play any sports?

ELIJAH
This is painful.

DIANA
I have to agree. Are you always this stuck for
conversation, or am I just lucky?

MARGOT
(To LAURENCE)

Why don’t you tell them your story? The one you
told me.
JULIET

I'm all ears for a story.

LAURENCE

The grounds are haunted.

EDISON

How compelling.
MARGOT

Tell it how you told it to me!

LAURENCE
That's how I told you. The old theatre is
haunted. There were noises, and stuff moving about. There's
nothing else to say.

Laurence starts to play with a lighter.

MARGOT
You said you saw something. Like a figure or
something, right? By the ghost light?
5.

LAURENCE
I tried to use my lighter and it wouldn't light.
I looked around and thought I saw what looked like a person or
a shadow of someone.
REUBEN
Any explanation as to why it wouldn't light?
JULIET
He did say it was haunted.
ELIJAH
Okay? It’s haunted. But still doesn’t explain why
the fire didn’t light.
DIANA
He has a point.
LAURENCE
And you think I know why?
REUBEN
Alright, alright. Since it can’t be explained,
I’ll go with it.
MARGOT
Can ghosts do that? Stop fires?
LAURENCE

I don't know.
DIANA
That doesn’t have to be a ghost. There’s got to
be some sort of evidence as to why you can’t light a flame in
that one spot.
EDISON
Why are we even discussing this? Ghosts aren't
real.
WINNIFRED
Ghosts are real.
Every seems to have forgotten Winnifred was even there.
MARGOT
So, Edison. If ghosts aren't real, what
else could it be?
EDISON rolls his eyes.
REUBEN
How about we go and check, tonight? See if we can
figure out an alternative.
6.

JULIET

Or see a ghost.
DIANA

No way.

ELIJAH
I’m with the new girl. I’m not doing that.
MARGOT

I'm in. Winni?

Winnifred smiles.
WINNIFRED
Okay.

MARGOT
Great.

PINEWOOD ACADEMY LIBRARY, MORNING

LAURENCE stalks his way into the library, and crashes directly into
WINNIFRED.

LAURENCE
Will you watch where you’re going? Are you blind?

A few books topple over off of the pile she’s holding as she stares
blankly at LAURENCE.

WINNIFED
You should watch where you’re going. And no, I’m
trying to do some work. Please go away.

She starts to collect her books.

LAURENCE finally acknowledges who he’s run into, and immediately feels
bad about yelling at her.

LAURENCE
Oh. It’s you. Right.

WINNIFRED peers over at Laurence, semi-shielding herself behind a

bookcase.

LAURENCE
What are the books for?

WINNIFRED
Work. Like I’ve already said.

LAURENCE
Yes, but what work?

LAURENCE plucks the top book off of her pile.

WINNIFRED
Biology, we have a test on Monday. Please can I
have that back?

LAURENCE
We do?

WINNIFRED
Does it matter? You’re never there.
LAURENCE hands back the book, and decides to try a different tact…

LAURENCE
Maybe you could give me some extra tutoring.
8.

WINNIFED
Absolutely not.

Now very flustered, WINNIFRED toddles off.

MARGOT rounds the corner, and almost bumps into WINNIFRED too. She
glances between the two with a frown.

MARGOT
Is everything alright back here?

WINNIFRED
Yes, may we start the assignment now?

LAURENCE
Everything’s fine. I was just having a nice
conversation with…

WINNIFED
Winnifred Goody.

MARGOT
Right, well…Let’s get started.

WINNIFRED scurries off. LAURENCE goes to follow her, but MARGOT puts a
hand on his chest to stop him.

LAURENCE
Did you have to come over here?

MARGOT
Yes. I was looking for Winnifred. Why? Do you
have something to hide over here?

LAURENCE
No.

He shuffles his feet nervously.

MARGOT
No?

LAURENCE
No.

MARGOT doesn’t believe him.

MARGOT
Alrighty then.

PINEWOOD ACADEMY POOL, MALE CHANGING ROOMS

Margot pads into the changing room from the pool, spying Edison, still
slightly damp, getting dressed in a hurry. She heads over.

EDISON
(quietly upset)

I don’t have a drug problem. You believe me,

right?

MARGOT
(sympathetic)

Of course. They're just trying to get to you. Get

back at you.

They both sit.

EDISON
What for? It’s not like I’m the one going round
pulling facts out of their arse or hitting people.

MARGOT
You can still get under people's skin, though,
you know?

EDISON
Well yeah, but I’m not saying stuff to
deliberately get under their skin. I mean, not really. I’m just
having fun.

MARGOT
Sometimes it's not fun, though. For other people.
Like, my brother? Is really self-conscious at some of the
things you tease him about. And that makes him feel bad, you
know?

EDISON
(scoffing)

That’s not my problem. They shouldn’t be so

sensitive. Laurence should take it as a compliment more than
anything. He should be flattered. It’s not a bad thing.

MARGOT
Surely I could say that you shouldn't be so
sensitive about someone saying you're an addict. Hm? If it's
not true.

EDISON
I-
10.

Someone walks into the changing rooms, shutting a cubicle door. It ruins
the moment, and Edison’s train of thought.

MARGOT
All I’m saying is maybe try to think a little,
before you say some things?

EDISON
Sure thing, boss.

MARGOT
I'm only saying it for yo-

The lights in the changing room begin to flicker.

EDISON
Guess this place is more worn down than it
looks...

MARGOT
(uneasy)

Yeah…

EDISON
What? You’re not scared of the dark are you?
Because if they go out, I’ll hold your hand, Mags.

MARGOT
(badly masking her brimming fear)

Terrified. You never know what could happen in

the dark.

EDISON
Well, aren’t you cheery.
The shower turns on. It makes EDISON jump. Once he’s recovered…

EDISON
Showers are throwing a tantrum, no big deal.

MARGOT
Better turn it off. Save the planet, and all
that.
MARGOT gets up, and takes this moment to calm herself down. Why is this
so scary?

EDISON
Uh, yeah. Right.
11.

The lights begin to flicker again. The light above EDISON, however,
doesn’t, and instead begins to get brighter and brighter. We know what
this means, but EDISON doesn’t.

EDISON
Uh, Margot? I think this light is…

His shadow starts to stretch out in front of him, growing.

EDISON (CONT’D)
…Broken.

MARGOT
It's probably a faulty wire somewhere.

The shadow continues to grow. As do EDISON’s nerves.

EDISON
Uh, yeah, maybe.

The SHADOW, to EDISON’s utter horror, slowly begins to peel itself off
of the wall, and assumes some kind of physical form. All of a sudden, it
lunges, and grabs onto EDISON’s ankle.

EDISON
Jesus!

He starts to flick his ankle around in a vain attempt to get

the SHADOW creature off of him. The hand around his ankle
almost looks real, if not for the shadowy fingers.

MARGOT
What is it? What’s wrong?

EDISON
(to the SHADOW)

Fuck off!

She arrives back, just in time to see EDISON’s ankle yanked, and watch
his body smack painfully against the tiled floor. He is dragged across
the tiles toward a locker. HE SCREAMS.

MARGOT
Eddie!
MARGOT tries to grab him, but narrowly misses.

PINEWOOD ACADEMY GROUNDS, LATE AFTERNOON

We find LAURENCE and MARGOT mid-conversation, in a hushed whisper. It’s

not clear who they’re talking about.

LAURENCE
I don't believe it. It sounds like a joke.

MARGOT
Why would she joke about something like that? She
gave me this.

MARGOT produces some SAGE from a pocket.

LAURENCE
A leaf?

MARGOT
Sage. I’m not lying.

LAURENCE
I just don't see it. She's weird but that's just
a bit much.

MARGOT
Why would she tell me if she didn’t do it?

ELIJAH
Why would you wait two days to tell anyone?
MARGOT and LAURENCE jump, having not seen ELIJAH lurking in the shadows.

LAURENCE
Do you need something, Wright?

ELIJAH
I saw you both whispering to yourselves over here,
and, well, you know what they say. Curiosity killed the
cat.

MARGOT
But satisfaction brought it back.

ELIJAH
Either way…Spill.

MARGOT
I don’t think I should tell you.
13.

ELIJAH
I could just ask her myself…

MARGOT
You dare…

She steps toward ELIJAH.

ELIJAH
Bold of you to step up to me, Margot. What are
you going to do?

MARGOT doesn’t have an answer.

ELIJAH (CONT’D)
Now, why don’t we let this little interaction
stay between us, and you tell me what’s going on.
Considering it involves everyone’s safety.

MARGOT
You clearly already know everything. Why do you
want me to tell you?

ELIJAH
Because you kept this little secret for two days
before telling anyone. Heck, it sounded like you didn't
want to tell anyone in the first place.

MARGOT
Because it wasn’t anyone’s secret to know.

ELIJAH
A secret that could have cost anyone attending
this place their lives? Real smart.

MARGOT
She won’t hurt anyone.

ELIJAH
Not going to hurt anyone? Are you kidding?

MARGOT
She's been here for years, and she's not hurt
anyone. She's not dangerous.

ELIJAH
How would you know? the smallest thing
could set her off again. She’s a danger to everyone.

MARGOT
No she’s not.
14.

ELIJAH
Are you serious? You know what people say about
her.

He steps up to her threateningly.

ELIJAH (CONT’D)
You really should have told someone. I
expected more from you, Margot. You never know who’s
dangerous, and who’s harmless.

For a moment it’s unclear what’s about to happen. LAURENCE is visibly

nervous. Then, eventually…

MARGOT
You ought to stop sticking your nose where it
doesn’t belong.

After another short moment of tension, ELIJAH concedes.

ELIJAH
You’re putting everyone at risk.

LAURENCE
Alright, that’s enough.

ELIJAH backs off from MARGOT, and focuses his attention on LAURENCE.

ELIJAH
I'm just pissed off with all the suspicious shit
going on around here. Not getting any proper answers. I thought
you’d be in agreement with me.

For once in his life, LAURENCE doesn’t bite back.

ELIJAH
Fine.

He just about retains his dignity, straightening up and skulking off.

EXTRACT FROM EPISODE 6

PINEWOOD ACADEMY, LOCATION TBD

MARGOT is sat anxious. JULIET hovers by the window nervously, with

ELIJAH beside her, unphased.

EDISON
Margot!

MARGOT
Come in, it’s open.

EDISON enters, alone.

MARGOT (CONT’D)
Where's Laurence? And the others?

EDISON
No idea.

EDISON plonks himself down next to MARGOT.

JULIET
Laurence is coming. I just saw him out of the
window.

EDISON
So what are we doing?

MARGOT
We need to at least wait for Laurence, then I'll
explain.

EDISON
Oh, goodie. Then he can come in and boss us
around.

There’s a knock at the door. REUBEN enters a few moments later.

REUBEN
Everyone okay?

EDISON
Oh thank god, the reasonable one is here.
LAURENCE follows in after REUBEN

EDISON
And so is the grouchy one.
16.

LAURENCE
Want to explain all of this nonsense, Margot?

MARGOT
Shut the door, Laurence.

LAURENCE shuts the door a little too harshly.

ELIJAH
Looks like we're all here...How about you tell us
what we’re all doing here, Margot?

The gang all settle in.

MARGOT
So Edison kind of already knows this, but, um-
Winni is working with the umbra.

ELIJAH is suddenly paying attention. EDISON is uncharacteristically

serious.

REUBEN
What do you mean ‘Winni is working with the
umbra’?

MARGOT
(rambling)

I was eating lunch by the chapel, and I overheard

Winni talking to Edison, and she was talking about some kind of
deal, and how they want to kill Laurence, and that it was going
to kill Edison, and that she's going to help them get to us to
feed on us.

REUBEN
Woah, slow down.

JULIET
I’m not even sure what to say to that.

LAURENCE
Winnifred is not working with them. Maybe if you
all took the time to just have a normal conversation with her
she'd be more open about the fact she's been trying to find a
way to stop all of this and get rid of them all.

EDISON
Get off your high horse, Laurence. She said she
was working with them. That’s two witnesses. It’s true.
17.

MARGOT
She said that she's giving them us in exchange
for information. I'm sure she is trying to stop them, but she's
putting us all in danger.

JULIET
What kind of information?

MARGOT
I don’t know.

EDISON
She didn’t tell me.

LAURENCE
Is it true? Is it really? Because I will go up to
her room right now and ask her myself. I don't know if you
noticed Edison but you've not been the most reliable source of
information.

ELIJAH
You think she's just going to tell you that she's
interested in trying to kill all of us?

MARGOT
Laurence, I heard the conversation. I heard Winni
say so herself.

LAURENCE
I’m not taking a word he says as fact. He
wouldn’t know what the truth was if it-

REUBEN
Alright, everyone calm down. Now.

LAURENCE
This is all ridiculous. You're all ridiculous. To
accuse Winnifred of such a vile thing.

MARGOT
Why would I lie to you?

REUBEN
Look. We need to have a serious discussion about
this.

JULIET
I don't think we're going to get anywhere unless
everyone here in this room understands the full scope of what
it is we're dealing with.
18.

LAURENCE
(To REUBEN)

Why do you care about this? You're never around

when any of this shit goes down. You know who is? Winnifred.

REUBEN
Well, I’m here now, and we’re going to sort this
out. Sit down.

LAURENCE
I'm not going to stand idly by and let you all
accuse Winnifred when she's not even here to defend herself.

EDISON
The guilty don’t need defending.

ELIJAH
Laurence just doesn't want to believe that his
girlfriend could want to do this. Isn't it a little suspicious
that that girl is always there whenever anything goes down?

LAURENCE
Shut up. Margot has also been there every time
something's gone down. She went missing when this all started.

ELIJAH
Maybe she’s in on it too.

EDISON
Don’t talk about her like that.

JULIET
Let's all just collect ourselves. Breathe! And
actually discuss this.

LAURENCE
You're all crazy if you think I'm going to sit
here and listen to you go on this hate parade for someone who's
actually been helpful. How can any of you trust her?

He points to MARGOT.

REUBEN
That’s enough.

MARGOT
Me? When have I ever lied to you?

LAURENCE
You lied about seeing Edison.
19.

EDISON
Jesus Christ.

REUBEN
Listen up! I don't care what you think Winnifred
did or didn't do. Two people in this room are telling you that
she is trying to get people killed. Get over yourself. You’re
not the only person in this room who has ever been lied to.

LAURENCE starts towards EDISON. REUBEN steps between them.

REUBEN
Sit down.

The two of them square off for a moment, and neither of them move.
Eventually, LAURENCE concedes and goes to sulk against a wall.

REUBEN (CONT’D)
Now, everyone; we're going to have a calm,
rational discussion about this. Got it?

There is a reluctant, mumbled agreement all round.

MARGOT
Laurence can leave if he wants. We don't need
him.

LAURENCE immediately gets up and leaves. The room falls in silence.

EDISON
Asshole.

JULIET
Eddie. Will you please be quiet for once?

ELIJAH
Well, this is a waste of time.

ELIJAH quickly, perhaps too quickly, leaves the room.

The remaining gang all sit in silence again.

JULIET
Was there anything else to say, Margot?

MARGOT doesn’t answer. JULIET takes this as a no, and quietly leaves.

MARGOT
(eventually)

I’m sorry.
20.

REUBEN
You don’t need to be sorry, Margot.

MARGOT
I think I did more harm than good.

EDISON
Fine. If we’re not going to fix this, I’m out.

MARGOT
Please don’t leave.

He wants to leave, but when she looks at him like that…

EDISON
I’ve got stuff to do, alright? I’m not going to
sit here and wait to get bumped off by Winnifred Goody.

MARGOT
Are you kidding? This is your fault!

This changes things.

EDISON
Listen, princess. You’ve got no one to blame but
yourself. All you are is just some selfish brat who throws a
fit every time her brother doesn’t want anything to do with
her. So I’d check where you’re throwing the blame here, Margot
because, you’re way out of line.

REUBEN
Alright, I think that's enough for one night.
Time for you to go, Eddie.

EDISON
Gladly. Don’t wait up for me.

EDISON leaves. REUBEN shuts the door behind him.

There is a moment of silence between the two left in the room.

REUBEN
I hate this school.

He slumps to the floor next to MARGOT, who has started to cry.

REUBEN (CONT’D)
Sorry.

MARGOT
It’s okay.
21.

Silence. REUBEN lights a cigarette.

MARGOT (CONT’D)
I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.

REUBEN
I know you didn’t. And I believe you.

MARGOT
You seem to be the only one.

REUBEN
Well, if the others don’t believe you, screw
them. We can deal with them ourselves.

MARGOT
What? How?

REUBEN
I don’t know. But we’ll figure it out. We’re
smart enough.

MARGOT
I think you're overestimating me.

REUBEN
I think you’re doing the opposite. But I have to
agree with Eddie on one point. You're always looking to Laurence
for approval. You need to realize how smart you are. You don't
need to listen to him or do whatever he tells you.

MARGOT
But if I don't, then he'll hate me. He won't want
anything to do with me.

REUBEN
So what? This isn't healthy for you. He brushes
you off all the time, speaks to you like shit. I mean, look at
how he just spoke to you. You can live your life without him.
You've got other people to help you.

MARGOT
Like who?

REUBEN
Well, me, for starters.
22.

The two sit in silence for another moment. MARGOT looks as if she wants
to say something.

What?

MARGOT
I just- You’re so understanding. You get people. No
one else here is like that.

REUBEN
I try to be understanding with everyone. Sometimes
it doesn't happen.

MARGOT
That's still better than most people. Most people
don't even try to understand. It's a good trait to have.

REUBEN
Probably one of the only ones I’ve got.

MARGOT
That’s not true. You have lots.

REUBEN
Well, they’re taking their time to appear.

MARGOT
(counting on her fingers)

You’re considerate. And you’re understanding,

like I said. That’s two.

REUBEN
(copying her counting)

Quick to anger.

MARGOT
Passionate.

REUBEN
Argumentative.

MARGOT
Loyal.

REUBEN
Apathetic.
23.

MARGOT briefly falters. An idea comes to her head, something much more
adoring than she’d feel comfortable expressing, which she ignores.

MARGOT
Intelligent. See, that’s five.

She wiggles her five fingers.

REUBEN
Alright, fine, you win. I suppose I do have
something going for me.

MARGOT
Everyone does.

REUBEN
Which is exactly the point I’ve been trying to
make. You have a lot more going for you than you think. You don't
Laurence’s approval.

Margot smiles.

REUBEN
I think that's the first time I've seen you smile
properly.

MARGOT
I’ve not had a lot to smile about.

REUBEN
Well, I’m glad I’ve made you smile tonight.
24.

EXTRACT FROM EPISODE 7

PINEWOOD ACADEMY, LIBRARY, AFTERNOON

WINNIFRED is in the library. She is journalling and pressing flowers.

Between her lips rests a pencil. She seems tired, maybe even ill.

Nervously, EDISON approaches her.

EDISON
Didn’t you just do an exam, like, half an hour
ago? What are you doing?

WINNIFRED
I’m pressing flowers.

Obviously trying (and sort of failing) to make conversation, EDISON

clears his throat nervously and continues.

EDISON
I’d never have the patience to do that.

Awkward pause.

EDISON (CONT’D)
Actually, I uh…I found something. It’s old. It
doesn’t really make any sense to me...But I recognised
something.

He pulls a crumbled piece of paper out of his pocket and sits down
beside WINNI, showing her the sigil drawn on it.

EDISON
It’s like the one on your leg, I’ve seen it.

WINNIFRED doesn’t look like she wants to open up.

EDISON (CONT’D)
I’m gonna listen this time.

This seems to put her worries slightly more at ease. She takes the note
and reads through it. A few painful silent seconds pass before she
finishes.

WINNIFRED
Other people have dealt with these things before.

EDISON
I think you’re stupid. If what the paper
says...about making deals with those things, and if you
actually did that; then you’re crazier than I thought. And I’ve
done a lot of stupid things, so I know stupid when I see it.
25.

Despite his slightly mocking words, they are laced with worry.

EDISON (CONT’D)
Will they kill you?

WINNIFRED
No. They can’t kill me without killing
themselves.

EDISON
Sounds like they’re as stupid as you then.

Another awkward pause. He watches her press flowers.

EDISON (CONT’D)
Sometimes, at night when the others aren’t back
yet, I see them; those things. I can’t even tell if what I’m
seeing is real or not. They’re just that freaky, huh?

WINNIFRED
It will be real, they wanted you to die. I really
am sorry about what happened Edison. They made me choose ...

EDISON
Noted. It’s fine. I mean, it’s not fine. It
messed me up...nearly dying. But I suppose it’s not entirely
your fault. It’s not like I’m important in the equation, you
were just choosing what you felt was right, I guess.

He can’t quite comprehend how someone could choose whose life gets
spared, and whose doesn’t. He doesn’t want to, and so he reaches out and
touches one of the flowers on the page.

EDISON (CONT’D)
Can’t you get out of it?

WINNIFRED doesn’t answer his question. She doesn’t want to, as if saying
it out loud will make the answer true.

EDISON notices her discomfort and searches his bag. Eventually, he pulls
out a WAGGON WHEEL. An olive branch.

EDISON
They don’t fix everything, but I think chocolate
makes everything a little bit better.

WINNIFRED is shocked, and it takes her a moment to accept the gift. She
silently unwraps the treat, and takes a bite.

WINNIFRED
Thank-you.
26.

Another awkward pause.

WINNIFRED (CONT’D)
The note ... Where did you find it? Maybe we can
figure out who wrote it?

EDISON
In a history book. I don’t think anybody has even
checked that book out since like, the 1900s. I barely got past
the front cover. Studying is boring, I have no idea how anyone
enjoys it.

He produces the book from his bag. He opens it and they look at the
catalogue card together. Edison points to a date, July 7th, 1910.

WINNIFRED
The letter was dated 1910. There was different
information but similar writing style and the same old paper.
And it was dated 1910 just like the date this book was last
used.

EDISON
What letter?

WINNIFRED
I found a note from 1910 about a group of kids,
they’d made some kind of society to investigate these demons.
Turns out they ran into the same things we did when we went
into the theatre.

EDISON
That makes sense. I wouldn’t dare set foot in the
old theatre; I feel like it’s just an unknown rule here. Dunno
why. But I suppose you do, and some of the others too.

WINNIFRED
I often go to the theatre, it’s actually a place
that I feel the safest.

She looks down at the note again.

WINNIFRED (CONT’D)
These kids were ahead of their time, believing in
ghosts...

EDISON
I feel like ghosts would be easier to deal with.
What are you gonna do next?

WINNIFRED
They’re still hungry. But another human shouldn’t
get to decide who dies and who doesn’t. I don’t know what to do
if I’m not doing what they say.
27.

EDISON
Who says that anybody has to die? You could
figure something out, you’re smart enough. Hell, I know you
freak me out, but you’re smart enough that I’d trust you with a
plan - If you ever made one. I mean, now that I listened to
you, you’re not so bad...I guess.

WINNIFRED is touched by this. Or, at least, she thinks she should be?

WINNIFRED
I wouldn’t know where to begin with plotting
against them. They’re always watching me, sometimes I feel
them. I thought I knew enough information on them to get rid of
them... Hell, the kids from 1910 probably know more than us.

EDISON is suddenly filled with determination. The idea of accepting

defeat is enough to spur him on to help her. Even if he’s scared, maybe
he can give her a little optimism.

EDISON
Then we should find it - look through every book
in this library until we find something more. There’s probably
tonnes of things they’ve written stashed around this school,
right? Maybe they’ll be an answer. If there’s stuff about
making deals, there has to be something about breaking them.

WINNIFRED
I suppose if there are two pieces of information
stashed away there are bound to be more... However I have never
known a deal with the devil to be broken.

EDISON
Then maybe you’re not as smart as I thought. You
can’t just give up without trying. I think we’ll find a way.

The use of ‘we’ catches them both off guard.

WINNIFRED
Okay fine, where shall we look first Sherlock.

EDISON
No idea who that is. But I say we start at the
history section? There might be more there?

WINNIFRED
I went through ever single one of those during
the holidays, I didn’t come across anything other than, well,
history.

EDISON
Yet I’m the lucky one that came across that note
in a one off attempt at getting my life together? Which, by the
way, I will never repeat. Let’s go.

EXTRACT FROM EPISODE 8

PINEWOOD ACADEMY, MARGOT’S DORM ROOM, EVENING

JULIET and REUBEN knock on MARGOT’s door, and head inside.

JULIET
Hey. I brought the journal.

REUBEN
We thought we could go through it again.

MARGOT
Sure. You’ll have to be quiet, though.

EDISON is still asleep.

REUBEN
Oh. Got it.

They all huddle together around the journal.

JULIET
I haven't read much more. But I've been thinking
about the Society of Bones, did James tell you anything about
them?

MARGOT
Nothing. What have you been thinking?

JULIET
Well, there's not a lot of mentions of them. At
least not in the first pages. But what it seems is they were a
group of students, like us, who banded together to stop the
Umbra. It doesn’t look like they succeeded.

REUBEN
I gathered that much.

MARGOT
James mentions his brother, Sebastian, in the
letter, and a girl called Amelia.

MARGOT hunts through the papers for the letter.

REUBEN
I saw those names in the journal. There’s no
telling whose journal it is, though.

JULIET
Can I see it?
29.

REUBEN
Sure.

He slides her the journal. Comparing the handwriting to the letter

MARGOT digs out, she finds that they are different.

JULIET
It's not James', because the writer mentions
James here.

She gestures to the page she has open.

JULIET (CONT’D)
They mention a girl called Alice on this page, I
haven't seen her name mentioned anywhere before.

REUBEN
Maybe we could ask James about her.

JULIET
Maybe.

MARGOT
They liked her. Whoever wrote the journal.

REUBEN
Yeah, I noticed that. Do you think she felt the
same?

MARGOT
It’s hard to tell…

They come to a page with lots of scribbles, drawings, and diagrams on

it.

REUBEN
What does that say?

JULIET
I think it's what was in the letter.

She points out different annotations.

JULIET (CONT’D)
This is talking about how destroying the head
stops it from moving. Like I ended up finding out. This is the
point about heat...

REUBEN
Destroying the head? What, like in that movie..?
Oh, what was it… Night of the Living Dead?
30.

MARGOT
I don’t know. I was never allowed to watch that
movie.

JULIET
It's about the dead coming back to life. The only
way people can kill them is destroying the head.. or the brain
more precisely.

MARGOT
Like the Umbra.

REUBEN
(affirming)

Like the Umbra.

JULIET
This could be the brother’s journal.

REUBEN
The brother?

MARGOT
Sebastian. James’ brother.

JULIET
It mentions James, so it can't be him, and
whoever writing it seems to like this girl so...it checks
out...

REUBEN
Yeah, that's a good point. It doesn't mention
Sebastian by name at all.
JULIET suddenly has a realisation.

JULIET
He caught a fever.

MARGOT
Yes, and?

JULIET
What don’t the Umbra like?
REUBEN suddenly twigs on to what she’s trying to say.

REUBEN
Heat.
