Lesson Plan

Date: November 2020 (Lesson 11)

Subject: Mathematics
Grade: 8
Topic: Number Theory - Approximation and Estimation
Sub – Topic: Adding and Subtracting in Standard Form

Specific Objectives
Students should be able to:
1. Correctly add and subtract numbers in standard form

To add numbers in standard form both numbers need to be written in the same power of
ten.

Here are some examples:

Question 1: Add 2.1 × 102 𝑎𝑎𝑎 3.5 × 102

Question 2: Subtract 3.7 × 104 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 6.9 × 104

1
Question 3: Add 8.9 × 103 𝑎𝑎𝑎 3.5 × 103

Sometimes the numbers given may not have the same power of 10 as shown in the examples
above. In that case, here’s what you should do.

2
Note: Convert the number with the smaller power of 10 to the larger power of 10.

Activity: Evaluate each of the following:

1. 7.8 × 106 + 2.5 × 106
2. 5.4 × 10−3 − 3.9 × 10−3
3. 8.8 × 104 − 6.5 × 103
4. 2.6 × 106 + 2.6 × 104
5. 7.8 × 10−6 + 5.8 × 10−5
