GIVING A BED BATH

 Bathing is an essential component of nursing care and a critical time to assess the client.

Types of Bath:
1. Therapeutic
2. Cleaning - routine client care; for personal hygiene

Types of Cleaning Bath:


1. Shower
2. Tub
3. Self-help or assisted bath
4. Complete bed bath
5. Partial bath

Purpose:
 Provide hygienic care to a dependent client confined to bed

Expected Outcome:
1. Client will be cleaned without damage to their skin
2. Client’s privacy will be maintained throughout the procedure
3. Client will participate in their own hygiene as much as possible
4. Client will not feel discomfort
5. The patient will vocalize feeling clean and fresh.

GIVING A BED BATH

 Place soiled linen in laundry bag.
 Take care to prevent linen from coming in
contact with your clothing.

 If patient has an IV line and is not wearing a

gown with snap sleeves, remove gown from


other arm first.

warm water (43-46 Degree Celsius).
 Change as necessary throughout the bath.

 Fold the washcloth like a mitt on your hand
so that there are no loose ends.
20. With no cleanser on the washcloth, wipe one eye 5 4 3 2 1
from the inner part of the eye, near the nose, to
the outer part.
 Rinse or turn the cloth before washing the
other eye.

 Ask the client about preferences for using
soap on the face.
 Use a separate corner of the wash cloth for
each eye, wiping from inner to outer
canthus.
 Rinse and pat dry

 Ask male clients if they want to be shaved.
Assist if needed.
23. Expose patient’s far arm and place towel 5 4 3 2 1
lengthwise under it.
 Using firm strokes, wash hand, arm, and
axilla, lifting the arm as necessary to
access axillary region.
 Rinse, if necessary, and dry.

patient’s hand and put basin on it. Soak the
patient’s hand in basin.
 Wash, rinse if necessary, and dry hand.

 An option for the shorter nurse or one
susceptible to back strain might be to bathe
one side of the patient.
 Move to the other side of the bed to
complete the bath.

 Lower bath blanket to patient’s umbilical
area. Wash, rinse, if necessary, and dry
chest.
 Keep chest covered with towel between the

wash and rinse.


 Pay special attention to the folds of skin
under the breasts.
27. Lower bath blanket to the perineal area. Place a 5 4 3 2 1

Carefully inspect and clean umbilical area and any
abdominal folds or creases.

 Place towel under far leg
 Using firm strokes, wash, rinse, if
necessary, and dry leg from ankle to knee
and knee to groin.
30. Wash, rinse if necessary, and dry the foot. Pay 5 4 3 2 1
particular attention to the areas between toes
31. Repeat actions 29-30 for the leg nearer you. 5 4 3 2 1
 An option for the shorter nurse or one
susceptible to back strain might be to bathe
one side of the patient.
 Move to the other side of the bed to
complete the bath.

Change water and washcloth at this point or
earlier, if necessary.
33. Assist patient to prone or side-lying position. 5 4 3 2 1
 Put on gloves, if not applied earlier.
 Position bath blanket and towel to expose
only the back and buttocks.

buttocks area.
 Pay particular attention to cleansing
between gluteal folds, and observe for any
redness or skin breakdown in the sacral
area.
35. If not contraindicated, give patient a backrub 5 4 3 2 1

Discard washcloth and towel. Remove gloves and
put on clean gloves.
37. Clean perineal area or set patient up so that he or 5 4 3 2 1
she can complete perineal self-care. If the patient
is unable, lower the side rail and complete
perineal care

the use of other personal toiletries, such as
deodorant or cosmetics.
