Exercise 8. Read the pasage and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D for each question.
The generation gap refers to the difference in attitudes or behavior between a younger generation and
the older one. In my opinion, different attitudes towards life, different views about certain problems,
and a lack of communication can cause a generation gap in most societies.
The first factor is that parents and children generally see things from different perspectives. Choosing a
career is a good example for this. Many parents try to impose certain careers they favor on their
children, based on their own perceptions. However, young people don’t always understand their
parents’ points of views. Instead, they prefer to be free to make their own decisions on their future
career.
Another factor lies in differences in musical tastes, fashion, and political views between young people
and their parents. For example, having a pierced nose might be viewed as fashionable by some teens,
but for many parents, it is considered to be an act of rebellion against social norms. Some parents may
also find their children’s behavior unacceptable and disrespectful to traditional values.
The major factor causing the generation gap is lack of communication between parents and their
children. Parents tend to be dominant and not to trust their children to deal with crises. Also, they keep
talking too much about certain problems. That is the reason why young people seldom reveal their
feelings to their parents. When facing problems, young people prefer to seek help from their
classmates or friends.
The above mentioned factors could lead to a generation gap. In order to bridge the gap between the old
generation and the younger one, mutual understanding is the vital key. The wisest solution would be
for parents and their children to treat each other as friends.
27. How many causes of the generation gap are mentioned?
A. 2 B. 3 C. 4
28. How do young people usually react when their parents impose career choices on them?
A. They want to make their own decisions.
B. They follow their parents’ advice.
C. They try to understand their parents’ goodwill.
29. What do parents often think about nose piercing?
A. They think that it is acceptable.
B. They think that it is fashionable.
C. They think that it is against social norms.

30. What do young people often do when they face problems?

A. They share the problems with their parents.
B. They ask their classmates or friends for help.
C. They ask their parents for help.
31. What would be the best way to narrow the generation gap?
A. Parents and children should try to be friends and understand each other.
B. Parents should be tolerant and let children do what they want.
C. Children should follow their parents’ advice.

VII. Read the passage about the effects of teenage relationships, and then answer the questions.
Different relationships affect teenagers in various ways. Friends impact teenagers almost the same
amount as their parents. Teenagers go to their friends for help or to ask questions that they could not
ask their parents about. Most of the time their friends give them good advice. In most cases they tell
their friends how to dress and act when being around certain people.
Love relationships just make it even harder for a teenager to get a good education. Some start to fail in
school because they are hanging out with their boyfriend or girlfriend instead of doing their work.
Parents have a big influence on teenagers because their children look up to them and the majority of
them grow up to act and do things just like their parents did with them. Children who have experienced
a family break-up may have lower achievements than children brought up in an intact family.
As previously stated, teenagers are affected by many relationships which involve their friends, family,
and their love relationships. The relationships affect them so much that most teenagers change their
ideas about how they should live their lives in a different way and to change their future goals. They
should be influenced to help themselves or to help others.

before. She realized right away that he had been truanting.
Peter's behaviour was causing conflict in the house and Mr. and Mrs. Nelson were both concerned.
They had different views of how they should deal with Peter's behaviour and this led to rows that upset
the whole family. They decided to prevent Peter from going out with his friends, but this just made
him more stubborn and he would continue to miss school and stay outside his curfew.
Over the coming weeks, family life became more and mire difficult. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson felt that they
could no longer do this on their own and asked the school to help. The school arranged for Peter to talk
to someone he trusted, and they made an agreement for him to start gradually attending school again.
He was also given some time to catch up with the work he had missed.
As he started to talk it through, Peter realized that he had been unhappy at school for a while. He

persuaded him to skip school. As he missed more and more school, it became harder to go back.
Peter was encouraged to tell his parents how much he missed his friend and that he wanted to spend
time with his dad playing football or fishing. Mr. Nelson thought he had grown out of that a long time
ago but was pleased to spend time with Peter again.
Mr. and Mrs. Nelson tried to notice every day when Peter achieved his goal of attending school, being
on time and remembering to do his homework. It took a little longer for Peter's friendships to return to
normal and Peter has had to learn to prove himself trustworthy to his parents, but gradually Mr. and
Mrs. Nelson are learning to trust Peter again.

The Ability to Get from One Place to Another
One important life skill that teenagers need to learn in order to become independent, and to generally
be able to operate without their parents is transportation, or "getting from Point A to Point B". While it
sounds simple, many teens do not have a good grasp of this simple skill. There is a bus to get to school
and often, the family rely upon for transportation to go anywhere else.

Thủy Sơn high school 24 Schoolyear: 2018 - 2019

Extra exercises 11
Always leaving this important life skill to parents can lead a child to develop the bad habit of never
taking the responsibility of being where they need to be and blaming others for being late or not
showing up. That will hinder your teen's daily living and success.
Young adults have goals, dreams and responsibilities that will require them to know all they can about
different modes of transportation.
Teens need to know "how to get there from here". Therefore, parents need to give the responsibility of
transporting themselves from one place to another to their teens as often as possible. When parents do
this, teens learn valuable transportation lessons.
Transportation lessons and experiences are taught in high school and some can be taught by getting
your teens involved with travel clubs or various youth events.
