Assignment # 4

Problem # 1

Given the following data for a rectangular beam: width b = 320 mm, effective depth d = 520 mm, f’c = 27 MPa,
fy = 345 MPa. Dead load moment Md = 180 kN-m, Live load moment Ml = 167 kN-m. Determine the required
tension steel area.

Problem # 2

A reinforced concrete beam has a width of 300 mm and effective depth of 460 mm. The beam is reinforced with
2 – 28 mm compression bars placed 70 mm from extreme concrete. Concrete strength f’c = 35 MPa and steel
strength fy = 345 MPa.

a) What is the balanced steel area considering the contribution of the compression steel?
b) What is the maximum tension steel area allowed by the code?

Problem # 3

A rectangular beam has a width of 260 mm, and an overall depth of 470 mm. Concrete cover is 60 mm from the
centroid of bars. Concrete compressive strength f’c = 21 MPa. Steel yield strengths are 415 MPa for longitudinal
bars and 275 MPa for hoops.

Determine the shear strength provided by concrete using the simplified calculation.
a) If the beam is subjected to shear and flexure only, and
b) If the beam is subjected to axial compressive force of 80 kN.

Problem # 4

Design a square tied column that can support an axial dead load of 575 kN and an axial live load of 770 kN.
Assume fc' = 27.6 MPa and fy = 414 MPa. Use 28 mm main bars and 10 mm ties.

Problem # 5

A round spiral column having a diameter of 450 mm reinforced with 6 – 25 mm bars having fy = 345 MPa. If the
service axial dead load is 900 kN, determine the safe axial live load of the column. Use fc' = 34 MPa.

Problem # 6

Design a square tied column to carry the following loads:

Axial loads: Shear parallel to one side:

Dead Load = 800 kN Dead Load = 80 kN
Live Load = 650 kN Live Load = 90 kN

Concrete strength fc' = 21 MPa. Use 25 mm diameter longitudinal bars (fy = 415 MPa) and 10 mm diameter ties
(fyh = 275 MPa). Clear protective covering is 30 mm. Use 2.5% steel ratio.
